Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Hard Reset Stuck At Grub

Sep 17, 2010

I currently have a problem where when xubuntu is restarted using the power button, it will prompt the user with grub asking which selection to boot (xubuntu recovery or xubuntu) this feature itself is fine, but for some reason there is no timer, which means that unless you hit enter, it will always be stuck on the GRUB selection screen. I am wondering if there is any way to change this, is there anyway to enter a timer into the system so no matter what, after x seconds it will boot xubuntu?

Debian :: PACKAGE MANAGER Crash - Stuck - Dead - How To Reset Or Clear Repositories

May 15, 2011

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.

What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.

The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.

I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)

Ubuntu :: Disk Corruption After Hard Reset?

Feb 12, 2011

I'm facing a big problem with a corrupted disk on my wife's computer after she hard resetted the box after it froze up solid.Upon restarting it dropped into Busybox reporting something like

Quote:No init found. Try passing init= boot arg BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2.2ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash) (initramfs) ...This is VERY similar to a problem I had just a few weeks back with my own computer - see this thread for details of that. From that problem I learnt a lot, so I thought this would be quite straight forward, but I've ran into problems. The first thing I did was get a live disk, I chose Ubuntu Rescue Remix. It's a command line interface, which I am ok with, but I can't copy/paste the outputs here....so I am currently downloading System Rescue CD.sda1 is the root partition, it is corrupted. I used dd to make a back up of that by mounting sda7, and dding the whole partition image into /mnt/sda7/sda1.img .This seemed to complete properly, but, when I ran e2fsck on that img file, it wouldn't complete, throwing up a lot of errors.

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt/sda7temp$ sudo e2fsck sda1.img e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Error reading block 2129920 (Invalid argument). Ignore error<y>? yes
Force rewrite<y>? yes[code]....[code]....

When I download and boot into System Rescue CD, I'll be able to run some more tests, in the mean time,I really want to save this disk otherwise my wife will be back on Windows permanently.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Frequently Freezes Up And Has To Be Hard-reset

Under 9.10, my laptop frequently freezes up and has to be hard-reset. At first I thought it was a Firefox issue because it happens most often when I'm on the web, but the computer also crashed on me while doing things in Synaptic, so it must be something else. I have an HP Pavilion z5000 with an Ati Radeon 9600 Mobility, 1.25 GB of RAM and 120 GB hard drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Check For Hard Reset Damage?

Feb 26, 2010

I feel a little awkward in this Control Panel: first time user. I installed the latest version of Ubuntu yesterday. All went smooth until I got to installing printer drivers. The setup went online and my system froze...everything froze. I had to do a hard reset. The printer installation went smooth the second time. So far this is the only problem I've had. No details needed. What I was wondering is if there's any way to check if the hard reset did any damage.

Ubuntu Installation :: Xubuntu Cannot Format Hard Drive?

Aug 29, 2010

I have a PC with really low specs ( it's a back up computer) that's running puppy linux but I don't really like it. It's hard to navigate/get things you could easily do on Windows Xp done, it's menus are crowded and well it can't even shut off properly which is a shame. I've had it on for only a week.

Anyways, I've downnloaded the Xubuntu . Iso and burnt it at 1x speed. I pop it in and it does take a long time to go through the install. ( I'm not sure if it's because of the disc read speed or because of the memory and what not) I chose the option to delete everything and install Xubuntu. It works and then I get a couple of error message and then the last one says something like " Can not format sda1" or something like that.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Hard-reset After Using Rm -r As Root / Enable It?

Apr 6, 2010

First of all, i'll just say this myself. I'm a dumbass and tried to fix somethings that wasn't even a problem from the start and now my 9.10 installation is totally fubar. There, done, now let's move on.

Ok, so I tried to delete a folder after compiling two binaries to the wrong folder and used the
Code:
rm -r
command on what I thought was the folder /home/lars/bin. And to add to the dumbass-ering, I was root while doing this. The computer hangs and leaves me with no other options than doing a hard-reset via power-button.

After rebooting I can't even see the login screen, it just hangs at the Ubuntu symbol.

So I give the recovery mode option in my grub menu a try and it gives me a bunch of lines, all looking good until I get this and the boot just stops with a blinking underscore. code...

Should I just beat myself for a while and then reinstall the OS or what...?

The hardware involved is a Asus EEEpc 1000h.

ps. I'm new to Linux and have so-far managed to get around by following guides and tips, just a heads-up.

General :: Install Xubuntu 9.04 From Iso On Hard Drive

Apr 25, 2010

Having problems installing Xubuntu 9.04 to my Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know, but available...). Problem is that the CDROM is not working right and the BIOS doesn't support boot from USB so I can't do a complete live CD install via the CDROM or USB.What I'd like to do instead is install the ISO to the HD and run the install from that HD. Even with the CDROM problems I am able to load the Live CD installer from CDROM.

With that I think the best option will be to extract the ISO files to the HD (attach to another computer and extract to a FAT32 partition, then replace HD back in the latitude) then direct the liveCD bootloader to find the install files on the HD. Unfortunately I don't know the necessary commands to pass to the bootloader.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Boot System Forces Hard Reset

May 6, 2009

I'm new to Linux, tried Ubuntu, had slow boot problems, tried openSUSE 11.1, still have slow boot problems. The issue seems to be that the ata.0 device is slow to respond (ERROR= -16), the boot system forces a hard reset, then a soft reset, configures for UDMA 133, says the drive is ready, then does it again, three times, and then configures the drive for UDMA 100. It's a brand new Western Digital Caviar drive, and windowsXP likes it just fine. Once SUSE boots, everything seems to work just fine. I thought the problem might be with the drive jumpers, so I reset them from cable detect to master/single. No change in the problem.

