I'm using the Virtual box on Ubuntu which has Windows XP on it. Probably after WinXP was automatically updated, I started getting an error message: "DLL C:WINDOWSsystem32DNSAPI.dll is not a valid windows image." and I cannot log on anymore. I tried to find a solution but since I'm using the Virtualbox, I don't know how to access the virtual "Windows folder" from Ubuntu
View 7 RepliesI'm using ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I've also got my WinXP Toshiba Rescue CD which i'd like to install in VirtualBox but it just won't go past the 'unpacking' part. When it says that it's completed, the only option i have is clicking OK. Doing that just shuts down the VM then. And when I restart the VM, it just does the unpacking step all over again. Last year when I had a dual boot system (XP and ubuntu 8.10 i think it was), the installation went fine until I realized that my ubuntu partition was way too small. So I could not install XP in a VM. But it still got to the actual windows installation step. I'm still using the same PC the rescue CD came with.

I cannot see the programs I have downloaded when using Explorer for Windows.Ordinarily, in a WinXP only system, I just find the program to be installed and double click on it to start the automatic installation routine.In this case, I cannot see any of the .exe files used for the install.I have placed those downloaded Windows application in the same directory on my Ubuntu Box as where VirtualBox, the Sun Guest Editions and the CD Image of the Garmin Trip and Map system.I installed the Garmin system directly from and ISO of the CD I made using Brasero. It works without a hitch.Should I take the Windows e.e programs and burn them to a CD and then transfer them as ISO tback to the VM drive?

However when I try to start the machine what I see is a mere black screen... The boot order is fine. However it seems strange that no data is read from the virtual hard drive (which is about 2.15 GB):

I've tried using the "devices->Shared Folders" to create a shared folder but it didn't work. I still couldn't see it from the guest OS (winXP). I also, tried sharing a folder in winXP and then tried adding a network folder in dolphin - also didn't work.

I am using opensuse 11.2 kde 4.4.2 . I had a working installation of sun virtualbox 3.1 with its virtual image on an ntfs partition before upgrading kde, then I upgraded from KDE 4.3 to 4.4. Now when I start sun virtulabox it gives an error stating that it cant access my hard disk image file due wrong permissions and that the image is read only. I cant create a new image on that partition due same problem but I can create one on my home partition.

I installed VirtualBox and created a fixed size disk image of 50 Gb for a virtual Windows XP64 OS. Now I require more disk space with additional 100 Gb. Is there a way to add another partition to the virtualized OS as if I added a new hard drive to the system?
In other words, I'd like to create another disk image by using additional space from the same physical drive and mount it under Windows XP in VirtualBox.
I installed in my Slackware 13.1 with generic kernel 2.6.33.4-smp VirtualBox packages taken from SlackBuilds.org (acpica, virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-kernel). Then for testing purposes I installed in VirtualBox Windows XP using CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. It's a lot of fun to see Windows as an application in Linux!
Now I'm trying to install in VirtualBox Linux Mint using either USB flash drive prepared with unetbootin or mere ISO image. Without success. It seems VirtualBox 3.2.10 OSE doesn't recognize either USB flash drives or ISO images though it recognizes CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. The system will be running Ubuntu with the main purpose of doing lots of Java development. Occasionally I have to develop Java in a Windows VM; for this I need fast VMs. I read a lot about SSD wear and maybe it is a bad idea to put the Eclipse workspace on the SSD, because of all the little writes the builds do. Perhaps the workspace (and thus /home) might find a better place on the Velociraptor which is real fast. How should I partition the whole thing to get the most out of it. LVM might be an option, too. Maybe putting a third partition on the SSD for one VirtualBox image. Currently I am thinking:
SSD: 2GB /boot, remaining space for / Velociraptor: LVM spanning the whole drive. 150GB /home Remaining Space for /virtualMachines or something like that Samsung drives (LVM over both or one Volume Group for each? - Latter would be better in terms of data security, because if one drive in a big volume group fails everything is lost)
My set up is internal hard drive Windows 7, external Ubuntu Karmic. The reason I have it this way, despite Linux being my main OS, is because my internal hard drive is 6 years old and half the capacity of my external new one. Have tried quite a few set ups with various Linux platforms, but have finally settled on above. As yet, I don't know Linux or Ubuntu all that well. Getting somewhere, but it's a steep learning curve.
Because of constant errors reinstalling WinXP - umpteen installations and it keeps crashing - the problems are with security updates and SP3 - I finally bit the bullet and intalled Win 7. I only need Windows for a few essential programs or I'd happily never look at it again, so it filled me with horror doing this, but I couldn't take the crashes any more. So, today, Win 7 installs just nicely. However, I can no longer boot my external Ubuntu hard drive. The error is, 'Grub loading stage 1.5... Grub loading please wait... Error 15'. I load up the live cd, but when I try to follow instructions given to other people with Error 15 (editing files, accessing root) I don't have permissions.
I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

This problem originated when I moved XP from sdc to sdb using clonezilla. I installed Ubuntu after that, however, and I have since run update-grub, so the menu entries should reflect that move. Also, all drives are set to IDE in BIOS.
However, I can mount the windows partition in Ubuntu and read all the files fine.
Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.
Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.
I have wordpress server running on my machine and I have SELinux enabled for enforcing/targeted. I am unable to insert images, music, etc from the add new post field on the wordpress dashboard. I receive the following error:
image.jpg has failed to upload due to an error The uploaded file could not be moved to /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10. When I disable SELinux completely, it works fine. Does anyone know what Boolean I need to check to resolve this issue?
Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.

It was 3 partitions in one HD (two OS' and one for files) and another separate HD (which doesn't have any system, it's just media files and stuff). When booted, I used to get the Windows 7 screen, that allowed me to either boot 7 or XP. I thought I had tested 7 enough and wanted to try Ubuntu, so I (from the Ubuntu CD which I downloaded and burned) deleted the 7 partition and made a 2GB swap partition, and, what was left, an Ubuntu partition on which I installed it.
Now when I boot I get an Ubuntu boot screen that shows several Ubuntu options and a WinXP option. Ubuntu works fine, but if I choose WinXP, I get "Error 12: Invalid device requested". I didn't change anything more than what I said. The details for the WinXP boot option seem to be:
rootnoverify (hd0,4)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader++
What can I do to be able to boot WinXP again? (and also Ubuntu, whenever I want to). The only thing I can think of is using Windows XP CD's restore thing to restore the boot menu, but that would stop me from using Ubuntu...

Trying to run windows only apps. I installed Wine first from software center. Most progs I try to run only give me the 'working' icon for 20 seconds then nothing. I did modify properties to allow .exe to run. I Dl'ed & installed the VirtualBox package w sw center and same deal- nothing. No error messages or anythng.
Running Ubuntu maverick. My Cpu is a compaq presario laptop CQ50, dual core intel T3200. Not the best but should at least start the progs yes?
