View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to install debian on my old ibook g3. Upon normal boot I get a black screen with a bar (attached image) I boot the kernel with init 1 and I see that I have no xorg.conf, so naturally I input xorg -configure. Attached is the log, as I am under Windows and read it. Let me know what you think and let me know if you need any output from me[URL].. p.s As I'm a new member I can't attach anything yet so I uploaded it to media fire. ibook.zip (includes xorg.log & IMG_20110707_203900.jpg /984.41 KB)
View 14 Replies View RelatedI would like to build a bootable system image on an attached hard disk on a running CentOS machine.The hard disk would be moved to a headless server, where only SSH access would be available. It seems that all the documented install methods assume that the installation runs on the taget machine. In this case, I would like to create a bootable system image of CentOS on a running host system. The new install mage would generally have a newer version of CentOS than the running host system where the image is created. Also, I would prefer
to do a text-based install.
The reason for all this is that I have network access to several remote machines. I can ask disks to be moved between machines, but I have no physical access. In order to do software testing, I would like to have several system disks with different installed CentOS versions. It would be easer if I could build the system disks on one single machine. The hardware an all machines is very nearly identical.
I want to add my .tar files in the .iso image of redhat cd and untar the same at desired location using some script.how do I add the files in the ISO image?where to place the script? how to link the script so that it is executed after the installation completes (redhat).

View 5 Replies View Relatedim not quite sure how to succintly say what is happening. the general idea is that my internet stopped working and I dont know why. I have a netbook that i am using while i am backpacking through asia. it has both ubuntu netbook ed, and winXP dual booting on it. out of the blue, i could not aquire an ip address through dhcp. This was true in both windows and linux, AND true while using either a wireless or wired connection. ok, that is odd, but not a big deal, i will just set the ip / subnet mask / gateway / dns manually. After doing this the computer reports properly connecting to the internet (did the same tests and got the same results in both nix and winxp), however I could not do anything on the internet. could not ping, nor do a dns lookup much less anything else.
scraching my head I looked around the internet for a solution and came across 'netsh int ip reset' this is a command I typed into the windows command line. I'm not sure what it does, but it worked so far as now

I am using apache2 with subversion and trying to get post commit script to run an svn update command. All svn commands seem to work fine manually
Everything used to work fine but then the server ip changed and I can no longer access it with the web name and have to use the ip directly
I am using tortoise svn with vista on my work machine

I think what i need to do is update the certifcate for the apache2, but I'm not sure how to do this, where to put it, and then which of the thousand apache config lines needs to be changed
For some odd reason, I cannot post on the ubuntu forum and the LinuxMint forum. Yea, I know.... the irony... I am using Mozilla and have tried Chromium, but that did not fix my problem. When I click on "submit" to post a thread, the page will just say "loading..." and nothing happens for a really long time. Does anyone know what is up? I tried posting on one other forum that I go to often and it seems to work out fine. I haven't tried any other forums though.

I have vlc 1.1.4 installed, using ubuntu 10.10, libdvdcss2 installed. for the rest of the video formats it seems to work fine. any ideas on what should I start debugging?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.
I would like to change my startup image (usplash image). For that i change /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu_logo.png and /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu_logo16.png. Then the splash screen of shutdown screen changes .But booting screen doesnot change.

I like to know how I can get the server online and actually connect a domain to it? I have the ISPConfig setup and it runs perfectly fine, what I like to know is:
How do I attached a IP to the server? (or can I just access it using the IP i have now?)
I have just exported 3 png files out of gimp for a html document I'm working on right now, and they are all almost the same, except I need each to load when the user does something. So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.

The problem:
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank).
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great.
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.

Formerly it was possible to send attached files using the "-a" option eg. mailx -a /home/yan/textfile [URL]. (I think -a stood for "attached". At the time the "-a" option figured as an option for sending attached files.Now it is an option for sending headers. how one can now send attached files using mailx?

That is because the machine is under my wife's desk and she is getting a little ticked off that there is a screen right by her foot. The problem is that if I remove the screen then the system gives me a startup error and will not boot. I then have to reattach the screen and select normal startup.

How can I force X to start up without a monitor attached?
I had 9.10 x64 Desktop installed on a nettop I have (that I normally run headless), and yesterday I decided to take the plunge and update to 10.04. So, I plugged in a screen and usb mouse/keyboard and set to work.
It was 1am, and it was telling me it had 3hrs left to install all the new packages, so I unplugged the screen and usb mouse/keyboard, left the box running, and went to bed. This evening, I plugged it all back in again to check progress. It's asking if I want to remove obsolete packages. I do, but neither the mouse nor keyboard work!
I can access the box via SSH like I normally do; is there any way I can re-enable the keyboard from there?
I'm reluctant to restart the box (via ssh) mid-way through such a complicated upgrade.

