Ubuntu :: Arised After VirtualBox Installation In Karmik?

Apr 15, 2010

I have installed VirtualBox via virtualbox-ose package and it works fine (also installed needed addons), but i can't enable USB on it. I have karmik release installed, but manual at[url].... I discover 2 problems on my system:

1. It does not have /proc/bus/usb directory and when i try to mkdir it:

Code:
baleks@BAleks-netbook:~$ LANG=C sudo mkdir /proc/bus/usb
mkdir: cannot create directory `/proc/bus/usb': No such file or directory
baleks@BAleks-netbook:~$ ls /proc/bus
input pci

so my entry in fstab to mount /proc/bus/usb not works. Moreover, when i trying to mount that in /dev/bus/usb (althought this directory already exist and with files) mount tells me: mount: unknown filesystem type 'usbfs'

2. virtualbox-ose package does not created user group vboxusers (or any like that) in /etc/group, even after reinstallation of the package. 1 and 2 is two steps to get USB work in VirtualBox, and i don't know what to do.. Attempts to google this problems almost always gets me to the posts/manuals related to older verions of ubuntu, but i have karmik..

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgradeing From 9.04 To Karmik 9.10 All I Get Is A Shall Prompt?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm quite a newbie, and that being terse haven't ever been in the list of my virtues. Still, I tried so many things, that this post couldn't possibly be shorter then it is.Yesterday I upgraded my Kubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10 using adept. During upgrade I accepted everything that was offered including (one)new configuration file for I don't know what. After reboot I still had grub1, after trying regular boot system froze with error message that usplash process doesn't exist or so; briefly, only recovery mode worked properly. I think I entered clean option accidentally, if not, I haven't done anything special, yet after n-th reboot usplash problem disappeared, but I had another freezing screen, with something like:

Quote:
mount: proc already mounted on /proc
mount: UUID=d6163745-e30e-4c00-b158-66e46d40b1a8 already mounted on /home
mount: /dev/scd0 already mounted on /media/cdrom0[code]....

plus it said it cannot mount everything from fstab. Problem was partition from another computer that was smbfs, which is truly not reachable right now. Someone said it's problem with mountall.I tried solutions I found here:

1. provided by @kentaur

mount -o remount,rw /
sudo dpkg --configure -a[code].....

PS. Isn't ubuntu suppose to resolve dependencies automatically?

Ubuntu :: After Upgradeing From 9.04 To Karmik 9.10 All Get Is A Shall Prompt?

Mar 23, 2010

I should mention that I'm quite a newbie, and that being terse haven't ever been in the list of my virtues. Still, I did so many things today, that this post couldn't possibly be shorter then it is. Yesterday I finally upgraded my Kubuntu from 9.04 to 9.10 in adept.

[Code]...

I tried this twice then I tried one more thing I (think I)saw in the next few lines that are not displayed here apt-get -f upgrade. It ended up with recovery mode not working properly(only resume was possible), and regular boot ending in shell prompt. When I commanded startx from root kde started my last session(with some error messages immediately covered with firefox). Mouse and keyboard were dead! Hard reset, logging to my home and startx led me to karmik kde login menager, and again that was dead end, because keyboard and mouse were dead!

Fedora Installation :: VirtualBox 13 Guest: Live CD Installation Failure

Aug 3, 2010

Running VirtualBox 3.2.6 under some host OS (should be irrelevant which one, right?), I created a machine, intending to install Fedora 13 on it. Got the Fedora 13 Live CD iso image, and an 8.6 GB virtual hard drive, completely blank. I set the machine to boot off the Live CD image. The Live CD boots nicely and I get to its desktop. I open "Install to Hard Drive"...and nothing happens. No error message, zip, nada. Inspection of the system shows a series of odd file systems, but I have no clue what they are for and whether they're usable or not.

The sticky [URL] mentions that the blank virtual hard disk should be partitioned and formatted beforehand...So I did, using the Live CD's Disk Utility (Applications: System Tools: Disk Utility). Although the sticky states the small /boot partition should be ext2 or ext3, the Live CD installer proposes to reformat it as ext4. Shouldn't we have formatted it as ext4 right away, then? Also, the installer set the /boot partition's size to 524 MB, not 200 MB as recommended by the sticky.

OBSERVATION: This was not easy because VirtualBox sets the display to 800x600 at most, and the Disk Utility spills beyond those confines WITHOUT PROVIDING SLIDERS. It was sheer luck that the required buttons (create partition, format partition) were barely reachable (at the bottom edge of the screen). This is a serious problem, because increasing the VirtualBox display size can only be done *after* installation (see for instance[URL] - since this guest addition requires rebooting the guest OS, it probably won't stick to the Live CD).

Once those two partitions are prepared and the virtual machine rebooted, "Install to Hard Drive" works as expected.

