Ubuntu Multimedia :: Zune Won't Work - Can't Copy / Erase The Files?

Aug 22, 2010

There are many Zune threads - all stating that zune won't work with ubuntu - so I get that. But I am curious... Why can I mount the zune player and see the files on the zune - and then when I try to add to the zune or remove them get an error message. Ubuntu can see what is on the Zune, so why can't it copy/erase the files?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Get Dual Booting To Work

Jun 27, 2010

I can get ubuntu to work fine on its own (except for sound, a problem for another day), but I can't get dual booting to work.I'm using this page as a guide:URl...I started out with a clean OSX snow leopard install. I ran bootcamp and shrank my 320G hfs+ file system to 160G. I installed rEFIt, and rebooted twice (you don't see the menu after rebooting once). Then I booted from my 10.04 CD, and deleted the partition created by bootcamp using gparted. When I run the installer and tell it to use the largest continuous space, it makes the / file system in partition #5, and the swap partition in partition #5.

I figured that might cause problems with a MBR partition table, so I partitioned manually, and set up / in sda3 and swap in sda4.When I tried to configure the installation of the bootloader, I had a menu of possible places to install it. I picked /dev/sda3, but then the OK button was grayed out.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dual Booting Into XP 64 And Internet Won't Work On XP

Jul 25, 2011

I've re attempted going full on Linux using Ubuntu 11.04. I've done really well and have for the most part been able to make just about everything work. I was considering trying to dual boot into OS X on my PC if I could get Windows Office 10 to work in Ubuntu. I've had no luck getting office 10 or any of the suites to work in WINE no matter whos guides and how-to's I've read.

That lead me back into trying to dual boot into XP after a fresh format. The reason I need to get back into windows is that for my college courses Microsoft Word and Excel are required right now. So, this is getting me fairly frustrated as I'm not sure what to do or what the reason behind my other OS not seeing it's internet connection. I have samba and as well as my link to SWAT. I'm able to move files from Linux to XP with no problem, but have yet to configure SWAT as I'm not sure how to. My thinking is SWAT may have a reason to be why there's no connection.

Slackware :: Work Well Dual Booting With Windows?

Mar 2, 2011

I'm considering trying out Slackware just because I want to try something new. I've used Ubuntu for a couple of years and Debian for nearly a year so I do have some Linux experience. I do have some questions before I begin though. I've read that all configuration is done through text files. Does this include things like changing resolution and keybindings?

- I've also read that Slackware lacks a package manager. So does this mean that I'll have to download what I want from the internet and keep it up to date myself? Is there no repository? How are packages installed in Slackware? Is it a fairly simple process?

- Is installing multimedia codecs and Microsoft's True Type Core Fonts a fairly simple procedure? What about dependencies? I've heard that it has no dependency checking. So would I have to look up a list of dependencies for every package that I wish to install?

- How is LILO? Does it work well dual booting with Windows? In Ubuntu and Debian as soon as I install the OS, I can immediately access the internet from my wired router. Would I have to jump through any hoops in Slackware or can I expect similar results?

CentOS 5 :: Dual Booting With Windows 7 - Just Doesn't Work

Oct 2, 2010

I'm a visual effects artist and although many VFX post production houses use linux, I've always used windows because of the programs. At this point, I've migrated to different programs which are also available on linux. The only set of programs I won't have, would be the Adobe Suite. So, I decided to finally start using linux again. I used it back when I was a kid for a few years, but just to have it really. We mainly use macs at work, but I'm switching to linux now.

Since I mainly use Autodesk Maya, the first choice would've been RHEL. Which is why I'm here now, you can guess.

I've downloaded the .iso of CentOS 5.5 and checked it against the hashes and it came out fine. I burned it to a DVD and booted my main computer (I have 3 I plan on installing it onto) and tested the media, came back fine.

I have two HDs, one 1.5TB SATA and one 150GB SATA. The 1.5TB is the C: drive of windows, and I've shrunk it to allow 80GB for linux.

So that is sda. sda1 is the windows partition and I make sda2 ext3 out of the empty space by choosing the custom partition scheme. It installs fine.

However, booting up the computer boots straight to windows. No GRUB.

I've reinstalled many times now, changing the GRUB from sda to sda1 to sda2. Nothing.

[url]

I've adapted that guide to CentOS and tried that, but whenever I select the CentOS option during bootup, the computer instantly restarts itself.

I've tried reinstalling the GRUB via a Live CD like many googled sites say to, but I always get errors.

If I find the /boot/grub/stage1, it says it can't be found.

If I try to setup GRUB, it says /boot/grub/stage1 is unreadable

So, I download the Ubuntu CD and install that. I use the guide previously posted to do the same thing, by installing GRUB onto sda2 where Ubuntu is.

So I pick that option on startup and it brings me to Ubuntu's GRUB menu. It all works fine. CentOS doesn't though.

Ubuntu is using GRUB2, so it has a grub.cfg file. Inside the file near the end, it lists Ubuntu as (hd0,2) and windows as (hd0,1).

That shouldn't be right? What's (hd0,0) then?

The CentOS grub.conf file lists CentOS as (hd0,1) and windows as (hd0,0). That should be correct. But I change it anyway to (hd0,2) and (hd0,1) and it still doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu :: How Well Does Microsoft Office 2007 Work Under WINE

Jan 21, 2010

how well does Microsoft Office 2007 work under WINE? My mother is a school teacher for younger children, so she really only needs Microsoft Office 2007 and a browser. For the life of me, I've never met anyone that gets more viruses and problems with her computer. So I'm wondering if I can switch her over to Linux and use Microsoft Office 2007 in WINE. OpenOffice isn't a possibility, I'm already pushing it asking her to learn how to use Linux. (I know it isn't hard, I use it myself, but she will fight to the death about using Microsoft Office) So how's Office in WINE?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Converting Zune Wma To Mp3 ?

Jul 11, 2010

To Ubuntu after switching from Windows Vista. So far I really like it. I am trying to convert music in wma format that I purchased on Zune to mp3 format so that I can play it in Rhythm Box and use it on a SanDisk Fuze that I recently purchased. I installed Sound Convert. Sound Convert works fine when converting wma files that were created from ripping CD's. However, it freezes when trying to convert wma files that were purchased from Zune. Also if I try to double click on one of the wma files to play it with movie player, I get an error message saying that the file is encrypted and decryption is not supported.

I did find a converter on Windows that works. However, it was a trial version that only converts 90 secs. The full version costs $25. I do not feel that I should have to pay for music that I have already paid for. The music was purchased a la carte from Zune (not with the monthly pass). Does anyone know of a workaround to free my Zune music so I can access it on Ubuntu?
