My boss is asking me if there is any way to run a full version of Ubuntu from a flash drive without installing virtualbox/vmware on a windows host. I've been searching pendrivelinux.com and really haven't found anything. Can someone point me in the right direction?
View 6 RepliesI am using vmware and virtualbox for experimenting with different linux distros and for using windows... When I switch to full screen, the upper portion(about 50px from top) of system becomes unusable because I am not able to click with my mouse anywhere there. So ubuntu's top panel becomes unaccesible and for vmware, once it becomes full screen I am not able to minimize/restore/close it.
In full screen mode, looking at the mouse cursor, it seems to be controlled by guest system when in full screen but as soon as I move it to top of the screen, the host machine takes control of it and then I cannot access any top panels or vmware toolbar. Is there any solution to this problem... Please let me know if more information is needed from my side.I am using opensuse 11.3, KDE4.4.4, vmware 3.1.2/virtualbox 3.2.10. The problem is for both vmware and virtualbox.
I want to install Ubuntu but not as Dual-Boot (Other OS is Windows XP x64 edition).
Does Wubi perform significantly better than an Ubuntu version installed on VMWare or VirtualBox?

I just purchased vmware workstation 7 and I am trying to decide what the best host is. I will be running both windows, Linux, etc. I was hoping to go with the most stable and lean is and that is pointing towards ubuntu.
Does anyone have any experience with either or? any suggestions would be great and my linux skills are entry level but I always like to learn so I'm ready for the challenge.
I just had one hell of an experience trying to get openSUSE 11.2 to run on VMware server 2.0 on a Windows XP host. I am posting some instructions on how I finally got things working.
1) Download the openSuse iso image (and add-on CD if needed)
2) Download and install the VMWare server
3) Before you try to start the server console, you will need to configure the web access to allow you to log on. go to press Start->Programs->VMware->VMWare web access->Configure Tomcat
4) on the logon tab check logon as: option
5) add your account there and set the password
6) Now in your web browser (I use firefox) access the console via: [url] [url]
7) Before you start to create a virtual machine, you will want to set up the server to have access to your iso's. The server will only allow VM's access to specific directories through "datastores". You can either move the iso images to what has been specified as the default datastore... or create another datastore that points to the where you have the iso's.
8) Now we can create our virtual machine. This is simple, just press the button and follow the prompts.
a) at some point it will ask about an CD-Rom, you will want to use your suse DVD iso image. Select the option and then navigate the datastore that contains the image. Once found click and continue.
b) Network interface has 3 choices:
Bridged - the virtual machine will appear on the network as any other computer. Allows the VM to host server applications. User needs to have control over the network to ensure DHCP requests are handled (or static IP is assigned).
NAT - VMWare server will manage a virtual router, the VM is then connected to this router. On this router, the hosts internet is used as the WAN. Users do not have to have control of the network, but will have to setup port forwarding in VMWare to host server applications
Host Only - This means that the virtual machine can only talk to the host. The only way to get networking is to have a proxy through the host machine. This is setup on the host independent of VMWare. Users do not need control of the network, but control over the host. I doubt you could host server applications though.
9) With the VM created we can start it up. We can open a window to it through the console tab of the VMWare server console. When I first started it, it was stuck looking for an OS once the console finally rendered the graphics. A reset, an F2 at the post and selecting the appropriate boot media for boot got the installation started.
10) Install Suse as you would any other suse installation. I added a separate partition for swap, but kept the rest on one big one. Others may still want to maintain the separation of home and root
11) ---- Important Error/Solution ----
Once the installation has completed many will notice that the mouse or keyboard does not work! This was the source of my biggest head-ache. Some may think it was a problem with VMWare tools... I tried that to fix that and found the tools were working properly.
I am new to linux, it was nice to work with linux on virtual machine, but suddenly yesterday when I try to connect using putty from my windowsxp machine its showing network connection error. I dont know what happened. In linux machine ifconfig shows only 127.0.0.1, could not trace problem, guide me to trace the problem.
Previously it used to give 192.168.1.2/192.168.1.3 it used to vary every boot. FTP also stopped working. I am clueless. My system setup:

I have installed the most basic Arch Linux only with command line interface as guest OS on Windows using VMware. The problem is when I maximize the Vmware window, the Arch Linux console does not adjust to the full screen. How to do this without installing X window?
I also want to make copy-paste work to and fro from windows without installing X. Is it possible?
Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.
By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.
i was looking at putting windows on my Lucid laptop, so I can use my windows only apps. my question is, which version of windows would you use, if you had to? it would probably be between either NT, XP or 7.(would WinNT run modern apps?

