Ubuntu :: Printing Corrupted - Get Substituted / Print A Blank Space / Print A Box

Mar 23, 2011

Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.

I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

Debian Configuration :: New Image-2.6.39-1-686-pae Image-686-pae?

May 21, 2011

WTF why is it with every update the devs try to break something. Might as well be using Ubuntu at this point and No I do not want to install Stable. Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.

Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - OpenOffice QuickStarter Icon (Old Image)

Sep 25, 2010

The OpenOffice Quickstarter icon in the system tray for Ubuntu 10.04 is an old image and does not fit in with the default theme (light grey background). In fact, the same icon used for the Windows version is at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/openofficeorg3-startcenter.png. Where the quickstarter getting this misfitting icon? Perhaps I could simply copy the icon above to the location and file name used by quickstarter.

OpenSUSE :: OpenOffice Crash When Opening Image File?

Jul 16, 2010

I wanted to compose a letter and include photos that are on my other (secondary) hd. When I navigate to the folder that the photo is in, OpenOffice suddenly crashes without warning. Then I have to recover my file. If I insert a photo from my main hd (the one with SuSE 11.2 on it) then there's no problem. Why does it crash when I try to go into my other hard drive? (It gets automatically mounted as /local when I boot into the system). I'm running Open SuSE 11.2 and OpenOffice (from an .rpm)

Software :: GIMP Script-fu To Print An Image?

Dec 6, 2010

I'm not a Script-fu expert but I did manage to get a Script-fu script to at least not throw up any errors. However, it also doesn't work. I've written a bash script to use gphoto2 and imagemagick to snap a picture, download, rotate and crop it ready for print. I'd like to automate the final step and have The GIMP or some other program print it.

My script-fu script is:
(define (printshot filename)
(let* ((image (car(gimp-file-load RUN-NONINTERACTIVE filename filename)))
(gimp-print-gtk RUN-NONINTERACTIVE image)
(gimp-image-delete image)))

and my bash script to call it is: gimp -i -b '(printshot $1)' -b '(gimp-quit)' I know it's executing the script-fu script because I have received error messages when I do something invalid in it. However, I don't get any output. I get the same thing when I run it from the Script-fu console. It seems to execute but doesn't print anything.

Ubuntu :: Libreoffice Calc 3.3.3 Causes System Freeze

Jul 29, 2011

I frequently (i.e. after 10-20 minutes of use) get a complete system freeze when using LibreOffice Calc 3.3.3, on Ubuntu 11.04. At the time, I have an *.ods file open, and the freeze happens at various times, for example just after pressing the Page Up button. After the freeze occurs, nothing responds, not even Ctrl+Alt+F1, and I have to force power off my laptop.

how to debug this problem, as there's no error message, no error log (that I know of??)..

Ubuntu :: Blank Desktop Appearing - Just Color No Image

Jan 20, 2009

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex dual-booting with Vista for work purposes. I have been running the two successfully for quite a few months now and am just getting to grips with it. I have lost my desktop at start-up. I get all the way past the Login to a blank desktop background (just colour - no image) and the only thing visible is a Terminal window. As I am not familiar with Linux command lines I can't do very much. I have even tried reinstalling Ubuntu which showed no error messages that I noticed but, I have the same result. At the moment I have used Supergrub to allow me to boot straight to Vista till I get things sorted out.

Ubuntu Security :: Mount The Image Or Extract The Image To Another Drive?

Feb 16, 2011

I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.

Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.

I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.

Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.

Fedora :: Writing Partition Image To Free Space At End Of Drive?

Aug 22, 2011

restore a partition images on another machine to the unused space on my laptop. I'm using netcat and dd to restore the partition.

On laptop:

nc -l 9000 | dd bs=1024 conv=notrunc,noerror seek=<some block pos> of=/dev/sda

On W/S:

dd if=part.img bs=1024 | nc 9000

The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?

cat /proc/partitions

Displays blocks per partition. I could add those numbers up but is sure would be nice to have a utility that just give you what you need.
