Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Update The Virtualbox
Jul 19, 2010
I have virtualbox installed under ubuntu 8.04 x64. The kernel got updated and since then I have to reboot the computer and choose previous kernel to use virtualbox. The reason is that I can't get a hold of the virtualbox module for 2.6.24-28 generic. When the kernel has been updated in the past I would just go into synaptic and select it, but this time it doesn't show and I've waited a while now... Tried searching for the package to no avail.
I am running Fedora 12 on an Intel Core 2 Duo system. I ran a software update which installed a new kernel (2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686.PAE) along with many other things. I am now unable to run VirtualBox which I had installed and running successfully before the update. I tried removing and reinstalling VirtualBox from YUMEX, and rebooting. This did not help. When I launch VirtualBox from a terminal, it produces the following output:
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: VBoxVMM.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'm not sure what it is complaining about. The files VirtualBox.so and VBoxVMM.so both exist in the /usr/lib/virtualbox directory.
What can be done to get VirtualBox working again on this system?
On a Xp host I installed last version of VirtualBox and I created a 9.10 Ubuntu 'guest'.While I can surf the net, I cant 'sudo apt-get update' nor do a 'reload' from 'Synaptic Package Manager'.

Just installed 10.10 under Oracle VM VirtualBox and then installed VBOX additions to clear up monitor issues. Mozilla Firefox works and so does Evolution mail client (needs work though). Everything seems to work EXCEPT Update Manager.I consistently get Failure message: "Failed to download package files".
I have installed both 32 and 64 bit versions of Ubuntu 11.04 in VirtualBox 4.0.6 and have installed the VBox Additions. When I try to add new software or update software I get a package operation failed error.
installArchives() failed: Setting up tzdata (2011g-0ubuntu0.11.04) ... Use of uninitialized value $reply in scalar chomp at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Passthrough.pm line 66.[code]....
I have used the same install media to install Ubuntu on a stand alone system and it works fine.
If I run Vista through VirtualBoxOSE (on Natty) will I be able to update my MS Zune? Short replies welcome, just want to know if it's worth the trouble
i always run updates if i get prompted about it... this time i ran a couple or so updates and software updates and restarted, i realise my VirtualBox and Wine isn't running at all... i click on the icons but nothing fires up.. all my programs on Wine seem to fall under the same issue...
how do i view all the latest updates i just installed?
I'm uncertain if this is the correct forum to ask this question. Please redirect me to the correct forum if necessary. I am attempting to install MS Windows 7 as a guest in VirtualBox inside Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. on a ZaReason Strata 3660 with 4GB of RAM and adequate memory. The machine is correctly partitioned for this event. I am using the Ubuntu Walk Through as a guide: [URl].. All was going fine until VirtualBox asked for the .iso image from the MS cd 'UDF Volume'. There appears to be no .iso file in the UDF Volume.
every time i try to update my computer i get this message administrator@desktop:~$ sudo aptitude upgrade W: The "upgrade" command is deprecated; use "safe-upgrade" instead. I tried to install VirtualBox 32 bit on my 64bit Fedora11 OS. I took the 32 bit version as I want to run a 32bit software. I collected all information I could get from other forums. That's what I did: I downloaded and installed [URL]
Now I got stucked with the error Qt WARNING: QGtkStyle was unable to detect the current GTK+ theme. I searched for qt or qgtkstyle on my system and found files containing both but don't know what to do here.
after initating the update and i enter my pass word, update stops and an error box comes up stating that it is unable to update because there is more than one synaptic manager running, i have restarted and get the same results, and to my knowledge there is nothing else running in the background.
I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:
[code]...
When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?
I tried to update my ubuntu from 8.04 to 10.04. Because I couldn't find the update in the update manager I started the update with the following:
<Alt> <F2> update-manager --devel-release
After checking for packages to update I first updated all the programms listed in the update manager. After this I started the update of the OS. After some checks the download of the new files started. It took appr. 2 hours. After this I got he message about some applications, which are no longer supported. So far no problems. Than I started the update of the system. After some further preparartions the update stopps with the following error message:
Die Aktualisierungen konnten nicht installiert werden Fehler beim Anwenden 'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend jre for openoffice.org-writer2latex, probably a dependency cyle.' Ursprnglicher Systemzustand wird wiederhergestellt
I tried a restart of the update as well as a rebboot of the system and restart of the update. Both failed with the same error.
