CentOS 5 :: Build A Bootable System Image On An Attached Hard Disk On A Running Machine?

I would like to build a bootable system image on an attached hard disk on a running CentOS machine.The hard disk would be moved to a headless server, where only SSH access would be available. It seems that all the documented install methods assume that the installation runs on the taget machine. In this case, I would like to create a bootable system image of CentOS on a running host system. The new install mage would generally have a newer version of CentOS than the running host system where the image is created. Also, I would prefer
to do a text-based install.
The reason for all this is that I have network access to several remote machines. I can ask disks to be moved between machines, but I have no physical access. In order to do software testing, I would like to have several system disks with different installed CentOS versions. It would be easer if I could build the system disks on one single machine. The hardware an all machines is very nearly identical.

i want to setup multiple xen on a remote server in a datacenter, this is first time i am doing it, i want to know when we do it on a local machine it asks for bootable DVD to be inserted, but that can't be done on a remote server, so is there a way we can give it the path of some directory which behaves as a bootable dvd and install the os

I have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.

I have an old unuseable computer at home that became useless after a hard disk failure. I don't want to spend money on buying a new PATA IDE HDD for it, so I was wondering if I can use a PXE boot server on my notebook (using a virtual machine with Linux) and boot a Linux on the old machine with PXE without using Hard Disk. It is possible? Do I will need to make some extra configuration or use some specific enviroment do do this?

I just invested nearly 12 hours configuring a CCTV system using CentOS 5.5 Server and Zoneminder. I have it setup just the way I want it. I would like to make a clone image of the drive just in case disaster strikes (lightning strike, failed hard disk, etc). In the Windows PC world, I use a program called Ghost to make a mirror image of a hard disk. I power the computer down, run Ghost to make a block level clone of the drive, then power it back up. Can I assume that will work with CentOS without problem?
In the computer now is a 320GB SATA drive. One partition on it is swap, and the other is ext3. There is no raid setup on the drive. I have an identical 320GB drive I could use and keep it in the computer unplugged from the power and not spinning. That way if anything ever happens, I can power down, move the power and data cable to the new drive and power it back up. Granted, I will lose any new config and database changes, but it will be a lot better than starting back at square 1 and reconfiguring the entire OS and software.

I have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.

I have seen that is possible to boot from a USB stick and use a USB memory as hard drive.I have a server enable to hold 6 sata drives 3.5", But I want to use the 6 drives and make a Raid-5 setup for backups 5 -1 spare. /boot cannot be on a raid-5 level 0 or 1. But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.
Using 4 disk for raid-5 2 TB I will have 6TB no spare, no spare is not a good option at least I will prefer 1 spare.Well, I was thinking, the server MoBo have USB support, if I open the box I can see the small entrances, If Centos let me installed on a USB memory drive, can I trust a USB memory stick?t night with bacula.

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

I am trying to port the current Fedora4 system to the CentOS5 on a new hard disk. Actually, the Fedora4 system is constantly being hacked due to my lazy update. So i prefer a fresh install of CentOS5. I am not clear what files need copy and what does not need for ease and for avoiding possible backdoors.

My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

Recently my had disk crashed. It has taken me over a day to install and setup the drive - time I can't really afford. I'd like to know how I can clone a second as a bootable copy of the main hard drive and update from time to time. Therefore if the main hd fails again, I can simple boot from the second drive.How can I do this? I have two sata drives in the box, running 10.10 desktop.

my old pc died not long ago so I retrieved its hard disk and bought a USB enclosure. that HD had a ubuntu 9.04 partition and an XP one. Something must have gone wrong somewhere as, although i could still boot from jaunty, I was not allowed to upgrade.
It therefore seemed to me natural perform a clean install, so here's what I did:
- on a win7 computer, I inserted a 9.10 bootable disk
- with usb-disk creator, I wanted to install via a spare image so re-formatted the HD
- I couldn't install a mythbuntu 9.10 after that as I giot an error message ("can't mount the drive" or something similar). yet, in win7 the HD is recognised.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are USB HDs not included as USB devices that you can make bootable? Or should I be installing a !straight" ubuntu version, then install MythTV?

All of my PCs are set up to either run Ubuntu directly, or are dual boot Ubuntu and some variant of Windows. One of the things I like about this is that in the rare instances that I get a virus I can simply boot into Ubuntu and run ClamAV to remove the virus from there.
I have a friend who recently picked up a nasty virus and we are having a hard time getting his machine to boot at all without all sort of strange behaviors. Under that scenario I can't trust Wubi to work correctly. Soo....
Is it possible for me to create a bootable CD, DVD or USB drive from my machine? I'd like to use my machine because I can update the virus definitions before I create the image and then use that to clean his machine.

I am new to the Linux world and I am not sure if what I am trying to do is achievable or not. I am trying to make an image of my existing drives running Linux on a USB and I want to use the same image off the USB to clone more bootable hard drives. Something like what Ghost does in windows. The problem is using 'dd' the image is too big ( I have 1tb drives ) and then I am not sure how to convert these images back on to new drives so that they boot in the OS as well. i am not sure if there is a utility that would let you do that?

the HDAPS system in IBM / Lenovo Thinkpad laptops is, in principle, supported by the hdaps kernel module. However, it is actually *useless* since it refuses to load on current models which report Lenovo as vendor ID instead of IBM The alternative is the tp_smapi module which, according to ThinkWiki, is strongly recommended anyway. It is not available in any CentOS repo, so I tried to compile it. However, I get the following error:

I'm trying to make a bootable USB disk by using syslinux. The USB disk is recognized as /dev/sdc.

After executing the above two commands, it generates errors as follow:
