i am trying to create an image of Slackware OS but vmware is not able to detect the disk. it gives me below error, "Unable to detect disks or volumes on the source machine. Make sure that the source is a supported linux distribution." can some one tell me what do i need to do to create the image.

I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
copies all the contents (including free space). So sdb also needs to be 80GB.
You will notice that in VMWare or VirtualBox disk images, it is possible to set the disk to use only the amount of space of actual data. So a 80GB virtualbox/vmware image with 4GB of contents will be 4GB.
Is it possible to do that with an actual hard disk (sda) image? I want to create an image of an actual hard disk, copy it to DVD and transport it (in mail) for restoration on another computer (having same hard disk).
At the Get Slackware page at the Slackware website it gives a list of addresses which when I click one of the addresses it redirects to another page with a list of mirror images. Which address and which mirror image do I need to work with Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook so I can create a USB startup disk? With my connection speed these mirror image downloads take about an hour and a half and I cannot just be guessing which mirror image to download.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having a rather strange issue. I have windows 98 installed into a disk image that I use bochs to boot it with. I want to transfer some files to the image but now I am unable to mount it. I will attach the drive to the loopback device but when I go to mount I get wrong fs type bad option ... etc.
The command I used to mount was

cfdisk shows it ok as does fdisk. shows as a fat16 file system. When I attempt to check it for errors using fsck.msdos I get

When I boot into windows 98 in bochs and check the disk it tells me there is no problems.
Ok, so I have installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61p, setup the wireless adapter (why is this so difficult?) and installed a few applications. I do like the look of openSUSE but would like to check out a few other flavours. With my Windows 7 (can I say that here?) machines I can create a system image and a system restore CD with a fair amount of ease. Is there a similar process available for Linux?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBasically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.

Currently, I'm just running Ubuntu off the cd. Having checked the "Ubuntu Software Centre" on my computer, I notice that it has Brasero installed, and I was wondering:
1) First off, where can I find it? (Is there a search function in Ubuntu like Windows?)
2) Is Brasero a good choice to create a disk image?

I have discovered that by using syslinux I can make the USB Hard-drive Bootable -- I learned this by playing around with Gentoo, however, I like Slackware. I was wondering if any-one could point me toward the direction of how to install Slackware and then utilize syslinux to make it bootable?
I am having trouble both installing or even just booting the live CD. I have to interrupt the boot to give the nomodeset boot option.
Once I get the Ubuntu splash with the oscillating red and white dots for several moments, I get the Busybox with the error message "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system"
If I do a dmesg I then see a lot of sr0 errors. I have an onboard SCSI controller but no scsi devices. I am not sure if this matters.
I am running Fedora Core 13 and I am having problem creating a bootdisk. As I enter the command mkbootdisk, I receive the error "command not found". I even tried to enter the full path i.e /sbin/mkbootdisk while logged in as root and I still get the same error.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
Currently we use an iSCSI SAN as storage for several VMware ESXi servers. I am investigating the use of an NFS target on a Linux server for additional virtual machines. I am also open to the idea of using an alternative operating system (like OpenSolaris) if it will provide significant advantages.What Linux-based filesystem favours very large contiguous files (like VMware's disk images)? Alternatively, how have people found ZFS on OpenSolaris for this kind of workload?

After three hours of working with it, the disk size has bloated to 4.3 GB. I havent added software to account for the near doubling in size. How do I reduce the size back to 2.7GB range or lower. Im new to Fedora and superuser controls. Im removing more software than adding software. Is this a VMWARE problem or Fedora problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with getting my Linux distribution (Debian amd64-bit) to install. Everything works the way it should - from booting a live CD/DVD (any distro) to running the text-based or gui installation right after bootup. Up until the Linux installation gets to the step for detecting my SATA hard disk drive(s), but before (or at the same time as) initiating the partitioning step, it'll freeze/hang my screen and my CD/DVD drives instantaneously - and the only fix is a forced shutdown and/or hard reboot.
I don't know what causes this, but I tried googling online and all that I really found out was that it might be an issue with running 32-bit vs 64-bit installations - but this is not the case; from running Gparted on Knoppix 32-bit or the partitioning step during a Debian 64-bit installation. Also, I read a random post online related to running kernel commands / parameters alongside the installation (e.g. acpi=off or something similar) stating that it might help?
Anyone got any ideas or solutions? I'm a real newbie when it comes to Linux (though, I'm quite knowledgeable when it comes to computers and technology, and Windows) - else I wouldn't be posting in this forum sub-section, hehe. I can't quite get my head around this one - despite trying my best to find a solution online beforehand.
I just downloaded the FEDORA iso image file. Naturally, the next step is to create a DVD. The problem is I'm using a mininetbook hith no DVD unit and I have not an external one, so I think I can use the USB as an alternative, but I just don't find how to in the documentation, and the applications to burn DVD's dont have the option... how can I do this?

Ubuntu does not tell how to make a bootstick using anything but Windows,Mac, and Ubuntu. I tried "dd if=...ubuntu... of=/dev/sdb bs=512" and it did not put anything on the stick. I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?