My computer is hanging on boot if I do not have the USB drive attached. The USB is in /etc/fstab as: UUID=023d6f83-04f5-4248-82d6-c2dbd1a77e18 /mnt/usbdrive ext4 defaults 0 0
This is all I can see on the monitor once it hangs (Ubuntu1004 is the label on my root filesystem): fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 Ubuntu1004: clean, 56288/1921360 files, 425861/7681078 blocks
If I plug in the USB drive while it is at this point, it is happy and continues booting...
Here is some output from /var/log/messages if it helps at all (I'm assuming the 6.977 and 120.245 are times, meaning I plugged in the USB drive at 120 seconds, so you can see that it was hung up during that time):

Having had an old machine running SMEServer for some time, I've decided it doesn't suit my needs and I've gone the Ubuntu Server 10.04 root. I'm having trouble connecting to a HP LaserJet 5P attached to the parallel port of the server. I had no trouble connecting to it when the server was running SMEServer, however, as this distro is aimed at Windows clients, the printer was configured as a Samba share.
In the new 10.04 configuration, I do not have Samba installed as I have no need for it. I'm exclusively Linux based (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop). Surely I do not have to install Samba in order to print?
I'm updating the netbook version of 10.04 to 10.10. It is apparently asking for user input regarding Grub. However I cannot move the windows around to click 'ok' nor will the keyboard function. No Alt+Tab, The terminal in the background will not get focus so I can't type in there, I can't get that little window 'Configu..' to get focus so I could just hit enter.
I can however click on all the icons on the left side of the title menu barBut only those.So I could logout if needed, but what would that do in the middle of an upgrade?It is honestly stuck, and I have little hope that I still have a usable system and will have to install from scratch.And I'm really fearful that grub is toast. And I'll first have to remove grub with a windows bootcd (it's a dual boot system). Which is hard since it's a netbook without a cd (will have to use a boot usb drive somehow)
I have an Epson RX610 printer attached to the USB port on my Thomson TG782T router.Works fine for our 4 PCs and laptops whilst running Windows XP.I don't seem to be able to add the printer under Ubuntu.I've tried all the addresses mentioned in the Active Network Connections.Ubuntu goes off an searches but doesn't find the printer (yes, it is switched on!)What address should I give it as a network printer?

PC Client (192.168.2.100) --> Router (192.168.2.1) --> DSLAM (on our internal network) --> PPPOE Server (192.168.9.1) on Linux Ubuntu 8.04 on interface card eth2.
On the same Linux Ubuntu Machine on interface card eth1 (static IP 192.168.5.100), I have an Asterisk SIP server plugged into it. SIP Server = 192.168.5.101 (static)
I need the PC client (192.168.2.100) to register via SIP soft phone to register on the SIP server (192.168.5.101). From the PC client I can ping as far as the eth1 interface (192.168.5.100)...but cannot ping the SIP Server (.101).
From the SIP server (192.156.5.101)...I can ping 192.168.5.100, I can ping 169.254.5.228 (Eth2:avahi), but not sure what that is. I cannot ping the pppoe default gateway (192.168.9.1), which I think you cannot anyway.
No firewalls are running. My IPtables I cleaned out totally. I think it might be as simple as a route add, but I really have no clue. Tried building a virtual bridge using brctl LINUX betweeh eth1 and eth2, but that made things worse (could not ping anything after that)

I do not understand why I cannot ping 192.168.5.100, but not .101 I have opened the Asterisk Sip Server to accept connections from 192.168.2.0, 192.168.5.0, and 192.168.9.0 subnets.
I upgraded last week from Koala to Lynx and my attached display is now blurred. Os: Lucid Lynx 10.04 with all updates Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1521 with an Envision 19" attached lcd display. Problem: blurred moving lines that move across the screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set a Ubuntu home server to be a Network Attached Drive, a Media server, and Backup server.All of the computers (mostly windows 7 machines) can see and connect with the shared ubuntu folders, and read write and execute files into the folders. The problem is when programs are installed onto the server they operating systems cannot have "Full control", or change the owner of a file.
This is an issue when using the Ubuntu shared folders as remote hard drive locations because when Windows goes to run the files it keeps popping up with the "Open file - Security Warning" preventing files from being natively run.
I have been using Linux and Ubuntu only since the last two months on my (2006) Sony Vaio VGN A617S laptop which is going pretty well on Ubuntu 10.10. When installing Ubuntu audio did get installed alright, and the speakers on the laptop itself are working well even now with the right drivers (snd-hda-intel) for the Realtek ALC260 soundcard.
My problem is when laptop is docked to the A/V docking station (I have seen it referred as a port replicator as well - the model number is VGP-PRAV2), with its two external speakers. And these were not on when Ubuntu was being installed. What is interesting is the headphones jack on the laptop does work when the docking station does not. I have been trying hard and have already tried quite a few things I saw to be related issues, like:
a) adjustments to some IEC958 in alsamixer
b) using a custom mod for the ALC260 card
