Ubuntu Installation :: 64bit VirtualBox XP Not Starting.?
Oct 22, 2010
First off I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, if you would like a complete discription of my hardware you can find my lshw > [URL]I seem to have broken my VirtualBox installation, I went from VirtualBox OSE to VirtualBox 3.2 (again 64bit version downloaded from virtualbox.org the about says version 3.2.10 r66523) I tried apt-get purging 3.2 and going back to OSE but it gives me the same error I started getting when I tried installing 3.2 so I have decided to install that again and try and trouble shoot the problem.I get two error windows that pop up when I try and start my windows xp virtualbox, the first says:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-190The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.nd the second says:Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Sierra Designs - XP.The virtual machine 'Sierra*Designs*-*XP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1.etails:

If I start my VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.04 it crashes 50% of the time... The whole system hangs, even the music keeps playing the last 2 seconds over and over... I can't find useful information in the Log File Viewer. I'm using seperate X screens, maybe it has something to do with that?

So after a series of uninstalling and reinstalling VirtualBox to get the updated version, I was able to get it installed and working but it seemed to be crashing my computer as everytime i walked away for 10 minutes and came back, it would be at the login screen. It never did it while I was on it though so I never saw any errors. Now after a couple days of that... Whenever I start it I get an error:
Failed to create VirtualBox COM object
The application will now terminate.
Could not load the settings file '/home/user/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'

I have a strange problem with some applications in 10.10. This applies so far to virtualbox and skype. When I try to start them, nothing happens. Virtualbox just flickers the edge of the screen. Virtualbox has worked before, and i'm reluctant to delete it as I have another machine installed. Skype has never worked, and even when I have reinstalled, the same happens.

I don't exactly when this started, but I hadn't booted my mythbuntu box for a while. When I boot it now, it hangs after grub at 'Starting Up...'. I was running 9.10 64bit, with 4GB Ram installed on an AMD64 3700+ ASUS A8N5X mobo. How can I resolve this? Can I modify boot options by hitting the Esc key before grub? What options should I use? I made no changes myself, it just happened on the next reboot. I hope that I won't have to burn a livecd. I only say that because the only machine that I have with a decent burner is my 9.10 box.

I download "VirtualBox-3.1.2-56127-Linux_amd64.run" and installed it, and got a messages like this " virtualbox have been installed successfully in my system", but when I run virtualbox, I've been told "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" something like that. And I run virtualbox in terminal, got this:
Warning: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.29.6) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
I run "/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv start" as a root, got messages like this :
Starting VirtualBox kernel module ...failed!
(modprobe vboxdrv failed.)

I have installed VirtualBox as per the instructions on this site, and the kernel module compiled without problem, however when I start it, it causes the user to logout!
I am using the nvidia module from the ATrpms repo if that has any bearing on the problem.
Has anyone else seen this issue?
Details:
CentOS 5.5 x86_64 running on a Dell Studio XPS 435MT with i7 920 and 6GB of RAM
VirtualBox 4.0.2 from virtualbox repo.
nvidia driver 260.

I have done a fresh text-only installation of Fedora 10 on a Dell Dimension E521 for the purpose of setting up a server. After installation I ran yum update to bring the system up to date. After the update, I rebooted the computer, but the boot process froze. I recycled power and pressed "I" after the Dell BIOS screen and the GRUB bootloader appeared. I selected the most current version, edited the kernel line by deleting "rhgb quiet" and replacing it with "3." After making this change, I continued with the boot and the computer stopped at "Starting udev:" I have two fedora 10 revisions showing in the GRUB bootloader, the original installation and the update after running yum.
I repeatedly tried rebooting both versions and, after about 30 attempts, the computer finished booting and got me to the command prompt. Reading through the forums indicated there might be some issue with my nVidia GeForce 6150 onboard video and fedora 10. So, when I got to the command prompt, I followed the instructions in the forums [URL] to load the rpmfusion drivers. This appeared to be successful and when I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appeared to be correct for the new nVidia drivers. After loading these new drivers I tried rebooting. Unfortunately, I have been trying now over and over to get back to the command prompt, but simply can't get past "Starting udev."

I have `enable serial port` ticked, port number set to com1, port mode set to host device and port/file path set to /dev/ttyS0. I have done hours of searching and this is the best i have come up with so far. My question is this: How do i give permission for my guest os to use the serial port?

