I want to install Ubuntu but not as Dual-Boot (Other OS is Windows XP x64 edition).
Does Wubi perform significantly better than an Ubuntu version installed on VMWare or VirtualBox?
My computer has:Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33GHz. 4GB RAM. An almost empty 450GB HD (defragmented)
My boss is asking me if there is any way to run a full version of Ubuntu from a flash drive without installing virtualbox/vmware on a windows host. I've been searching pendrivelinux.com and really haven't found anything. Can someone point me in the right direction?

However I am having some problems removing VMWare from my pc. It does not appear in the ubuntu software center and was wondering what command I can use to remove it. sudo ap-get remove vmware does not work (maybe my command is wrong?).
the installation did not complete, it installed fine from the installer (.sh file) however once I start it up it starts to install other components ie. Networking etc. This is where it does not finish installing.

Is a VMWare image compatible with Virtualbox? Or do I have to install VMWare to use the VMWare image. I only ask as I prefer Virtualbox.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI mostly do .Net development in a Windows 7 virtualbox. I use the host for simple things such as web browsing, skype, chat, etc. All things that are fantastically available on Ubuntu which I in many ways prefer. So this has been begging the question for a while: why even use Windows on the host, seems like a Linux host would use less resources (untested) and allow my Windows VMs to run better while allowing me to do my non-development stuff in an interface I prefer.
So easiest way to do this - I downloaded wubi and installed Ubuntu. I installed in it Virtualbox, and then start add and start my VM to get this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine VS2010, Could not open the medium '/host/Users/George Mauer/Virtualbox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi; VD: error VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND opening image file '/host/Users/George Mauer/Virtualbox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi; (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).
You see what's going on? With wubi, the windows drive gets mounted at /host/ but virtualbox is for some reason appending an absolute path! I would very much like to use the same exact VM file since it would retain Snapshots and I would be able to use it in either windows or Ubuntu mode. However, even if I try to simply mount the drives into a new VM I get an error: Failed to open the hard disk /host/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi. Cannot register the hard disk '/host/Users/George Mauer/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi' {guid...} because a hard disk '/host/Users/George Mauer/VirtualBox VMs/VS2010/C:/Users/George Mauer.VirtualBox/HardDisks/VS2010.vdi with UUID {guid...} already exists.
This is especially odd since this worked fine with my recently created Android VM, though this might have something to do with the fact that VirtualBox recently changed their default VM storage locations. Any idea how to fix this? My Linux-fu is weak but I seem to remember from CS class something about symbolic links that might be relevant here?
What I have done so far with Debian: I used dd in Ubuntu Lucid to put the Debian live GDE version onto a USB stick, and I successfully booted my Toshiba Mini with it in under a minute! That even blows Easy Peasy away! I love the simplicity of the DE. For now I want to get the GDE version of Debain installed to a USB stick. (That is, I will use the live USB that I created to direct the installation to a USB stick that is plugged into the computer).
What I think that I know: I was successful to use a live Ubuntu Lucid USB to install Ubuntu Lucid to both a USB stick and an SDHC card, and that is what I am running right now. I have encountered issues with this process, such as apparently the /dev/sdx that was recognized during install being different when I try to boot the new stick, and I only happen to eventually mysteriously boot after, say, trying a different USB port. My main concern is a functional internet connection, otherwise I will be helpless when I try to confront any other kind of Debian problem, and of course I will soon want to begin installing packages. In Ubuntu Lucid my wireless card was nonfunctional, and I spent two weeks working on finding a "solution", which was something I believe called a Personal Package Archive, my first and only use of such a thing.

$ sudo apt-get install rtl8192ce-dkms
As far as I understand the first command, as with much of what I do with GNU/Linux, I must simply trust the benevolence of the package provider that their code will not ruin my hardware. The firmware issue does disburb me a bit, and it seems that Toshiba and Realtek or whoever is responsible would like to require me to use Windows in order to configure my wireless card. (That seems like it should be illegal.) Thank god I did manage to find a completely GNU solution, and thank the community for always being there trying to provide solutions like this.
So, appologizing for that overly elaborate introduction: Are there any pitfalls that I should avoid in the process of installing from the live GDE Debian USB to another USB stick on my Toshiba Mini, or if this is even possible in Debian? Is there a more appropriate solution to get my wireless card to work (instead of using the PPA mentioned above)? For instance, the wireless light never changes from amber to green (which I guess is what should indicate that the card is connected or not?), even though I am obviously connected to the interent (here I am). How do I force the installation to recognize my USB more primitively/reliably than as a /dev/sdx file (which seems to be quite dynamicly allocated from one boot to the next)?

I start up the computer. I get the choice to book windows 7 or Ubuntu I choose Ubuntu and then I get the list of boot installers to choose from and it is play time.
Today when I went to get onto my Ubuntu install, I got the first window asking if I want Windows or Ubuntu and when I chose Ubuntu, rather than going to the Grub boot menu, the laptop would just restart and go back to the first window asking if I wanted windows 7 or Ubuntu.
It seems the Grub boot files are gone. Now I have read that the fix for this is to use a live disk of Ubuntu to reinstall Grub2 BUT it is my impression the Wubi does not install Ubuntu "normally"
Can I rescue Grub using a live disk as if ubuntu was installed directly yo a partition from a regular ISO or is there another way to do it if it was installed by Wubi?
