Ubuntu Servers :: Apache/PHP Set Root Directory Of Website?

Nov 27, 2010

In my website, I'm putting shared files in a "/global" folder. Both "styles.css" and "library.php" are in this global folder. HTML code seems to be working ok - the following bit works great to pick up a style sheet:

Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/global/styles.css" /> However PHP does not seem to understand my root directory. Using the following does not work:
Code:
include_once("/global/library.php");

I receive a "failed to open stream: No such file or directory" error.Spelling out the entire full path works, like so:

Code:
include_once("/srv/www/mysite/global/library.php");

But this type of code is no good as I may change servers in the future. I have my "DocumentRoot" set correctly in my sites-available file. It seems as if PHP is ignoring it. Is there a config file someplace (htaccess? Local php.ini?) where I should update my root directory for this site only? Or am I following bad form and there's a better way to do this? Relative paths don't seem like the answer here though...

Ubuntu :: 403 Error After Changing Apache Document Root

Sep 19, 2010

I've had apache installed for a couple of years with no problem but this morning I thought I would change the apache document root to my secondary disk so that my WAMP setup in my Windows partition and LAMP could share the same files. I've edited the etc/apache2/sites-available file to point it to the new location of my document root but I am getting a 403 - forbidden "You don't have permission to access / on this server." error when I try to load files through the browser. I'm not sure if this is a permissions issue or the way I've edited the sites-available config.

Here is the new sites available config:
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
DocumentRoot /media/Data/webroot
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks

Fedora Servers :: 14 Apache Error 403?

Dec 24, 2010

I moved from F12 to F14, I've installed using yum Apache, MySql, php, phpMyAdmin. That all works fine, I've made index.php with phpinfo() function and if it is in /var/www/html/ it opens in web browser. I extracted daloradius-0.9-8 in /var/www/hmtl/daloradius folder changed ownership to apache:apache set alias to myradius. When I point web browser to localhost/myradius I get error 403, forbidden. I moved index.php with phpinfo() to daloradius (overwriting old index.php) and same stuff happens. Error 403. What am I doing wrong?

Fedora Servers :: Apache 403 Forbidden Error On Symlinks

Aug 12, 2011

the hard drive on my web server died so I replaced it and installed Fedora 15. I have been installing the OS on a small drive and then mounting other drive(s) for storage and did the same thing here. The problem is that I cannot get Apache to follow symlinks. Apache is partially working, it will serve my index.html page in the web page root directory and I made another directory called webtest and put some files in, and that worked fine. I made a symlink from the root directory to a folder on the mounted drive but when I try to access it, it gives me the old 403 Forbidden error. I also made a similar link in the webtest directory, I can view the other files in that directory but it does not show the link - also, trying to force it by typing the full path in the browser gives the same 403 error.

I have checked the permissions and SELinux types (using ls -Z) and they seem to be fine and I cannot find any .htaccess files. All the files on the mounted drive are owned by www:www but I also tried setting the user and group to www in httpd.conf and it still gave the same issue, so I changed them back to apache. I've been reading posts and sites on this for hours now and I'm still lost. I can post results of log files if they are of any use, I just wasn't sure what to post because it is somewhat working.

Security :: Root Password Cannot Be Changed

Jan 20, 2011

Protect against root password change[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]I have recently had to force a change of the root password on a linux box I was running. It was a test system which I had not used in a while, so I forgot the root password (not so smart).Anyway, I found that it was amazingly easy to reset the root password. Here is a straight forward article on how to do it.URL...

My question is: how can you protect against this? I see this as a security hole.I understand that the user must have physical access to the computer, but if I want to lock the system down so you cannot easily enter single user mode or the root password cannot be changed.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Login After File Owner Changed From Root To User

Mar 21, 2011

I used to use the root account for everything for more than a year then I moved to a user account for security reasons but almost all files had root as owner so I could not go 5 minutes without having to change to root and then change the owner of a file to my username to make it usable. I got fed up with this so I just changed the owner of every file on the system to my username instead of root.

command chown -R myusername * in the base directory /

Everything was fine until I restarted and the login screen became non functional and I got 2 error messages related to xsession and gnome errors. I think this is because the login screen might have its own user account and it cant access the files for the login process because it is owned by myusername. So my question is what is the user-name of the login account and what folders/files need to have their owner changed so the login process can work? I'm on 10.04 lucid.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup The MYSQL Server - Error: 'Access Denied For User 'root'@'localhost' (using Password: NO)'

Mar 26, 2010

I set up a servber on my local machine, & also PHp - Both working fine.I'm trying to load up MYSQL i have installed it, & *can* start/stop the server. however if I do anything else with it, I get this error :-

Quote:

root@gordon-desktop:~# sudo mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password MYPASSWORD
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

Query :-

1) How do I know MYSQL is actually active ? (apart from the message it says that its statrted (or stopped).

2) Is there a way to

a) Find out the usernames that are recorded on the MYSQL server ?
b) set / RESET the 'root' username (I know MYSQL root user is different to PC root user)
c) anything else I can do on the PHP / website code to see if MYSQL is working

(as yet, no tables / databases etc have been set up - as I can't get past this error message - I get the same error when setting up a database.)

Ps I did allow my usermname (when logged in to ubuntu) to edit / create files in the /usr/www/ directory (but it is still OWNED by 'root' - that directory)

Hardware :: SATA Error -> Sys Hard Reboot On Suse 11.3. Board + Hdd Changed - Error

Feb 1, 2011

i actually registered here because i'm done with my knowledge of linux, errors which cause my sys to hang and/or reboot randomly after some time. They occur while the system is under heavy cpu, heavy mem-read-write, mediocre mem fill, heavy hdd io (for ~20 seconds every ~5 minutes).

problem background we ordered two identical PCs (specs below), one of them brought those sata errors quoted below from /var/log/messages, the other one runs flawlessly. Same Hardware and Software Configuration. Faulty one brought reallocated sectors right at start, mass seek errors, read errors. 1st try: swap cables, change bios mode ata_piix <-> AHCI. Didn't work. Went away for repair. Stupid Techie did only swap hdd, so problems occured again. Shipping for repair again. Board AND hdd exchanged. no more seek/read errors, no more reallocated sectors. But similar sata problems right after 3 days of previously described workload. Following logs are from after the last repair.

Ubuntu Servers :: Permissions For A Log File Being Changed?

Feb 23, 2010

I have a recently setup my first linux server (hardy) and am having problems with the permissions for a log file being changed. I believe this is caused by syslogd, but am not sure how to correct it. Bacula will report it is unable to start a backup because it is unable to open the log file (/var/lib/bacula/log) "permission denied". After changing the owner from syslog to bacula, the backup will resume. However, the following day I encounter the same problem because the owner of the log has been changed back to syslog.I see where the permissions for logs are altered in sysklogd, but I am not certain how to make bacula exempt or if this is the right approach.

Ubuntu Servers :: Changed Group But Can't See The Difference

Jan 19, 2011

I have set up Ubuntu 10.04 and am running it on a VPS. I have everything the way I want it but I have encountered a problem. When I created my user, I did this:

adduser myname

that worked fine, it also assigned me to group called myname, which isn't what i wanted. so i tried to change my group to staff with the following:

sudo usermod -g staff myname

it works fine and i can verify my new group by:

groups myname

and get:

staff

but...now here come the bit I don't understand, when I make a new file/folder and then look at their ownership it is the old group (ie. myname). is this right? shouldn't the ownership of the file now be myname staff? not myname myname.

this is what i did to create a new file, while logged in under myname:

touch a
mkdir da
ls -al
