Ubuntu :: Suspend Button (fn+f5) On Hp Pavilion Dv2000 Laptop Not Functioning

Apr 20, 2011

I have a problem with the suspend button (fn+f5) on my hp pavilion dv2000 laptop. It is working but only after an intervention. So, every I boot up my system the short-cut/button is not functioning. In order to make it work I have to open the Power Management Preferences and close them. I don't even need to change anything there. Now the button will be working just fine until the next restart. It's pretty annoying to visit the Power Management after each restart, isn't it. Any ideas how could I fix this?

Debian :: Power Button On Keyboard Not Functioning

I recently upgraded to Jessie and am using the LXDE desktop. I like using the keyboard power button to shutdown the system but it does not work. I looked at /etc/acpi and everything appears okay to my untrained eyes, but there is obviously something not working correctly. Do I need to edit some config file or install some code in order to use the power button for shutdown ? When I look at Services Settings I see that acpid power management is selected.

Fedora :: F12 On HP Pavilion Laptop

Mar 21, 2010

Atlast after a long time thinking and concerns I made it ... installed F12 on HP Pavilion using a LIVE CD ... I got a AMD turion 64 X2 with a NVIDIA graphics card (7200M this is what it says in VISTA) I am more than satisfied with F12 on my HP ... this is first time I am using Linux on LAPTOP and my previous usage is purely on desktops and have some good touch with F9 and still continuing with it. I have few doubts At present I guess I am using Nouveau drivers for my Nvidia graphics card. But I hear from communities people complaining of HIGH TEMPERATURES as open source drivers for NVIDIA are not good enough (NVIDIA doesnt release much info on them). So should I change my NVIDIA drivers to proprietary one? Any tips or gnome settings on LAPTOPS to best utilize all the resources without burning out things?

Ubuntu :: HP Pavilion Laptop Freezing After Login

Dec 26, 2010

My HP Pavilion laptop (3GB RAM, 1.8GHz, Intel Core2 Duo, Integrated graphics) has been freezing almost every single time I log in. This used to happen occasionally. Recently I had to clear my whole drive and reinstall Ubuntu (now using maverick) because it stopped working. Now when I log in and it freezes the only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've probably done this way too many times by now and it can't be good for the computer.

To get around this I do the following: Safe mode works perfectly fine and I use it to disable compiz. Then I log back out and log in to the normal desktop and it works fine. Then I re-enable compiz and everything is fine. So compiz itself seems to not be the problem? Maybe it has something to do with how it is being called right after log in?I could try to live without compiz or just disable it every time I log out but that's a hassle.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Internal SD Card Reader Not Functioning In 11.4 On HP 630 Laptop?

I'm running openSUSE 11.4 on an HP 630 laptop with KDE. Everything works fine but cards inserted into the internal SD card reader are not read, and from what I can tell the reader is not recognized at all by openSUSE on my system. The reader does not appear listed in hardware information and is not listed with the command fdisk -l . There appear to be no references at all to the reader. The reader is recognized, however, on a live USB of Linux Mint 11, where the model is listed as "Generic - xD/SD/M.S." (the vendor too), revision 1.00. It is listed as an SCSI Controller scsi5. Typing lsscsi in the termal of openSUSE provides the following:

Fedora Hardware :: Can't Boot On HP Pavilion Dv6 6135 Laptop

Sep 8, 2011

I've been trying to boot an HP laptop (dv6-6135) with AMD APU A8-3500 from a F15 liveUSB. The machine gives an error message after trying to boot (the message is simplified):

Code:
... address space collision: host bridge window
[..] conflicts with Video ROM [..]
ACPI: [Package] has zero elements (..)

It does not matter if I try the x86 or the x86_64 version. What can I do to avoid this error and allow Linux to boot in the aforementioned laptop? I am sure the CPU with built-in graphics are to blame here, but a kernel parameter would solve the problem.