Today is two out of three boot messages fixed. Working on the third one now, and that relates to virtual machines. The whole Virtual machine thing is new to me. Never used it, but I'd like to start. Therefore, I am no longer willing to just ignore this. The error message during boot is this:

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600

- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:

I tried to install from USB stick and from CD but same error at the same point! It fails just befere it starts to ask your locations etc...
There must be something totally wrong on installer. Checksums are ok etc...
Errors seen with CD and USB stick installation: Pop up: "Istalltion failed The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."
On command line I can see following error message on CD:

Running VirtualBox 3.2.6 under some host OS (should be irrelevant which one, right?), I created a machine, intending to install Fedora 13 on it. Got the Fedora 13 Live CD iso image, and an 8.6 GB virtual hard drive, completely blank. I set the machine to boot off the Live CD image. The Live CD boots nicely and I get to its desktop. I open "Install to Hard Drive"...and nothing happens. No error message, zip, nada. Inspection of the system shows a series of odd file systems, but I have no clue what they are for and whether they're usable or not.
The sticky [URL] mentions that the blank virtual hard disk should be partitioned and formatted beforehand...So I did, using the Live CD's Disk Utility (Applications: System Tools: Disk Utility). Although the sticky states the small /boot partition should be ext2 or ext3, the Live CD installer proposes to reformat it as ext4. Shouldn't we have formatted it as ext4 right away, then? Also, the installer set the /boot partition's size to 524 MB, not 200 MB as recommended by the sticky.
OBSERVATION: This was not easy because VirtualBox sets the display to 800x600 at most, and the Disk Utility spills beyond those confines WITHOUT PROVIDING SLIDERS. It was sheer luck that the required buttons (create partition, format partition) were barely reachable (at the bottom edge of the screen). This is a serious problem, because increasing the VirtualBox display size can only be done *after* installation (see for instance[URL] - since this guest addition requires rebooting the guest OS, it probably won't stick to the Live CD).
Once those two partitions are prepared and the virtual machine rebooted, "Install to Hard Drive" works as expected.
OBSERVATION: It is absolutely inexcusable that the Live CD installer (Anaconda?) does not propose to do this partitioning and formatting for the user. It is even more inexcusable that it should fail without giving any feedback whatsoever to the user.
Aside: VirtualBox's guest additions does not work correctly (for 3.2.6 anyway). The Devices: Install Guest Additions menu merely mounts a CD image VBOXADDITIONS_3.2.6_63112) without any feedback (expected feedback because the menu ends with an ellipsis). The CD, once opened, has an Open Autorun Prompt button...which fails to do anything. Manually running autorun.sh also fails. I had to manually invoke VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run from a terminal to get anywhere. Even then I was unable to go higher than 1024x768.

I'd like to install Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit, over my Ubuntu 10.04 Amd64.
When I insert the live CD (that is working, I've used it yesterday to
install on my desktop at work),
the Boot from CD is skipped (but is configured properly
in the BIOS, in fact when I installed the 64bit version I had no trouble
at all) and the existing OS is loaded instead.
It seems to me to read some error related with the device (but
is fast and can't be sure what the message says).
After Ubuntu has been loaded, I can read and explore the CD.
I'd like to know how to solve this issue, any advice?
I'd want to boot from cd again, but if you know how to start
live installation when Ubuntu is already running, may you please let me know?

I'm currently using the PUEL version of Virtualbox 3.0.12 and whenever I open it, it prompts me to update - see screengrab.
Clicking that link and choosing to open it via the package installer (see screengrab) results in the error screen below - another screengrab.
I then realised the deb file was named Jaunty, so went to the Vbox website to download the Karmic file.
Running that via package installer produces the same error - Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-3.0'
Do I need to remove the old version first? If so, how do I do that (given that this is the PUEL version not the open-source version) and will my existing virtual machines (I've got WinXP and ChromeOS) be safe and still work afterwards?
My reason for wanting to upgrade is to virtually try Ubuntu 10.4 which I just cannot get to run or install in Vbox (either from a CD or from the iso image)

Observed on two host systems both with openSUSE 11.3 32 bit using ext4: When a big files, in this case a 1.2 GB and a 1.7 GB is copied from DVD, usb harddrive or shared folder into a Windows 7 32 bit guest system, the copied file is corrupted. The md5sum has changed and until the guest system has been rebooted successive md5sum tests on the same file comes up with various results... After a reboot md5sum tests show consistent results, but a sum different from the original file.

Today I've upgraded my Maverick installation to Natty using the "do-release-upgrade" command. The upgrade completed successfully according to the tool, but after I rebooted my system and chose "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic" in GRUB my screen went black showing an blinking underscore and rebooted after approx. five seconds.
When I entered the Safe Boot environment the last thing my system did before rebooting was attaching the SCSI devices but didn't show any error message.
Same with (successful) clean installation from Desktop-CD and Alternate-CD on a clean HDD.
After I upgraded I still had access to the "Previous Linux Versions" option in Grub, but when I started the Maverick kernel my system displayed a blinking underscore for about 30 minutes - until I shut it off. In the Safe Boot environment of the old kernel the "Failsafe X" option resulted in the blinking underscore again.
This happens with the final version, but also happened with the alpha and beta versions.
Ubuntu is the only OS on my PC.
I only tried this with the GNOME version of Ubuntu, but will try to use Xubuntu now.

Running the latest wubi.exe on Windows 7 x64.It creates a %temp%/pylXXX.tmp.exe file (with wubi logo) that it removes after ~1 second. It creates a %temp%/pylXXX.tmp folder wich is empty and that is not removed.Running in XP compatibility doesn't help, removing generated files don't work either. The wubi process dies quite quick and after it gets ~4000kB memory usage.I don't find any log files
