Nov 9, 2010I have got an ISO image file which is 5.9 Gb - how can I burn this to DVD the only discs I have are 4.7Gb. The opening of the ISO file shows that the DVD is split into three separate menus - can I try to retrieve just one and write to DVD, if so how.

Jan 4, 2011I am having trouble burning an iso disc image that I downloaded of the Windows Vista Recovery disc for a friend who cannot boot her computer anymore. I downloaded the iso disc image and it mounts on my computer just fine, so it should be able to be burned as the disc image to a CD no problem. However, each time I right click on the iso file, and go down to Write to Disc, and then the menu comes up and I make sure that the destination drive is my CD/DVD burner drive with a blank CD-R in the drive, it burns the disc, but it always ends up being a CD with the file of the iso on the disc...!! It doesn't burn the image, it burns a copy of the image as a file! I uninstalled the CD/DVD burning software that was on my computer and installed CD/DVD Creator instead from the Ubuntu Software Center.
I tried following the steps on [URL] which tells how to burn a disc image from an ISO file. I follow it exactly, but I still get the same results: I get a disc that is not the image, but has the image on the disc. Now, I can mount the image on the disc on my computer, but that won't do my friend any good who needs to BOOT off this disc to fix her computer running Windows Vista. But ever since I wiped out my computer and went Ubuntu, I haven't been able to write an iso disc image to a CD or DVD properly. Does it matter if it is a CD or a DVD that is used? Like, if I put a DVD in, would the disc iso image burn to the DVD rather than a CD because of the way the image was made? For some reason I never thought it mattered, but does it?

Jan 21, 2011In an effort to get back to learning Linux have recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 LTS on a spare computer I have. I would like a way to mount my DVD .iso files that I spent hours ripping. On my Windows computers I just use DaemonTools. In my quest to find something similar for Linux I ran across AcetoneISO. The issue is that when I try to mount an .iso from the Windows share folder I get a message stating that only local images can be mounted. To need to have the images on this computer would defeat the purpose of having the file server with 4.5 terabytes of storage. Is there a way I can mount the .iso files without transferring them to the Kubuntu machine first? If I have to use different software I am fine with that. I am not looking for the command line option as I will never remember the name of every .iso I have.

Dec 19, 2009I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

That URL yields an image, but I can't figure out how to convert that image to a usable file format. It's OTF generated, so unlike other sites that have a format like .../image.jpg, this URL isn't playing nice.

Jul 31, 2010I have a bunch of disk images, made with ddrescue, on an EXT partition, and I want to reduce their size without losing data, while still being mountable. How can I fill the empty space in the image's filesystem with zeros, and then convert the file into a sparse file so this empty space is not actually stored on disk?
For example:
> du -s --si --apparent-size Jimage.image
120G Jimage.image
> du -s --si Jimage.image
121G Jimage.image
This actually only has 50G of real data on it, though, so the second measurement should be much smaller.
This supposedly will fill empty space with zeros: cat /dev/zero > zero.file rm zero.file But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it? Note: For some reason, sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=./zero.file works when cat does not on a mounted disk image.
General :: Program To Convert Audio File Of Fax Transmission To Image?
Dec 2, 2010I have a number of uncompressed audio files recorded off of an analog (POTS) telephone line of fax transmissions. Is there a Linux utility or library I could use to convert these files into images of the fax they contain? I'm not looking to send/receive a fax via a modem, but just to "replay" the communications tones and parse out the fax message.I'm guessing this may not be possible due to duplex issues and not knowing which end of the conversation is sending what,but thought I'd ask to see if anyone knew of something.

Dec 29, 2010Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.
Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.

Jan 2, 2010I'm looking for a graphics editor which will convert/resize the aspect ratio of the anamorphic images I create in-camera to their appropriate size. I'm shooting my images on film and digital. My digital camera is a Sony H50 with native 4:3 format. I'm also shooting with a Hasselblad EL/M with the standard 6x6 format.
Using my 2x anamorphic head on either camera will produce the following results: Sony H50: 4:3 > 2.66:1 (8:3) Hasselblad EL/M: 6x6 > 12x6. We're easily talking about 48"x24" or 60"x30" prints here folks! So I need to know which programs in Linux will give me the results I'm looking for.

Now I am wondering if any of you had good experience with any other mp3 player on Ubuntu. The two things I want are firstly a product of high quality n functionality like those two mentioned above AND secondly a seamless ubuntu compatibility. I'd love to see synchronization and stuff working out of the box. Anyone out there found a outstanding product and like to give a recommendation?