General :: Best Distro For Old Crappy Laptop? (HP Pavilion Zt1130)

Jan 19, 2010

I got a laptop for free. It's an old POS, but it was free, and it basically works for pretty much what I am going to use it for. Web Browsing, Cloud Computing type stuff.NOTE: I am an extreme Google Whore. To paraphrase Jay-Z: Google Mail, Google Docs, all Google Everything. lol. when considering my question, please keep this in mind.anyhow, this is what I am working with:

HP Pavilion zt1130
Windows XP SP3
Intel Celeron Processor 1133MHz
684MB RAM
S3 Graphics Twister 16MB
20GB Hard Drive
DirectX 9.0c
Linksys Wireless-G Network Adapter

as I mentioned above, I use Google Stuff for my primary computing Needs. GMail, Google Docs for Office stuff, Reader for RSS, etc. with Google Gears to make these apps usable offline. I also use LastFM, Twitter, etc. My preferred browser is Chrome, but I can settle for Firefox if necessary. I am trying to figure out if getting off of Windows XP, and switching to Linux might help with boosting the performance of this old, crappy machine(does the OS even matter in regards to this?), and maybe push it more towards being more of a Cloud Computing machine. and which Distro would probably be best for me and my computer.

I know absolutely nothing about Linux beyond common, basic stuff. So anything that requires some complex set up is not what I am looking for. I'd also need a decently easy to use GUI. But I am unsure about hardware compatibility and things like that. I don't wanna wipe my HD, and break the computer trying to install Linux,

Ubuntu Installation :: No Dual Boot - 10.10 Install Beside Vista On HP Pavilion Laptop

end_request: I/O error dev sr0, sector

Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).

Ubuntu Networking :: HP Pavilion Wireless Enable/Disable Button / "Wireless Disabled By Hardware Switch"?

May 11, 2011

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.

I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.

Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.

As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.
----
EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.
-----
EDIT 2:
found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty
seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Will Not Resume After Suspend

Apr 22, 2010

Whatever way I suspend my laptop (menu, keyboard shortcut, close lid), it seems to suspend just find (no panic lights, suspend LED indicator flashing as expected). However, when i try to resume, the laptop seems to begin the proper wakeup process (for example, the DVD-drive is tested), there's a lot of HDD activity for about 5 seconds, screen does not power on, and then the laptop just shuts off.

System setup:
lucid beta 2, fully updated (just check now)
LG E-500 laptop /w nvidia gforce mobile 8400G
bios version 1.17 from June 2007 (not sure this is important)

Things I tried:
* Completely remove anything to do with gpu drivers and installed nvidia-current driver.
* Suspend stress test described here. this didn't work at all. The first test failed (with ac adapter attached) and the second test suspended but didn't automatically resume (see "the behavior" above). Also, when I booted up again, no apport bug report is created. I tried both with rtc set to utc=yes and utc=no. with utc=yes, the second test did automatically resume, but the same problem happened (laptop shutdown while resuming).
* The debugging steps described here, but I couldn't get the "no_console_suspend" option to work. I tried adding both "no_console_suspend" and "no_console_suspend=1" (without quotes) to the boot script in the grub menu, but when I did pm-suspend in tty1, the laptop really did suspend. I would like to try to do this again if someone could explain how to add this option.

Notes:
* Not sure this is relevant, but when I boot up after a failed resume attempt, wireless network is disabled (this only happens after a failed resume!!!).
* I found a package called nvram-wakeup in synaptic that seems to be related to this. This package is not installed. Should I install it?
In case this is relevant, forgot to mention I'm running ubuntu in dual-boot along side windows7.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Does Not Automatically Suspend When Lid Opened

Oct 25, 2010

This is a new issue since 10.04 (9.10 did it right). I'm on 10.10 netbook right now. What I would like to figure out is how to tell the system to go into suspend when idle even though the lid is open. I don't know if this problem is hardware specific or just a config file edit. Just to get it out of the way, it does suspend correctly when the lid is closed - and I can tell it to suspend when the lid is open, but what I need is for it to suspend when I fall asleep working or forget I left it open without overheating / running out of battery and losing my work. I'm pretty good at doing things on linux, despite the fact that I'm running the netbook remix, so don't be afraid to tell me to open a file in the terminal or whatever.