Hardware :: C840 Laptop Chronically Overheating - Hard Reset

Feb 19, 2010

I have blown-out and dusted the interior of the case with a feather brush, reseated the heat-sink with lots of paste, reseated the heatsink with a thin layer of paste, I've disabled speedstep in the BIOS to get the thing to run @ 1.2ghz instead of its' rated 2.0ghz, I've cleaned and lubed the fans with 3-in-1 oil. Yet, It still overheats. It goes like this. I'm running Slack -current BTW.

Boot ok...
XFCE4 starts ok...
gkrellm starts ok...
THM shows anywhere from 28 to 44C at this point...
Konsole starts ok...THM kicks up to 48C
Seamonkey starts...THM kicks to 50C
Load a ..... video to give the processor a workout
Within 2 mins THM spikes to 74C and fans start.
THM drops to 50C within a minute or so and then fans stop...
just let the machine sit for a minute...and...lockup
Hard reset
THM shows 66C during boot sequence
this pattern repeats every time I try to use this machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck Installing 9.04 With Vista And Three Hard Drives

Jun 1, 2010

My smallest disc has the Vista loader and nothing else but I cannot select it for Dual Booting in the Ubuntu installation set up only for use as an entire disc which would delete the Vista Loader.

This is what I have:-
1st disc - no operating system much data
2nd Disc - empty except for Windows loader
3rd Disc - no operating system much stuff.

My original plan was to give Ubuntu all of the smaller second disc and I deleted everything ready to give it the entire hard disc. It was only when I went to install Ubuntu it I found the Vista loader lurking on disc 2 and the only option the install Ubuntu set up gave me for disc 2 was to use the entire disc (wiping out Vista loader) otherwise I could have installed Ubunbtu on another disc - which it reported as having no operating system.

If I put Ubuntu on disc 1 would I have a dual boot arrangement given that the installer saw no operating system on that disc ? Is there any (simple) way I can install Ubuntu on disc 2 and not loose the Vista loader? I am installing this version of Ubuntu as it was on the DVD that came with book "Beginning Ubntu Linux" It took me long time to Psych myself up to install it and when I did . . .

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive Now Stuck In Read-only Mode?

Jan 22, 2011

so here's my issue and what I think is causing it right now. I have a 1TB external usb hard drive that has worked perfectly, but recently I set it up a mount point for it in fstab so that I could create a SMB share on the drive so I could stream videos and pictures to my TV through my Wii using WiiMC. This now works perfectly, but now the hard drive has been set into read-only mode. When I use sudo to try to chmod the drive or the folders on it, it does nothing. When I right-click on the drive and check the permissions tab, it says the owner is root and all the options are greyed out.

I've read through several posts on similar topics to this, but none of them have been very helpful as they suggest using command line tools that I don't know how to use, so I'm hoping someone here can give me concise, step by step instructions of what to type in, or what settings to change in fstab to solve my little problem so I can start copying stuff back onto my drive. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and the filesystem on the external drive is FAT32. Here's some more info you might need:

sudo fdisk -l:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Ubuntu :: Reset BIOS Causing GRUB/boot Errors?

Aug 3, 2011

My problem, GRUB loader appears when it normally did not and Ubuntu fails to boot. My story, I installed ubuntu on a HP Touchsmart laptop a month ago because I was having troubles with Windows and... well I just wanted to install ubuntu. All goes well until a week ago when my sound was permanently muted through a hardware switch and ubuntu was not detecting it. I tried hitting the button on my laptop but nothing worked. Soo... I tried resetting my BIOS in hopes that it would fix it. I set the bios to its defaults and booted. This is where it got weird. the GRUB loader appeared when it normally did not and upon booting, a black screen with flashing cursor would show up and then... nothing. I changed the bios settings back to what they were and still nothing.

I have removed the silent boot from the GRUB boot line and can see whats going on... a little, the last thing it shows is "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done." annnd nothing else. When booting in recovery mode it stops after 30 or so seconds on...

Code:
ACPI: Power Button [PWRB]
input: Power Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXPWRBN:00/input/inp

and just ends on that line. the previous line shows closing the Lid as a button.

I have tried booting into a live USB (as the laptop has no cd drive) and everything works fine.

how the BIOS would be related to GRUB/booting..

General :: What To Put In The Grub File And 'x' Flages To Reset To Tie All Together

Mar 20, 2011

I'm lost before I can start using linux I have to install grub; grub is used to start linux, before you can install grub you must start linux ..... OK, I've borrowed a live-dvd from a friend (my burner is stuffed), its got Grub v 1.98; so thats what I'm stuck with (at least for now) Maybe I'm not stuck, but I'm finding the live cd too large and confusing, with filesystems I've never heard of and I cant work out what I can and cant do, given its a non-volatile media.

Anyway grub2 is good, as I think I can boot ISO images from an msdos or linux partition, without burning a cd; however, its bad, as to create grub.cfg I will need to build grub2 for whatever flavor of linux I finally choose (can you compile Grub for any kernel and use any library to do it?) What I am trying to do is a "frugal install" of a smaller distro, with boot, fat16, swap, & distro partitions, (the computer is p5mmx 200/64MB which runs 98SE and off97 fine, but seems to be minimal for linux). All the instructions to do this, tell you to copy the files across and modify your grub config (ie you already have it installed)

This is where I'm up to, I have created 2primary & 2 extended partitions. Put ext2 filesystems onto the first primary partition (for booting), and the 2nd extended (for linux) Run grub-install, so there is a directory grub at the root of the first partition. created a "linux" directory at the root of each of the ext2 partitions copied vmlinuz & initrd.gz to "linux" on the boot partition, copied the .sfs files to the other partition directory I don't know what to put in the grub file and what 'x' flages to reset to tie all this together.
