I am new to Linux and was wondering how to make dual booting Windows and Ubuntu from 2 separate drives work. I have dual booted from the same drive but never different ones. If I install Ubuntu on the second drive how will I configure the system to let me choose on start up?
View 3 RepliesI have tried (a few times now lol) to get this setup. I am using Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit. I have Windows 7 installed on one hdd, another hdd has the System Reserved partition along with a data partition for files, the third hdd is the one where I want to install Ubuntu. I have found numerous tutorials on installing them both on the same drive, but not on separate ones. The couple I have found haven't really worked.
I think that Ubuntu is installed correctly but there is no option to boot into it. Windows 7 just happily loads itself. I have tried reinstalling and selecting 'sdc1' (the native ubuntu partition) as the location for the bootloader to be installed and then used Easy BCD to add that location to the windows bootloader which gives the option to load Ubuntu but when selected dies complaining that there is a missing file (I think it just can't find the Ubuntu bootloader).
As an aside when I get to the installation screen the Ubuntu installer keeps on telling me that there are no operating systems detected on the machine (Even though I'm pretty sure the drive it is talking about 'sda' is where Windows 7 is installed). Not sure if that matters just seemed a little wierd.
I have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.
I finally have decided to give ubuntu a shot.Windows is becoming too familiar, and it's been forever since I have used command line since DOS.I really need some humility, and I think that Linux will teach me some.I am going to give it a whirl on a "spare" machine, dual booting with Windows 7 64 on two separate hard drives. I'm burning the ubuntu live cd x86 right now. I am going to unplug my windows drive and start the installation.

Since they will be running as stand alone boot drives, how does one set it all up so that one can boot from one or the other? I don�t see how I can do it from the bios. How do I do it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am finding it hard to get 2 seperate hard drives to work each having different OS..... windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10. Making Ubuntu the master, it can recognise the drive but cannot boot from it. If XP is the master it does not recognise the Ubuntu drive at all.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.
I have Ubuntu 11.04 on 1TB HDD and Win 7 on another 1TB HDD. Right now I have to unplug a SATA cable to get to boot into one or the other. What is the best way to be able to pick. I don't care which OS I do it in or which is the primary, if there has to be one. I have an MSI mobo.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to properly install grub for the past 3 days and failing every time.I recently bought a new computer and would like to dual boot Windows 7 64 and Natty. On my previous machines, ubuntu installer has automatically detected windows. It does not do so on this machine.I have three hard drives: 2 ssd's and a single 3 tb drive for storage.
I would like one ssd for windows 7 and one for natty.Currently, I am able to boot into both OS's but only by altering the boot sequence of the drives from the bios. I am hesitant to install grub to the windows drive for fear I will lose the ability to boot into windows. I did this early in the discovery process and ended up having to reinstall windows.
I would like to have 1 hard drive operate with Ubuntu 10.04 and another with Windows 7 Pro, with a proper boot selection menu when I boot up my computer.

I've used Ubuntu for a couple of years and Debian for nearly a year so I do have some Linux experience. I do have some questions before I begin though. I've read that all configuration is done through text files. Does this include things like changing resolution and keybindings?
- I've also read that Slackware lacks a package manager. So does this mean that I'll have to download what I want from the internet and keep it up to date myself? Is there no repository? How are packages installed in Slackware? Is it a fairly simple process?
- Is installing multimedia codecs and Microsoft's True Type Core Fonts a fairly simple procedure? What about dependencies? I've heard that it has no dependency checking. So would I have to look up a list of dependencies for every package that I wish to install?
- How is LILO? Does it work well dual booting with Windows? In Ubuntu and Debian as soon as I install the OS, I can immediately access the internet from my wired router. Would I have to jump through any hoops in Slackware or can I expect similar results?
I'm a visual effects artist and although many VFX post production houses use linux, I've always used windows because of the programs. At this point, I've migrated to different programs which are also available on linux. The only set of programs I won't have, would be the Adobe Suite. So, I decided to finally start using linux again. I used it back when I was a kid for a few years, but just to have it really. We mainly use macs at work, but I'm switching to linux now.
Since I mainly use Autodesk Maya, the first choice would've been RHEL. Which is why I'm here now, you can guess.
I've downloaded the .iso of CentOS 5.5 and checked it against the hashes and it came out fine. I burned it to a DVD and booted my main computer (I have 3 I plan on installing it onto) and tested the media, came back fine.
I have two HDs, one 1.5TB SATA and one 150GB SATA. The 1.5TB is the C: drive of windows, and I've shrunk it to allow 80GB for linux.
So that is sda. sda1 is the windows partition and I make sda2 ext3 out of the empty space by choosing the custom partition scheme. It installs fine.
However, booting up the computer boots straight to windows. No GRUB.
I've reinstalled many times now, changing the GRUB from sda to sda1 to sda2. Nothing.

