Since this afternoon every edge on my screen has gone fuzzy. It looks like a horizontal blur, I have attached two small screen shots of this window (although the problem is not limited to firefox, even just icons on the desktop looked smear towards the right). I do not think it is a problem with the screen because when I turn on the computer all is well. The problem only starts at the login prompt. I have had this problem once before using a previous version of fedora. Back then I did find a solution online but now I have spent my afternoon looking for a solution, trying any suggested change to xorg.conf and rebooting without success.
What does not work: Changing the resolution or colour setting Some Xorg.conf changes adding mode, a different depth, not sure what else. Here is a copy of etxX11xorg.conf # Xorg configuration created by system-config-display
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "single head configuration"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

I was using Fedora 11 for the past few months. It was working fine. I upgraded yesterday to Fedora 12 and now every time I boot up, the fedora logo screen comes up, the "f" is filled up and after that the screen goes hazy. I was expecting the login screen but nothing comes - the system freezes sort of.

I am using ATI HD3200 graphics card, and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on a laptop. It have VGA port so I can attach external LCD monitor to the laptop. I am using fglrx driver.
My question is how should I configure the xorg.conf file so that when I attached external monitor, the GNOME menu bar (Applications, Places and System, etc) will be put on the external monitor instead of laptop LCD monitor.
I have checked varies web resource that saying you can drag and drop the GNOME menu bar to the new screen, it never worked. Someone also suggested to add new bar into the screen and GNOME will remember it, I can't even find the option to do that.

I have the System of 9.04, but have a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10 too. But, I do not want to download all the massive Upgrades. Still, Ubuntu 9.10 is the best! So, can I upgrade 9.04 to 9.10 using the Live CD? (Offline).

In the last few weeks I upgraded my Ubuntu from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. No problems, everything went well. But yesterday I tried to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. Everything seemed to go OK until the upgrade was finished and I had to reboot. After the reboot, no Ubuntu anymore... I get GRUB, but when I continue to boot the latest kernel, I don't see any harddisk activity anymore after about 2 seconds.
Here on the forums I read that one should run the boot_info_script when having boot problems, so I already did. I booted the system with a 8.04 live USB stick. And here is the result of the boot_info_script:

I currently use Karmic Koala (9.10) and want to upgrade to Maverick Meerkat (10.10). The thing is that Update Manager allows me to upgrade only to 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) but I cannot upgrade to Lucid Lynx because of a bug which freezes my keyboard and mouse. Also, upgrading first to 10.04 and then to 10.10 is quite time consuming. Can I upgrade directly to 10.10 from 9.10 without 10.04 acting as a mediator?

Upgraded. VBox (Win7 - 64bit) runs well, but does not see attached drives. Removed the drives, and attempting to re-attach, usually results in an immediate Windows 7 crash. Even when attached (lucky) - the drives do not re-attach after a VBox reboot. Is there some easy way to downgrade to 10.10??

Last Monday I upgraded the Ubuntu from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx in my laptop (HP Compaq volna 515), and I have no sound. Searching in linux forums for an answers, I've got that (as far as I understand) there's no unique solution for this problem.
This is my lspci code...
Also, I tried to clean up the pulse audio .. What is funny for me is that pulse audio and alsa, and the audio players seems to work normally (no error of device not found or something like that).. except that there's no sound out from the speakers.
Any suggestion to discover if the problem is drivers, kernel, packages, or hardware failure? more important, how do I get the sound back?

I reinstalled Ubuntu on my HP pc-40 computer. I used to run Hardy Heron and am now running Karmic Koala. The cd drive which had had issues for a while, broke after finishing the install, when I tried to get the cd out.I dont know if this has anything to do with it, or if my computer is too old for Karmic Koala, or if possibly the harddrive didn't appreciate being overwritten a second time - but the graphics are not working well (small squares of previous windows linger in my present browser window*)everythin is much slower, and many applications come up without a border, or their windows cant be moved with the mouse.
To top it off, while I tried to fix a bug with the terminal (no border) and uninstalled it, I couldnt install it back. So no terminal, which really makes even a newbie like me sad.If I cant solve it in a few days I will probably try to install a smaller distro via USB - I think Slax can be installed straight to USB without a live cd?

I just installed Fedora 13 x86_64 using default settings (after not using Linux for few years), everything went well, but the following question bugs me: All fonts used by Fedora GUI on my LCD (1680x1050 native resolution) seem a bit blurred, stretched, not as crisp as displayed by Windows on the same LCD, and also worse than what I see on my Mac notebook. Fedora fonts use more screen pixels and at the same time provide lower subjective quality, it hurts perception of the whole system . I wonder if it's a general problem with Fedora fonts quality, or I can tweak it somehow to get more aesthetically pleasing results.

This navigation icons on this page are blurred: [URL] For example, the top row nav buttons, Home:Show Notes:Articles:Screencasts:About Us. As well as the CC icons in the left column. And at [URL] All of the nav button in yellow across the top have very blurred text, as well as most of the photos of products on their pages have jagged edges. In Windows these things are crystal clear--no blurring, no jagged edges.

