sudo still works, but every time I run it, it says it's unable to resolve the host. I tried to change stuff in visudo, but there wasn't anything about the host as far as I could tell.
View 9 RepliesIt reads dpkg was interrupted you must run sudo dpkg manually to correct problem. I tried the terminal options and still nothing.. The thing is I am trying to install other packages and it says have to close that one out first.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOccasionally, when startx, I got the error message: "Monitor output has changed" error message ( and sometimes it appear while I am working in X too but rarer). Whenever this happened, my screen changes to "1024x768" resolution when normally it is "1280x800". I click on "Configure", a "Configure Display" windows appear and I have to change the screen to Size"1280x800" back (since it would give me 1024x768"). Besides, the number of error messages will be up to 50s, 60s message. (This "Configure Display" is what you get when you go to "Application->System->"Screen Resize and Rotate" (KRandRTray)) My computer is Toshiba Satellite L500, the distro is Slackware 13.37. It was just installed so all the configuration is out of the box.

I was recently messing around learning chgrp commands, and set my (only) user account to a different group. Now whenever I try to sudo a command, I get 'john is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported' message.I *seem* to have a root account (one is listed in System->admin->users and groups), but I'm almost certain that the password for it would be one of 3 things, and it's none of them.

I am having a problem with Ubuntu 10.04. I was setting up network sharing with Samba. Set up went fine, then I decided to change the hostname.
Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

But it says user is not logged in, apparently the write daemon have to be running in both machines to do this.
And i wanted to use talk, but i should install it in both machines ¿?
The thing is that i have like 10 machines i wanted to send messages to, but i cant find an easy way to do this.
Is there any other way i am missing? or it has to be the "hard" way

Many of mails sent from my mail server that are in Queue;The main reason is deffered by domains like yahoo,aol,etc.but there is one more error that i keep getting and that is Host Unknown,Below is an example from mail log,The catch is,test mail sent on the same email id sent from my personal mail from the same server i.e. url was deliveredHowever,another mail containing client information sent from customercare@mycompanysdomain ended up in queue.

i actually registered here because i'm done with my knowledge of linux, errors which cause my sys to hang and/or reboot randomly after some time. They occur while the system is under heavy cpu, heavy mem-read-write, mediocre mem fill, heavy hdd io (for ~20 seconds every ~5 minutes).
problem background we ordered two identical PCs (specs below), one of them brought those sata errors quoted below from /var/log/messages, the other one runs flawlessly. Same Hardware and Software Configuration. Faulty one brought reallocated sectors right at start, mass seek errors, read errors. 1st try: swap cables, change bios mode ata_piix <-> AHCI. Didn't work. Went away for repair. Stupid Techie did only swap hdd, so problems occured again. Shipping for repair again. Board AND hdd exchanged. no more seek/read errors, no more reallocated sectors. But similar sata problems right after 3 days of previously described workload. Following logs are from after the last repair.

I have set up SSH and redirected the ssh server to listen on another port other than 22 for a bit of added security.
Now in hosts.deny I have:
ALL : ALL
In hosts.allow I have:
SSH : ip_address_of_client
I can no longer connect. I get the message: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host.
When I change hosts.allow to read:
ALL : ip_address_of_client
I can successfully connect the server.
However, I only want to allow SSH access in hosts.allow. What is the correct syntax?
I have tried and failed with each one of these:
SSH : ip_address:port_number
SSH2 : ipaddress
sshfwd-portnumber : ip_address_of_client
I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.

I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

In attempt to update to LMMS 0.4.5, I downloaded & attempted to install : lmms_0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty_i386.deb and got the following error message : Error : Dependency is not satisfiable : lmms-common (=0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty). What went wrong and is there an easier way to update ? Also, should I remove the older version or just install the latest on top of it ?
