View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu server 10.10 on my new computer which uses AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. But I have noticed that my CPU cores were not able to run at 3.6GHz at any time, even when I only have one CPU-intensive computing job. They are either at 3.2 GHz or 800 MHz, like this
Code:
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i "cpu Mhz"
cpu MHz: 800.000
cpu MHz: 3200.000
cpu MHz: 3200.000
[code]....
My maximum CPU frequency seems to be locked at 3.2 Ghz:
Code:
$ dmesg | grep "pstate 0"
[ 1.595918] powernow-k8: 0 : pstate 0 (3200 MHz)
I goggled around and it seems that Linux 2.8.35 kernel have solved the problem. I just do not understand why it does not work on mine.
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux hogwarts 2.6.35-22-server #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 22:02:33 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I have Phenom II X6 1055T. If Turbo Core kicks in, the speed should go up to 3.2GHz.
Problem is, it never kicks in. My kernel enabled Turbo Core already.
dmesg :
I am guessing, TurboCore depends with the P-State reading and cpu frequency thingy. As you can see, P0 are not 3200MHz (if my hypothesis are correct). Or perhaps i am wrong. I tested by not doing nothing and running folding program on one core with conky monitoring. Conky reads 5 cores at 800MHz, and one core at 2.8GHz.
TurboCore is enable on windows xp. I can see the core sometimes goes up to 3.2Ghz occasionally.
I have a server hosted elsewhere and I am wondering if there is a way to know if my Server has turbo mode enabled or not?
I have i5 @ 750 Intel. It support Turbo mode but am not sure if my server has got it enabled or not.
In our college all the systems (running on windows xp) have TURBO C/C++ installed on them which we use for C programming. I recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on me laptop (DELL Inspiron 14R (N4010) with some modifications) i read somewhere on the internet that Gedit can be used for writing a programme in ubuntu which can be compiled using gcc. Well if i use Gedit rather than Turbo c will i experience any differnce?, i mean is there any problem in doing so?? Or i should prefer running turbo c using DOS BOX?

Basically, I bought a Telstra Turbo USB broadband stick and I've been having a bit of hell getting it to work. First I couldn't get the computer to recognize it had been plugged in at all. I downloaded the modeswitch packages to no avail. I tried a few other terminal tweaks but they didn't change anything either. I left the card in and restarted the netbook and it finally recognized the wireless card. I was able to surf the internet for an hour or so a couple times. But after stowing the computer away for a couple hours and turning it on again, I found that this work around was no longer effective. So now I'm back to the blue light never blinking and I have to tether my phone and pay ridiculous data charges because I'm in the middle of nowhere.
I'm really new at troubleshooting things that don't work right out of the box.
It's a telstra turbo prepaid wireless broadband. The stick isn't even recognized as removable media.

Due to some reason every-time I boot the laptop the power governors reset themselves to "ondemand". Which causes my laptop to overheat until it shut-downs. I tried adding this line to grub Code: Select allGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_pstate=disable" which kinda worked, but only on cpu 0.
Code: Select allcpufreq-info

I've clean installed over a friend's win98 with Mint 7 (disc from lab a year? or so ago).
My Optus modem prompted the wizard and now always works fine,ok speed, and I updated Mint with 300 new files etc.
But my friend's new Telstra Turbo modem,[Sierra brand] although it shows a blue light flashing, doesn't get the wizard connection process started, and there's just NO sign on Mint that it's plugged in.
If I can get it to work, it will increase the number of people I know who use linux to 1.
I've got a dual Xeon 5570 (Nehalem) server. It clocks down properly, but never, under any circumstances that I've found, clocks up past its TSC. Even when running basically nothing but cat /dev/zero > /dev/null, nothing gets clocked higher than the TSC. Below is the turbostat output, which clearly knows what the hardware is actually capable of, but it never actually achieves it. I'm running Lenny, with backported kernel 2.6.30-bpo.2-amd64. I tried the 2.6.32 backport and there wasn't any difference. know where I should look next? BIOS settings? Do I need to change some kernel option and recompile?
# ./turbostat
Nehalem multiplier 22, TSC frequency 2933 MHz
Nehalem 4 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 3 cores active: 24 mult, max turbo frequency = 3200 MHz
Nehalem 2 cores active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz
Nehalem 1 core active: 25 mult, max turbo frequency = 3333 MHz

I just installed a new HP DL360 with 32 GB of RAM and a Intel Xeon X5550 which supports speed stepping and turbo mode. I've enabled turbo in the BIOS, but cannot seem to get CentOS 5.4 to make use of either of these features. I've been googling for a solution for a while now, and tried various things, such as installing cpufreq. However, when I type cpufreq-info, I get this:
# cpufreq-info
cpufrequtils 005: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006

this might not seem a big issue but I'd really like to know whether it's possible to stop Nautilus from unfocusing windows when pressing on an item in another windows and draging it to the first one. For example, I want to move a file from one window to another. I click the middle mouse button on that item and drag it to the first one which looses it's focus so often it's quite irritating.
View 6 Replies View RelatedBackground: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.
What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.
Questions:
1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?
2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.
3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?
4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??
(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)
I am a ubuntu novice. I am running 10.04 LTS on a Lenova laptop. Runs fine. Yesterday upgraded firefox and upgraded Java 6 from update 20 to update 24 so that I could use the Zotero bibiliographic program in FF. After the upgrade and restart, the windows title bar that includes minimize, maximize and close buttons has disappeared from all windows that I open except google chrome. If I open and app, or FF, or the dvd player, title bar is gone. I have noticed that Java updates have caused similar problems before but none of the prescribed steps seems to have changed my system

I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu. Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
Well i was playing with some of the features Compiz has to offer, and im liking some of the stuff, i was using wobbly windows yesterday and it was perfectly fine, so i set it and left it, today i try and play around with it and the windows don't wobble when i drag them, however they do when i minimize or maximize.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
I have 10.10 installed within my Windows Xp.All was fine. Then,I upgraded to 11.04.Boot screen etc is fine .Log in is automatic in Classic.Unity & Compiz not supported. Now,again everything is fine except that my xp partitions are not recognised and hence I can not mount them and access them.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?
