I have tried a few times already the following procedures: start a new installation (each time, I create a new VBox VM) with the Fedora 12 DVD iso attached to the DVD drive of the VM. I select the default setting, like US english, US keyboard, local time (GMT +8), standard installation ... etc). The installation process had been smooth to the screen the system asking for a reboot after installing something like 1100+ packages. Then I click the reboot button offered. The VM restarted but each and every time, it came up with the following error message:
Booting from local disk...
FATAL: INT18: BOOT FAILURE
There was no other error message durint the installation process. It would be very much appreciated if some one can tell me what went wrong and how to solve it. I believe even I try again the same way, it will end up with same result. Is it a software or hardware problem? In case software problem, is it Fedora or VirtualBox?

Setup:
1. Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Professional HOST Operating System
2. Oracle VirtualBox 4.0.6r71416 on top of Windows 7
3. Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32-bit GUEST Operating System in VirtualBox
I successfully installed the above configuration on May 15, 2011. I had some difficulty getting the Host-Only VirtualBox Adapter to work. I was forced to make a subtle change to the Windows Registry in order to get the Adapter to work correctly. I was successful. I used the Debian Update Manager to update my installation of Ubuntu. Nothing changed on the Windows 7 side. Now, Windows 7 says that the Host-only adapter is enabled, but I don't have a connection to the Ubuntu OS. I can't use PuTTY or WinSCP. When I invoke ipconfig on the Windows side, 192.168.56.101 is the IPv4 address. When I invoke ifconfig on the Ubuntu side, there isn't anything.

Can't seem to update apt-get. Can anyone help with this? I've attached a screenshot of the output of
Code:
sudo apt-get update After trying this once, I decided to verify that there was an internet connection. I pinged some IP addresses and almost each ping went perfectly. If that can be ruled out, what is the next step?

I have virtualbox installed under ubuntu 8.04 x64. The kernel got updated and since then I have to reboot the computer and choose previous kernel to use virtualbox. The reason is that I can't get a hold of the virtualbox module for 2.6.24-28 generic. When the kernel has been updated in the past I would just go into synaptic and select it, but this time it doesn't show and I've waited a while now... Tried searching for the package to no avail.

Everything seems to work EXCEPT Update Manager.I consistently get Failure message: "Failed to download package files".

Previously on 10.10 "sudo update-grub" took 2-3 seconds.
I upgraded to 11.04 and it now takes 10 - 15 minutes.
Is unity generally much slower than GNOME?

Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.
By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.

I recently tried using iTunes inside a virtual box with Windows 7 to update my iPhone 3GS which involved handing control of this device to the guest OS.My question is whether it's possible to give that control back to my host system (Lucid).I've tried removing USB support from the virtual box device dropdown but that didn't work.Any thoughts? If all else fails I could likely restore using someone else's computer but I'd prefer not to.

I just installed 11.04 32 bit (downloaded today) in Virtualbox (4.0.6), with host 64 bit Win7. I'm trying to get Unity working. I've searched and found references to the fact that the Host graphics card must support 3D, which I believe mine does (nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX). Also found some references to try the following:
After the OS install, I did this:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils
Then rebooted and did this:
killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon && gnome-settings-daemon
I also installed the latest Guest Additions. In the VM settings I have the "3D" tick checked, and have 32M RAM allocated to video. But no Unity shows up, just normal desktop.
Any ideas?

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

A family member has got a windows PC (with a Pentium 4 w/o hardware virtualization support) that keeps winding up infected and crudding up. As I would like to minimize family IT support time, I figured the easiest thing to do was to wipe it, put Linux on it, install XP pro (they don't want a more recent one) in a VirtualBox virtual machine, and take a snapshot. I'd set up a shared drive on the host where they could store all their stuff, so that when it inevitably gets hosed, all I have to do is roll back to the snapshot.
This leaves me with the question - which host distro would be the best choice? I'm looking for three things - ease of maintenance on my part (updates, configuration, etc.; I have a background in slackware, but have some exposure to Ubuntu), minimalism (so that the bulk of the system's resources can be devoted to the VM), and virtualization-readiness (say, so I can have the computer automatically go from power up to virtual machine power up, thereby minimizing the user exposure to the host).
Obviously, I would like it if it has all of the standard tools that will allow me to do remote maintenance, also.
I've looked at Ubuntu server JeOS, and it seems enticing, but I can't seem to find out whether it can be used on a desktop system, i.e., with a GUI, etc.

Recently I've been unable to load web pages, hosted on my Ubuntu Guest in Apache, from my OSX Host. In fact, I can no longer even ping the Guest OS from the Host. In the past, when I did ifconfig on the Guest, I got an IP of 10.0.1.n. Now I'm getting 10.0.2.15--the default NAT Address. The thing is, I didn't change any settings recently. What I did do is run software update for OSX, Ubuntu, and updated VirtBox.
Current Versions:
VirtBox 4.0.8 r71778
Host: OSX 10.6.7
Guest: Ubuntu 11.04
why I can no longer access my Guest OS from my Host? I spent hours on this last night, to no avail. What would cause the Guest IP to change from 10.0.1.n to 10.0.2.15? As I say, I manually made no config changes.

pretty comfortable at the command line and in kde. found 2 'supplementary kernel drivers' for virtualbox at slackbuild (thank you heinz!). followed the how-to at slackbuild and built and installed both packages, but additions weren't working. (i thought they were standalone) noticed the 'supplemental' in their description, and so installed the guest additions for linux from vbox site. additions still not working. at this point i start restarting my slackware vm, and redoing everything in various sequences. finally, additions work! but i'm not sure why! critical pieces and sequence for getting guest additions working once i have slackware installed?