OBSERVATION: It is absolutely inexcusable that the Live CD installer (Anaconda?) does not propose to do this partitioning and formatting for the user. It is even more inexcusable that it should fail without giving any feedback whatsoever to the user.

Aside: VirtualBox's guest additions does not work correctly (for 3.2.6 anyway). The Devices: Install Guest Additions menu merely mounts a CD image VBOXADDITIONS_3.2.6_63112) without any feedback (expected feedback because the menu ends with an ellipsis). The CD, once opened, has an Open Autorun Prompt button...which fails to do anything. Manually running autorun.sh also fails. I had to manually invoke VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run from a terminal to get anywhere. Even then I was unable to go higher than 1024x768.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Virtualbox From 3.0.12 To 3.1.4

Mar 25, 2010

I'm currently using the PUEL version of Virtualbox 3.0.12 and whenever I open it, it prompts me to update - see screengrab.

Clicking that link and choosing to open it via the package installer (see screengrab) results in the error screen below - another screengrab.

I then realised the deb file was named Jaunty, so went to the Vbox website to download the Karmic file.

Running that via package installer produces the same error - Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-3.0'

Do I need to remove the old version first? If so, how do I do that (given that this is the PUEL version not the open-source version) and will my existing virtual machines (I've got WinXP and ChromeOS) be safe and still work afterwards?

My reason for wanting to upgrade is to virtually try Ubuntu 10.4 which I just cannot get to run or install in Vbox (either from a CD or from the iso image)

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Make Virtualbox Work In 10.04

May 21, 2010

I cannot make Virtualbox work in Ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04). I tried both to install Virtualbox OSE from Package Manager and Virtualbox 3.2 downloaded from the Virtualbox site (32 bits version, as my OS). Installation is OK, but when I try to run it, I get an error message:

Error in home. virtualbox.xml (line3) cannot handle settings version 1.2-linux. Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (080004005). Virtualbox would be good because it allows running some Windows applications or games. Wine seems useless, only a couple of applications run in Wine and practically no games. It keeps warning me about DirectX etc. I can't understand why Wine exists at all.

I have tried to add it to shared folders in Virtual box, but no go. I can , however, access my USB drives ok, after I found out about the Vbox user permissions. But what I do notice is that it seems Ubuntu unmounts the USB drive as soon as Vbox "mounts" it. Is there no way to have these drives mounted simultaneously on both platforms ?

Ubuntu Installation :: On Raid 0 - Win7 In VirtualBox ?

Mar 28, 2011

I'm waiting on a 2TB drive to come in so I can repurpose my gaming rig for Ubuntu. (Ok, its still going to be a gaming rig but I want to do 90% of my work/gaming in Linux) I'm thinking that rather than dual-booting I want to run the windows side of the house from a VM via Virtualbox.

Ubuntu runs fine with my hardware atm (have 10.10 installed on a secondary sata drive) and recognizes the RAID array that windows is currently installed on (gigabyte 870A-UD3 motherboard, I think Ubuntu's using fakeRAID to mount and view the drive, not very knowledgeable on raid and had the system built for me, but I know I'm using the gigabyte on-chip bios configuration for the raid)

I'd like to know:

1) if anyone knows of a good guide for dealing with this particular RAID controller beyond my owner's manual. (I read that 10.10 fakeRAID pretty much sets itself up)

2) should my win7 partition for the VM (I'd like it to be a dedicated partition so that I can boot into it if I have to do something in windows that Virtualbox can't handle) be on the Raid Array or the 2TB WD Caviar Green (low performance/power consumption drive)?

3. since I have a 2tb raid 0 array and a 2tb drive coming in, can I setup raid to mirror the contents of the 2 raid 0 drives onto the WD Caviar drive or do they all 3 have to be identical drives. (I think the other 2 are 1TB WD Caviar Black drives)

4. Any particular advice on partitioning? I was just thinking of /, /home and swap being separate on the raid but otherwise leaving the standalone drive as one big partition or splitting between windows partition and an otherwise large storage space.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Audio In VirtualBox After Upgrade To 11.04?

May 5, 2011

I just upgraded to 11.04, and apart from an initial freakout because I didn't realize why all my settings were borked*, I haven't had any difficulties... until today. I ran my virtual WinXP machine (VirtualBox) to watch some streaming Netflix, and the sound didn't work. Sound still works under Ubuntu just fine. No idea why it didn't survive in my virtual machine.

I noticed when I started that it said there was an upgrade for the VirtualBox software, so I did that, but that didn't fix it either. I'm using PusleAudio for the Host Driver and ICH AC97 for the audio controller on my virtual XP machine. These worked before the upgrade, now... not so much. I tried switching the driver to ALSA and the controller to SoundBlaster 16 (and other different available combos, etc), to no avail.

* It turns out that crap pile, Unity, did away with all my nice custom panel layouts and configs and replaced them with something ugly, unwanted, and non-intuitive. I'm using "Ubuntu Classic" now because Unity is horrible.
