Apr 17, 2010Is a VMWare image compatible with Virtualbox? Or do I have to install VMWare to use the VMWare image. I only ask as I prefer Virtualbox.

Ubuntu :: Remove VMware And Go To Using VirtualBox?
Aug 4, 2010I installed Vmware and the installaion failed. I want to remove it and go back to using VirtualBox (simply because I am familiar with the software). However I am having some problems removing VMWare from my pc. It does not appear in the ubuntu software center and was wondering what command I can use to remove it. sudo ap-get remove vmware does not work (maybe my command is wrong?).
the installation did not complete, it installed fine from the installer (.sh file) however once I start it up it starts to install other components ie. Networking etc. This is where it does not finish installing.

Nov 1, 2010I am using vmware and virtualbox for experimenting with different linux distros and for using windows... When I switch to full screen, the upper portion(about 50px from top) of system becomes unusable because I am not able to click with my mouse anywhere there. So ubuntu's top panel becomes unaccesible and for vmware, once it becomes full screen I am not able to minimize/restore/close it.
In full screen mode, looking at the mouse cursor, it seems to be controlled by guest system when in full screen but as soon as I move it to top of the screen, the host machine takes control of it and then I cannot access any top panels or vmware toolbar. Is there any solution to this problem... Please let me know if more information is needed from my side.I am using opensuse 11.3, KDE4.4.4, vmware 3.1.2/virtualbox 3.2.10. The problem is for both vmware and virtualbox.

I can create a template in VMWare but it's a duplicate of the system I made it from. May 25, 2011I am testing to see whether after connecting to an Image on a server with VMware View Open Client I can get it to add a local desktop connected printer(usb). In Ubuntu 10.04 I have made this printer the default and printed a test page just fine, but when I go through VMware to a Windows Image all I can see are the printers that are connected to the local network. need to be able to deploy this to any location and add or see printers on the fly. As when it goes into the field it will be on a Wi-fi card to connect to the Windows Image through VMware. Am I missing a driver, or do I need to add something in the Startup Applications so it see's the printer outside of Ubuntu?

Apr 3, 2010I am using opensuse 11.2 kde 4.4.2 . I had a working installation of sun virtualbox 3.1 with its virtual image on an ntfs partition before upgrading kde, then I upgraded from KDE 4.3 to 4.4. Now when I start sun virtulabox it gives an error stating that it cant access my hard disk image file due wrong permissions and that the image is read only. I cant create a new image on that partition due same problem but I can create one on my home partition.

Jan 4, 2011I installed in my Slackware 13.1 with generic kernel 2.6.33.4-smp VirtualBox packages taken from SlackBuilds.org (acpica, virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-kernel). Then for testing purposes I installed in VirtualBox Windows XP using CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. It's a lot of fun to see Windows as an application in Linux!
Now I'm trying to install in VirtualBox Linux Mint using either USB flash drive prepared with unetbootin or mere ISO image. Without success. It seems VirtualBox 3.2.10 OSE doesn't recognize either USB flash drives or ISO images though it recognizes CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. I found some advices searching Internet but all of them are useless.

300 GB - Western Digital Velociraptor (10k RPM, about 4ms avg. seek)

The system will be running Ubuntu with the main purpose of doing lots of Java development. Occasionally I have to develop Java in a Windows VM; for this I need fast VMs. I read a lot about SSD wear and maybe it is a bad idea to put the Eclipse workspace on the SSD, because of all the little writes the builds do. Perhaps the workspace (and thus /home) might find a better place on the Velociraptor which is real fast. How should I partition the whole thing to get the most out of it. LVM might be an option, too. Maybe putting a third partition on the SSD for one VirtualBox image. Currently I am thinking:
SSD: 2GB /boot, remaining space for / Velociraptor: LVM spanning the whole drive. 150GB /home Remaining Space for /virtualMachines or something like that Samsung drives (LVM over both or one Volume Group for each? - Latter would be better in terms of data security, because if one drive in a big volume group fails everything is lost)
General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?
Jun 20, 2011I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

Jul 17, 2011I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.

Jul 27, 2011I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
General :: VMware Snapshot With VMware Tools Loses Network On Restart - Host XP - Guest Fedora
Oct 3, 2010I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