I've adapted that guide to CentOS and tried that, but whenever I select the CentOS option during bootup, the computer instantly restarts itself.
I've tried reinstalling the GRUB via a Live CD like many googled sites say to, but I always get errors.
If I find the /boot/grub/stage1, it says it can't be found.
If I try to setup GRUB, it says /boot/grub/stage1 is unreadable
So, I download the Ubuntu CD and install that. I use the guide previously posted to do the same thing, by installing GRUB onto sda2 where Ubuntu is.
So I pick that option on startup and it brings me to Ubuntu's GRUB menu. It all works fine. CentOS doesn't though.
Ubuntu is using GRUB2, so it has a grub.cfg file. Inside the file near the end, it lists Ubuntu as (hd0,2) and windows as (hd0,1).
That shouldn't be right? What's (hd0,0) then?
The CentOS grub.conf file lists CentOS as (hd0,1) and windows as (hd0,0). That should be correct. But I change it anyway to (hd0,2) and (hd0,1) and it still doesn't work.
After I complete a big project I'm working on I'm going to be wiping and re-doing my desktop machine, probably in the next day or three. I'm going to be setting up a dual-boot; my first in about three years. I'll be using separate hard disks for this, and installing Slackware second on the bigger of the two drives. When I've done this in the past I've used Grub; Is there anything I need to know or pitfalls I need to avoid doing it with Lilo?

I just bought a new Windows 7 machine and want to install Ubuntu 10.10 for a dual boot environment.There's a lot of info describing how to do this, but it all describes re-partioning the Windows drive, burning Ubuntu on a CD, inserting that CD, etc. I had a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu machine that just died on me. Windows was on one hard drive and Ubuntu - along with my entire software development environment - was on the other. As far as I know both drives are fine.
When my new (Windows) machine gets here I want to open it up and stick in the Ubuntu hard drive from my old machine... but then I'm not sure what to do. I'd really like to be able to boot to that hard drive (or the Windows one), just like I did before. It seems that this should be simpler than installing a fresh Ubuntu from a special CD, after all, everything is already expanded and working on the hard drive. Can someone give me some pointers that will help me solve this problem?
I'm a n00b at dual booting and I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate hard drive than my Windows 7 64 bit one in a dual boot situation. I have read that you can do this by unplugging the Windows hard drive, install Ubuntu on the other one, and than plug the Windows hard drive back in and everything will be fine and dandy. Is this correct? If it is, will I have to manually set the Primary and Secondary drive (in the BIOS I think?), or will it automatically do that.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi Have two Hard-drives a WD 500Gb Sata with windows 7 installed and an IDE Maxtor 40Gb mounted as slave .I want Ubuntu to be installed on the Maxtor.I usually used to choose grub to be installed on the MBR of the first one , but that meant that every time i needed to reinstall windows or Ubuntu i Would loose both of them, how to do so, without effecting the boot loader of the windows but still capable of booting both.Story made short, if i disconnect any of the hard drives i would still be capable of booting into the other.

I did the install from the 64 bit edition Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala iso file and when I restart is gives me the no root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. Unfortunately I don't know if it means the window installation or the Ubuntu one. I also don't know exactly how to get to it if it isn't the windows one. I also want a triple boot with Windows XP Professional SP 3 32 bit.
The Problem, installing ubuntu over top of windows and vice versa causes the windows boot menu to forget about ubuntu.The Solution:1. Using bcdedit from within windows to edit the boot menuClick Start -> Type Cmd.exe run it in elevated mode (as an administrator) by right clicking it and selecting "Run As Administrator" Inside the console type bcdedit, notice that the ubuntu boot entry is still there, for example i use three o/s , windows 7 professional x64, windows 7 ultimate x64 and Kubuntu and it looks like this

My question is about the /boot partition option. If I was to create a /boot partition, would that prevent Windows from erasing Grub when I reinstall Windows? I have been Googling and I can't find an answer so I figure it won't work but I better ask as it would make life a whole lot easier.
right now I have windows 7 encrypted with truecrypt and I want to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04(not encrypted). I'm going to shrink my windows partition to install Ubuntu. Is there a way to add ubuntu to truecrypts bootloader?

Typically I'd install windows first and then add my second drive and install Ubuntu to the second drive. That's how I usually do it.I want to put in a new drive, install windows, then get it to dual boot using this existing Ubuntu disk. I need to get Grub on the windows disk and get the option to dual boot to the existing Ubuntu disk. I think.
Is there a way I could do this without having to start all over on the Ubuntu disk?
I'm still not all confident using sudo, so if you could explain what I need to do in simple steps including the commands I would be ever so grateful. View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to run Fedora 14 on hard drive SDA (1st drive in computer - 1 terabyte Western Digital) and also run Windows 7 on drive SDB (2nd drive in computer - 1 terabyte Hitachi)? I have been able to run both Windows and Fedora (Fedora installed last) on SDA, but all my attempts to have the two OSs running on different drives have failed. Am I attempting the impossible or can it be done? I'm not particularly concerned which OS goes on which drive, but Fedora grub doesn't seem to be able to pick up WIN7 when it is on drive SDB.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get a dual-boot system with a truecrypted Windows partition and grub 2 in combination to work successfully and to date, I haven't had much luck. I'm using the grub 2 version from Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.I understand from searching through Google that there is presently no easy way to chainload the Truecrypt boot loader from Grub 2 in a similiar way that was done with Grub 1. This is because the Grub 2 payload is much larger and actually overwrites some of the Truecrypt boot loader, preventing it from starting.Does anybody know what might be going wrong here? I've been looking for ages now and can't seem to find any solution to this problem apart from restoring the Truecrypt loader to the hard disk and trying to chainload Grub 2 from Truecrypt. I'd rather use Grub 2 as the main loader though as Ubuntu Linux will be the main operating system in use.
