General :: Prevent Evince From Contacting Other Instances?

Jul 23, 2010

Okay, this issue is kinda difficult to understand without context: When we run Evince, it checks if there is any other instance running. If there is one, the evince command exits immediately, right after passing the parameter to the running instance If no other instance is running, a new one will be started, and the evince command will wait until this new instance exits. While that behavior is quite nice, it is not helpful for shell scripts. Why? Because I have a script that writes a temporary .ps file, calls a PS/PDF viewer, and automatically deletes the temporary .ps file after the viewer exits. Unfortunately, this script only works if evince was not previously running (if evince was running, then the file is deleted too fast).

I don't want to add extra complexity to this script. It should be kept simple, because I may want to replace evince with xpdf, gv, or anything else. I was expecting some kind of command-line parameter to evince (similar to -f to vim and gvim), but I fear there is no such option. Writing a wrapper script around evince might be a good solution, but this script should work correctly in all cases (if evince was running and if it wasn't).

Fedora :: Install Anything; The Package Manager Is Having Trouble Contacting The Source?

May 25, 2011

I first installed Fedora 15 (full clean install) on a spare laptop I had sitting around and the install went flawlessly. I was able to install it and use it right out the gate. I was then able to install two of my must-have programs, xchat and libreoffice without any problems either.Then I tried the same thing on my primary desktop at work (and since I run an IT department, I already have permission to do this :-)

The problem I'm getting is trying to install anything;the package manager is having trouble contacting the source.The exact error reads: "Software source download failed. Could not contact source 'fedora', so it will be disabled."I have not made anychanges to the firewall on the machine and the machine does have a working internet connection (I am posting from the machine). Any tips or advice on ways to troubleshoot would be great. I'm by no means a linux expert, but I can get around the system fairly well

Ubuntu :: Evolution Email - Intersperse Replies Into Quoted Email?

I use 'quoted' style for reply emails. I want to be able to intersperse my replies within a quoted reply i.e. if the email had three paragraphs, I'd like to be able to have my replies between each of the paragraphs. At the moment, I don't seem to be able to do anything other than delete from the quoted section - I try to simulate my requirements by cutting and then 'paste quotation', but this doesn't always work as sometimes Evolution adds too many levels of '> ' .

Ubuntu :: Use An Email Client Like Alpine To Read Imported Email?

Feb 24, 2011

we had a server with Hostway, and it was running ubuntu. The server also had Plesk installed, which did some funny things. We had several websites on that server, and many email addresses. Then we changed servers. Now we have a server through Rackspace and it is also running Ubuntu. It also has Virtualmin installed, which generally does not impose as many unconventional changes on Ubuntu as Plesk did.

Rather than using Thunderbird to download my email (which is what I used to do) I've decided I'll start reading my email on the server. So I will ssh to the server and then use some email client, such as Alpine, to read the email. So I installed Alpine. I have an email account for "lawrence". The email address is lawrence @ krubner. Currently, when mail arrives for that account, it is stored here:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new

and then it is transferred to hear:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur

When I start Alpine, while logged in as lawrence, Alpine automatically sets up an inbox for me here:

/home/lawrence/mail/

How do I get Alpine (or any other client) to read from the correct folder? I'm fairly sure the email package (the MTA) at work on this new server is Postfix. As near as I can tell, my email is held for 24 hours in this folder:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new

and then it gets transferred here:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur

Alpine only lets me set one path for my Inbox, so I'm not sure what path I should set. If I use "cur" I will see all email 1 day late, but if I use "new" then I will miss email if I go a day without checking.

Networking :: Display DNS & DGW Provided By DHCP Server ?

May 4, 2011

"/etc/sysconfig/network" (/etc/sysconfig/network/routes undef SuSE).

So, when I want to display those values, I just display the contents of the file. But, if my TCP configuration uses DHCP server ... I dont know the command to display those values. PD.- in straight : I need a command to display the DNS's in effect on a TCP/IP configuration that uses a DHCP server. Also, a command to display Default Gateway would be welcome.

General :: Windows Clients Not Using NTP Server Provided Via DHCP?

May 31, 2010

I have a network consisting mostly of Windows Vista and 7 clients and an Ubuntu server. The server provides both the DHCP and NTP services through dhcp3-server and openntpd. In my dhcpd.conf, the subnet is declared as follows:

subnet 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 10.10.10.10 10.10.10.200;
option broadcast-address 10.10.10.255;
option routers 10.10.10.1;
option ntp-servers 10.10.10.1;

The clients don't seem to be using the NTP server though. When I capture the network traffic with Wireshark during the DHCP process, I also see no mention of the NTP option in the DHCP offer message. I am not quite sure if the clients would have to specifically request that option to receive it or if I have to make another configuration to offer the option.

Debian :: Use Aptitude To Check For An Installed Provided Package?

Jan 15, 2011

I regularly compile something from a source repository that has a certain set of dependencies. Some of these dependencies are dev libraries that are provided via other libraries but are not considered installed packages in themselves, so I cannot test for some dependencies directly.

I am currently parsing an "apt-cache showpkg" output to check for some of these provided dependencies. This is somewhat kludge-y and messy, and I was looking for a more elegant solution.

Is there an APTITUDE option that will directly test for the presence of a library that is part of some other package without having to know the name of the package that the library is part of?

Security :: Detect Whether Firewall Service Is Provided By Server Or By ISP?

Sep 16, 2010

I have two servers behind different networks. First network is protected with firewall provided by the router and there is no firewall in the server:

[Code]....

As you see, there are no difference in nmap output If I check with tcpdump, which packets are sent from 192.168.217.73 and 192.168.13.19(tcpdump -i eth0 src host 192.168.217.73 and tcpdump -i eth0 src host 192.168.13.19 respectively) towards me during nmap scan, there are none. It's understandable, as there should be no reply when port is filtered. Is there somehow possible to detect, whether firewall is active in the server or in the router?