There was two contentious issues in all the threads and I'd like em resolved once and for all
1.Should I or should I not make a swap partition on the flash drive? What about /var, /tmp and /log?
2.Also can someone rank the following in terms of access speed and snappiness:
1) Live CD
2) Live USB with or without persistence (average Sandisk stick)
3) External 2.5" HDD (5400-7200 RPM connected via USB 2.0)
4) Internal 5400-7200RPM HDD using SATAII
5) Full install on USB flash stick (average Sandisk stick)
Our company uses a customized vpnc (based on and almost the same as vpnc 0.5.3). I first tested it on a Windows host under Virtualbox everything works straight away. But when I want to use it on a Linux host directly it always ends in "No response from target". I have tested this on Fedora 12 and the latest Ubuntu.
I thought of firewall settings but iptables -L on Ubuntu returns an empty list even.
I have Fedora 12 (Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso) installed and booting in a VMWare workstation (version 6.5.3). I am able to login as the LiveUser.
I need information on how to access the drives on my host which is WindowsXP. My C: on the host is shared, and my network adapter for the VM is "NAT".
The only directory listed in my /mnt directory is "live".
My Fedora enviornment is "bare bones". There is nothing installed except for the original files from the "iso" loading procedure.

Earlier when I had Windows vista as host I have managed to get the internet connection on the RHEL but do not remember how I managed it. Now I need help in setting the internet connection on RHEL. View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed in my Slackware 13.1 with generic kernel 2.6.33.4-smp VirtualBox packages taken from SlackBuilds.org (acpica, virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-kernel). Then for testing purposes I installed in VirtualBox Windows XP using CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. It's a lot of fun to see Windows as an application in Linux!
Now I'm trying to install in VirtualBox Linux Mint using either USB flash drive prepared with unetbootin or mere ISO image. Without success. It seems VirtualBox 3.2.10 OSE doesn't recognize either USB flash drives or ISO images though it recognizes CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. I found some advices searching Internet but all of them are useless.
I'm a NOOB to CentOS and Linux in general. I've been trying to find a way to mount my USB flash drive (FAT32) so I can see my files. I've been told that I need to add a USB controller. My CentOS is running as a VMWARE guest in WS7 loaded on a Vista host. My physical hardware is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. I've been told I have to add a USB controller before I can mount. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.
So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?

I installed Ubuntu on to a usb hard drive now without that hard drive plugged in i cant get to my windows(it goes to grub recovery). With it plugged in it lets me pick witch OS to use. How do I get it to just boot right to windows when its not plugged in?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I have been running a dual boot system with Windows XP plus SUSE Linux 11.2 since january 2010. Now (2011-03-06) I downloaded Ubuntu 10,4 LTS, produced an installation CD, booted Windows XP and invoked the Wubi to instal Ubuntu under Windows. The good news is that it works! However, I would prefer a different setup.
Currently, when my PC boots, I can choose from the GRUB menu either SUSE Linux or Windows. When I select Windows, I see another menu where I can choose between Windows and my new Ubuntu Linux. I would like to install Ubuntu Linux such that my initial GRUB menu offers the choice between the three systems. From a few articles in the Ubuntu forums I conclude that it should be possible to do so. Is there an instruction on how to do it? I chose a headline that expresses my question in more general terms,

I have turned off all of the disk-caching options and have even set it to not remember my history. I only have three addons: NoScript, Adblock+, CS Lite. I could even get rid of CS Lite and manage my cookies totally manually if it means I'll have a faster GUI. Almost every time I interact with Firefox in any way I have to wait a few seconds and I get that damned spinning beach-ball (did I mention it's the OSX version?).

While I was on it, everything froze so I restarted, but when I restarted, the window to install Ubuntu from flash drive, or run it from flash drive, etc popped up even though I had already installed it. I chose to install it, but it wouldn't work. I tried to turn the computer on without the flash drive in, but it said to insert system disk, etc. I went into the Advanced BIOS and it was already set to first boot from harddrive.

Only one person I know of has been able to help me connect it to the internet and I can't find him anywhere, (Not ont he internet, in real life) so I figure that instead of trying to connect to the internet to get all my favorite programs, I should just download the programs to a flash drive and put them on that way. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my 8GB flash drive using these instructions. I've run the install and installed GRUB2 and 10.04. However, selecting 10.04 on GRUB doesn't work.
On the instructions, it says this:

I'm not sure what the equivalent step would be for the GRUB2 files.
