View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to introduce my friends to this wonderful OS . I am looking for a Fedora derivative that can be run on a Pentium iii with 256 mb of ram .
After a respective amount of Google-ing, I did not manage to come up with an answer to this. This has been a problem for several people because Ubuntu or any other distribution that I know of does not support the Linksys AE1000 card. It's kinda a pain because my desktop needs wireless in order to connect to the internet (for several reasons...) Is anybody working on the drivers for this? I would prefer not to be stuck with Windows. I would love to run a light weight distro on it instead.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I wanted to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my ASUS 900a that only has 4GB of disk space. Of course Ubuntu 11.04 requires 4.4GB, so I started looking for alternatives.I tried to get Lubuntu 11.04, but when I ran the installation process it states that 5GB are required. Not very light weight IMHO if this is the case.I was hoping that someone had an idea of how to install a strippted version of Ubuntu 11.04 (maybe without some of the apps like the LibreOffice Suite) or knew why Lubuntu was asking for so much hard drive space.I'm hoping to move away from my light-weight version of WinXP.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI used to dual-boot, windows 7 and Ubuntu, but like a month ago, i decided to finally kill windows, so when i finished doing so, i had 160 GB. of free space. I never resized my ubuntu partition, since it had like 80 GB. of free space.Yesterday, I re-compiled my kernel, mainly to enable FrameBuffer in the console. So i decided it was time to resize my partition, to use the whole HDD.Turns out, that i had a little bit of problems compiling my kernel, and yes it took really a lot more than i thought ( I had to compile it twice ) but finally i got it working.
i still got some 100 GB. free, so is there anyway to get my system to it's normal weight?.I really don't wanna miss all my info, specially my programs, and customized desktop, it really took me a wile to set compiz just the way i like it.IM REALLY SORRY, I KNOW IT WAS MY FAULT, BUT I REALLY DON'T WANNA LOSE ALL THAT GB. NOR MY SYSTEM.
I have an old PC Pentium III 1000 Mhz . With 256 ram and 20 GB hard disk .
I have Ubuntu (which runs very slow ) Lubuntu (currently using ) Puppy Linux and DSL .
Suggest me distros which can run normally and also have good looks and mature bulit.
I have made a based ARM Debian system by using the debootstrap tool, and installed the LXDE Desktop System by using the follow commands.
apt-get update
apt-get install lxde
However, The LXDE Desktop System can't boot when i reboot. What can i do next ?
I use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Jessie. 64 bits. I have been using Sound Converter in other distros (LMDE, Ubuntu, etc) in the past.Jessie has Sound Converter 2.1.3. I think I have installed the needed codecs. When I try to convert from mp4 to mp3, the program gets stuck, and nothing happens. Other formats can be converted.
When I use SoundKonverter (also in Jessie, version 2.1.1) it works with no problem, converting from mp4 to mp3. Nevertheless I would prefer to use Sound Converter.
I'm trying Connochaet OS (ex Deli Linux - for low resource machines) and it's coming with xxxterm as the web browser.Well, this browser works well and is lightweight. I would recommend it right away for people with very low RAM in their PCs.Ok, I didn't try Flash but I don't care about this. It's a webkit browser, like uzbl. This latter one I never tried.

I have some USB-Serial converters and when I connect any of them for the first time a /dev/ttyUSB0 node is created.
If I disconnect the device and then reconnect it then a /dev/ttyUSB1 node is created y I do the same again (reconnect) a /dev/ttyUSB2 node is created...
This is annoying because if mostly use only one converter at a time and because of the device node changing I have to reconfigure my software.
To reset the numbering of the device node I can force the reload of the usbserial module but before (I don't know when before) this was not necessary.
I have also checked if the device is being in use before disconnecting it (with lsof) and the device is not being used.
I'm running Debian Testing amd64 with KDE.
I recently got an upgrade from my mobile broadband provider (3 UK) that included a ZTE MF112 modem. I found that (unlike the Hauwei modem that preceeded it) this item did not work "out of the box". After a bit of googling around I decided that a good starting place would be to upgrade the OS on my laptop. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway so have just installed Squeeze (the i386 version, on Thinkpad x61). I think it's now pretty close to working "out of the box" but annoyingly isn't quite there. I thought of getting a ZTE modem to work say that usb-modeswitch needs to be used to make it not load as a cdrom. However, it appears to load correctly without any alteration (in fact, adding the /etc/udev/rules.d/zte_eject.rules file I have found described appear to do the reverse and make it load as a storage device - at least an icon for it appears on screen).
lsusb correctly lists it as device 19d2:0031 and identifies the device as a ZTE MF636 (though it says MF112 on the package). Looking at the Network Connections tool there is an entry for 3 mobile that is, afaik, correctly configured. If I click on the network applet on the toolbar, there is a bit of contradiction: towards the top of the drop-down list it reports mobile broadband as not enabled, but further down under the "available" list is an entry for "3 internet". I haven't paid too much attention to the not enabled entry because it also reports the wired network as not managed, so maybe this is just a quirk of network manager. - I know you have to comment out eth0 entries in /etc/network/interfaces to have network manager deal with the interface in Squeeze. There are no entries for the mobile connection in the interfaces file.
If I click on the 3 internet entry the applet goes momentarily into trying to connect mode (the circling dot) but very quickly pops up a Disconnected box, and that's all that ever happens. I note that the light on the modem stays permanently red. On the old Huwei it started green but went blue, and I think I read something about it also changing colour on the ZTE. On the other hand, the Hauwei didn't show up on the network manager list until the light had turned blue, whereas this does seem to be there. It looks as if the problem is something fairly trivial since the device appears to be both recognised and (almost!) correctly configured. How to sort this.
Does LXDE have a repository (source.list) like all the other versions (Gnome, KDE, etc.)?How to add to the LXDE Repository
1: Download Synaptic Package Manager apt-get install synaptic
2: Open Synaptic Package Manager--> Settings--> Repositories
3: Click 'Add'

I really would like to jump into my desktop environment when I start my machine without the need to enter my user name and password. Apparently this is very easy to do. I added the following lines to my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
Code: Select allpam-service=lightdm
pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user=username
autologin-user-timeout=0
session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession
And also added my user to the autologin group
Code: Select allgroupadd -r autologin
gpasswd -a username autologin
As you can imagine, it didn't work. Otherwise I wouldn't be here... I also tried to install Slim and enable autologin adding the following line to the /etc/slim.conf
Code: Select allauto_login = yes
That didn't work either!
Am I missing anything? Enabling autologin in LXDE?