My system:
AMD64 (ubuntu 32 bit version) Grub with 'Ubuntu' and Windows XP
For me the only way to get Ubuntu 10.04 running seems to install it from CD/DVD.
today when i updated my ubuntu 9.10 it was about 44mb update and update manager was not able to download 13mb of files i clicked continue anyway. after that i shut down my pc and when i restarted it my old black and ordinary GRUB was gone and there was one with Debian symbol and blue background and everything and when i selected any OS ( i have 3 os 1 on my 80GB hard disk which is ubuntu and other 2 are debian and windows XP which are on 20GB hard disk) and it said
Just did an update to 9.1 & now am unable to boot to ubuntu, windows7 still boots ok. Didnt pay much attention to the update but did notice there were a lot of cups files. Booting to ubuntu get something about using a tab & then getting a list of commands one can do. Tried boot got 'no kernel' tried exit & got a pc reboot which let me back to the tab msg.
I've been having problems with the Update Manager ever since it tried to install an update for firefox a few days ago. I'm on Hardy, and I tried to completely remove the firefox package using Synaptic, and re-installing it, and I always get the same error. Maybe it might have something to do with ubuntuzilla? I know I used that a while back to install Firefox 3.5/3.6, since the only one I was getting from the package manager was 3.0. Anyway, here is the error:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_3.6.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~mfs~hardy2_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/firefox', which is also in package firefox-mozilla-build
My gtk-gnutella 0.96.6 apparently has become "ancient" and I cannot seem to find anything relevant inline. Would there be one line terminal command to update it? (I've never build something from files only)
Code: ibo@ibo-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get update gtk-gnutella [sudo] password for ibo: E: The update command takes no arguments ibo@ibo-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get gtk-gnutella E: Invalid operation gtk-gnutella ibo@ibo-laptop:~$
Every time I try to do update or install a new software, it stops me, I tried to do update through the terminal but it didn't work, giving this error message : E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
This morning my update manager came up so I clicked to update. About halfway through the update an error message popped up & said to restart my system. I restarted my system and now have a black screen with the following message:
mountall: symbol lookup error: mountall: undefined symbol: udev_monitor_filter_a
dd_match_subsystem_devtype
init: mountall main process (344) terminated with status 127
I read around earlier & tried to use a Ubuntu disk and reboot but I have the same error.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron computer, it's just over a year old. I keep up with all the updates but unfortunately cannot say for sure which updates were taking place because I just hit the update box.
after alot of work with my system, I've gotten most of it working It's a Toshiba C655-S5049 with a Atheros AR9285 Wireless card, so lots of fun getting that to work, anyway I'm trying to update my system, and it wont update, if I try update manager it won't do it because it's dealing with restricted drivers, and if I try in terminal I get E: Unable to locate package updateAnyway, any suggestions? I've been trying to work this out, and it's getting annoying. The key Drivers that I'm also looking for are, Video:Intel 4500M HD Integrated with Dynamic Sharing Audio:IntelAudio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) Also, does anyone happen to know how well battlefield 2 will run in wine? it ran pretty good on windows, just wondering how it will do in ubuntu.
I can't seem to figure out what's going on here. Whenever I use synaptic to attempt to add/remove anything I receive the following error: (Reading database... 65%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: files list file for package 'dnsmasq-base' is missing final newline E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) A package failed to install.
I wanted to try out the new Ubuntu 10.04, but since I don't have any CD's available I thought I could use my 9.10 CD and upgrade from it.
1. Installed 9.10 on the entire disk. 2. Went to update manager(?) and clicked the button to upgrade to 10.04 3. It successfully downloaded all the files. 4. When installing the new files it suddenly said that it failed to update, and it stopped. Then I went to do a hardware test, but none of the menus were working.
I had to do a manual shutdown, and reboot the computer. This time I was met with an error "Unable to mount root fs".
I figured the upgrade was the problem, so I reinstalled 9.10 to try without upgrading. 1. Reinstalled 9.10 on the entire disk. 2. Went to update manager(?) and started the normal update for 9.10 so the system would be up-to-date. 3. Same thing happened now, it fails to update and it makes my computer useless.
I've already checked my hardware for errors, can't find any. I've checked the CD for errors, can't find any. I had 9.04 on the same computer a few weeks ago, and it was rock-solid. Worked like a dream. I'm using Win7 now though.
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