After installation of 11.3 I had intermittent hangs and blurred icons.
"My Computer" told me I had a Nvidia GeForce 9100 and a driver called "gallium". That was the problem.
I added "ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3" to my repository and found a new driver to install. That solved my problems. Now my systems are rock solid.

I upgraded ubuntu 9.10 from the update manager- it had a couple of problems, and now when I boot there's no display- I'm pretty sure it's just the graphics driver since it loads up and plays the login sound.I'm currently running off a CD version of 9.10 and when I chroot the drive with 10 and sudo apt-get upgrade it says there's some stuff that depend on fglrx, and that it's not there. There were proprietary drivers installed before the upgrade- Is there an easy way to just run with non-proprietary drivers? Or to install non-proprietary drivers to another drive?
(I don't really know what I'm doing, if I need to boot to recovery mode and do stuff could someone please tell me how to do that? The only info I can find is maybe possibly press Esc during the os boot and that doesn't seem to work for me)

I've a display issue after upgrading to 10.10 . I have a Dell Inspiron notebook with an ATI 1200 chip set. Prior to the 10.10 upgrade I could connect a higher resolution monitor to the VGA port and hit Function F8 to switch my display from the notebook display to the external display to take advantage of the higher resolution of the external display. With the 10.10 upgrade when I switch to the external display I have no window management functions, ie I can't resize or move windows because there is nothing to grab onto. If I click the show desktop icon I get a message to the effect that the function isn't available for GDM "unknown".If I used mirrored displays with the external and internal displays at the same resolution then I do have window management functions.

I upgraded my HP Elitebook 6930p from 9.04 to 9.10. When X starts the display shows random lines. I can boot into "recover" mode from GRUB and get the command prompt. 9.04 worked fine so I'm pretty sure it's not the video card. The video card is ATI Radeon HD 3400.

I have a problem since an update some weeks ago but I cannot remember which one, because I thought it would get fixed so I didn't revert back. The display shakes very often depending on the type of window displayed and I think it has to do with the hardware driver (nvidia 185 restricted). Was there an update not long ago?
You can look at the problem there:http://www.......com/watch?v=Es0CVNmXGJ8.I had to record it with an external camera because using GTK-recordMyDesktop the recording is flawless. As you can see sometimes it's almost unusable. It has nothing to do with compiz or emerald or awn or any effect, because even with everything turned off I have the same problem.

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro (64-bit).Install went smoothly.Upon restart, everything works fine up until the log-in screen. The normal hardware checks all run and the new white Ubuntu symbol appears but when it switches to the log-in screen, a "No signal" message appears on the display and the green power light goes orange.
I can still log-in remotely from another machine and access all the files and drives, run jobs etc., so the machine did start-up properly, it is just an issue with the display.

My display settings seem to have been corrupted after I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. I can only view my screen in 1280 x 1024 - no other resolutions work. Ubuntu is also not detecting my monitor, a Dell E193FP (19"). In reading some other posts, I see that the first question will be to post my xorg file, which follows.

Today I installed all the updates that were associated with the 2.6.31-17 kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 9.10.It appears the update has broken my stock 17-inch Macbook Pro 5,2 because after restarting my screen is just black. I don't see the ReFit choice menu (I have OS X and Ubuntu installed), and even when I let the machine boot all the way into Mac OS X the screen just remains black. The apple logo on the back of the screen doesn't turn on at all.
I can see the keyboard backlights eventually come on (which is normal when you get to Mac OS X login prompt) - so its almost as if its booting but just wont talk to the display. When you press the brightness buttons you can faintly see the shade of black changing. What the heck has happened? I just paid a big load of money for this baby and I'm very sad now I love Ubuntu but this is ridiculous.

I just did the upgrade and I want to turn off the display after 30 minutes. I check that selection but the display does not turn off after 30 minutes. It is still on. I enabled this setting through the power management. The screen saver is on, go to blank display but the monitor does not turn off.
On Windows, dual boot on the same machine, the monitor does display off. I don't know if this is part of the problem or not, but when I go to "System -> Preferences", there are two different "Screensaver" options.

I used Ubuntu 9 (Karmic Koala) for some time with no problems. When I upgraded to Ubuntu 10 (Lucid Lynx) I ran into graphics issues. After I log in, the screen scrambles (a purple/green mess)--impossible to decipher anything, although I can get out by marking the spot on the screen to click for a restart, so Linux is working behind the scenes. If I start in recovery mode with basic graphics, I have no problems at all (other than limited functionality). If I start the old 2.6.31-22 kernel, I see a bunch of "unmountable" errors in the startup script, but I can use Linux normally with no apparent problems. I'm running an IBM ThinkPad A30 with ATI Mobility graphics. Just to reiterate, the screen looks fine until I log in, at which point it goes bonkers. I've tried lowering the resolution, to no avail. I'm not running any proprietary drivers. What do I need to change in order to fix this?
