We need to create a "golden" or generic image as a template to VMWare so we can deploy test servers quickly. I can create a template in VMWare but it's a duplicate of the system I made it from. How do I "unconfigure" the template system so that it goes to the installation screen to input things like host name, I/P address and so on?
i'm attempting to configure the vmware server on the above mentioned system, without luck.i can't get the vmmon to compile. I have tried this out-dated guide but no luck. I have setup made the necessary links as explained in this guide I haven't managed to try out the any-any patch since no link to the patch is alive anymore.Since slack 13.37 is using 2.6.37.3 kernel I wonder if anyone has found a way to compile the vmware modules on these recent kernels.
I have a hard drive which already has Windows installed. On a new hard drive, I have Ubuntu Linux installed. Is there anyway to run my already installed Windows using Vmware Player on my Ubuntu setup?
i cant download and install anything. it appears i need to install linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic (version 2.6.31-21.59) but when i try to i get You have 1 broken package on your system! Use the "Broken" filter to locate it. can someone tell me how to fix a broken package
i am trying to create an image of Slackware OS but vmware is not able to detect the disk. it gives me below error, "Unable to detect disks or volumes on the source machine. Make sure that the source is a supported linux distribution." can some one tell me what do i need to do to create the image.
I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
My normal update/upgrade of packages on a LAMP server (Ubuntu 10.04) for my business has resulted in the following error:
Code: Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d. run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common 2.6.32-24-generic-pae /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic-pae run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/nvidia-common exited with return code 10 Failed to process /etc/kernel/postinst.d at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic-pae.postinst line 1003.
I'm playing around with the RHEL 6 install so as to create a minimal install image to be used as a generic node for a cloud. I posted this in the security section as reducing the number of services etc seems like a security activity, i.e. reducing the running processes to minimize the attack surface.
Anyways, looking through linux from scratch etc, and the NSA hardening list I'm a bit overwhelmed. Anyone have hints on any good documentation saying what is really needed for a basic system with network/ip/arp/eb rules? The RHEL 6 minimal basic puts in a c/c++ compiler along with other things. that seems unnecessary to me for a basic minimal install.
I did the following command while I had my partition mounted and was not able to restart until i pulled the power. sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic. Everything seems to be working okay now but before I start getting into 10.04 i wanna make sure i just didn't screw anything up.
There is a bug in the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I have repeated it three times. During the "installing the upgrades" section, the upgrade always stops or freezes in the same place. The Terminal message stops at "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic". "update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-21-generic". I have a new DELL laptop computer that came with Ubuntu 9.04 pre-installed. I am using the Update Manager and have previously updated all files for 9.04 before clicking on upgrading to 9.10.
i use the command to get the infomation of my linux kernel; sudo dpkg --get-selections|grep linux use this cmd to delete the old kernel sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.32-29-generic but i forget --purge that cause zhe following item show like this linux-image-2.6.32-28-generic deinstall
I am testing to see whether after connecting to an Image on a server with VMware View Open Client I can get it to add a local desktop connected printer(usb). In Ubuntu 10.04 I have made this printer the default and printed a test page just fine, but when I go through VMware to a Windows Image all I can see are the printers that are connected to the local network. need to be able to deploy this to any location and add or see printers on the fly. As when it goes into the field it will be on a Wi-fi card to connect to the Windows Image through VMware. Am I missing a driver, or do I need to add something in the Startup Applications so it see's the printer outside of Ubuntu?
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?
I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"
I was previously using kernel-huge until a slackware update caused some problems for me, so I switched over to kernel-generic but now I'm wondering if it uses both of my cpus on my dual core processor.
I have created a binary executable of a script, compiled using shc on Red Hat. However, when i tried to run the executable on Solaris, it does not work. Are there any other compiler that i can use, so that the binary executable created can be run on both red hat and solaris?

I configured cups and I managed to print successfully with generic text only but my problem is that the printout always comes out as 80 columns. anything more than 80 colums wraps on the next page. I tried changing the pagesize at the textonly.ppd but it didn't work.my textonly.ppd is
Is it possible to install Snow Leopard 10.6.6 VMware AMD edition (which I downloaded) on VMware linux? It is under Windows 7 so I just need to know if everything of VMware linux (like Hardware Virtualization) is the same under linux as for Windows.
I want to install debian on vmware workstation 7.1.4 but there's a problem! when I try to install vmware tools or open-vm, it can't complete compile modules of vmware. It is a big problem... It seem problem of kernel version after 2.6.37... But I can't find solution. logs.... Before you can compile modules, you need to have the following installed...
I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.
