May 6, 2011

Just upgraded from 3GB to 4GB. BIOS screen shows laptop has 4GB. surpringly, within Ubuntu, System Monitor shows only 3.3GB. What is the reason?

I upgraded a DL580 G4 server from Red Hat 4.4 to 5.2 (2.6.18-92.el5 #1 SMP Tue Apr 29 13:16:15 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and now when I run the multipath - l command I only see one path. There are 4 LUNs being presented on each fibre channel, so I should see sda - sdh in /dev, but I only see sda - sdd.

device-mapper-event-1.02.24-1.el5

One of my two laptops is a P-III at 800 mhz and 1 Gig memory running Ubuntu 8.04.This runs very well.I'd like to upgrade to 10.04 LTS because I like to stay current with the LTS releases but I wonder if maybe it will run too slow on this old computer.
1. Upgrade to 10.04 ?
2. Change over to Lubuntu 10.04 ?
3. Or just stick with 8.04 figuring it works and this laptop is too slow for something newer
I've tested both Ubuntu 10.04 and Lubuntu 10.04 from Live CDs but with a lot of CD I/O it's hard to judge whether these would run satisfactorily from the hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive does not have sufficient space to co-install 10.04 with 8.04 for a parallel test.

I have an ancient laptop, an IBM T-20 with a Pentium 3 and 250 megs of RAM, which works great for blogging and email. I have used Ubuntu on it for nearly four years now. Last night I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 and now it won't get to the log-in screen. The BIOS splash screen appears, then the GRUB screen, then the Ubuntu trademark screen appears, with the horizontal progress indicator scrolling from left to right. And when it gets all the way to the right, the screen goes blank. Then the screen flashes twice, as if it's trying to display in a resolution it doesn't support, and then it goes blank again. The HD activity light flashes about every five seconds and the keyboard is unresponsive.

I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 via Update Manager. Upon reboot after the upgrade, I only got as far as the log-on sound and the laptop locked up. Even the power button was unresponsive, so I had to unplug the laptop and let the battery run out to get the thing turned off. I then tried doing a clean install from the CD, but got the same lock-up problem afterwards. I finally had to do a clean reinstallation of 9.10. I am using a Sony PCG-GRT240G Notebook. Are there any steps I can take to get 10.04 to work flawlessly? To get 9.10 to work flawlessly, all I had to do was boot with the noapic parameter.

I upgraded to Lucid a week or two ago. Sound has worked fine, then suddenly, yesterday, I have no sound for any application. The Gnome sound applet shows the volume normally, and have the Mute All option greyed out (not selectable). Nothing stands out as wrong or unusual under sound preferences, and I didn't change anything, although I did recently install a set of updates. There is no physical mute button on this laptop. IT is not account-specific, there are no sound effects even before you log in.
As well, since the upgrade I have intermittently not had the networking icon in the notification area appear, it is covered over by a fragment of some other graphic. It is most usable with the Human these, it is completely unusable with any of the new themes. Anyone know a fix for either of these two issues, especially the first?
Finding Lucid extremely flaky, particularly the signature themes. I like some aspects of it, such as the fact the wireless button on my laptop works now, but overall, not an impressive effort - someone whose first introduction to Ubuntu is Lucid and sees that the notification area doesn't even work correctly is not likely to stick around.

upgrade a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04.
Since wifi is the only connection to the Net, I'll have to burn a CD/DVD to perform the upgrade.
how well that works, traps to pay attention to, tips to make it run smoothly, etc.

I tried to use the automatic upgrade to version 10 last night on my Acer Aspire 8930G. Everything seemed to work fine until I got to the reboot. At the reboot it tells me that it is running in low resolution mode because the nvidia drivers have been removed. That is fine except I cannot hit the enter button to accept the message either using the laptop keyboard or by restarting and using a USB keyboard.
I have a dual boot with windows and I'm averse to just reinstalling ubuntu because there is some data which would be annoying to lose.

I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

I just attempted to upgrade my laptop from F11 to F13 using yum according to the instructions here. Everything seemed to go fine - the download and install took about an hour - but upon reboot it appears that all of my packages are still fc11 packages. It looks like I got the updates in the F11 repos but not an actual upgrade to F13.

I decided to go and install ubuntu 10.10 today. I have two partitions on my HDD. Ubuntu only sees one HDD, and not the two partitions. I get no option to dual boot vista and ubuntu at all. It is only format and use the entire disk, or install manually. I go into gparted and all ubuntu sees is one unformatted HDD. But vista sees two partitions. I have all of my media on one partition. I REALLY don't want to go and format the entire drive to lose my things. Is there a work around for this? I have no access to any other PC.

I have three computers; Ubuntu desktop, Windows 7 laptop, and OSX laptop 10.5.8. I have a shared usb hard drive on my Ubuntu desktop. My Windows 7 machine sees and accesses it just fine. My OSX computer sees it in the finder window, but says it can't access it because it can't find the original file. I have tried to "repair the alias" but it doesn't work. I have shared another folder on the Ubuntu desktop, but the new share is on the desktop internal hard drive. OSX can access that share with no problems. What in the world is going on? If Windows 7 can see and access, is this an OSX problem or is there a terminal command that I am missing? I am networking using Samba on the Ubuntu computer and the explorer/finder windows on the Windows7/OSX computers.

I just used Update Manager to upgrade to 10.4 and all I get is the Ubuntu logo screen with the dots and then the screen goes black and there's no other response. This happened after the upgrade completed installing and I received the message to restart the computer. I have never been able to get it to boot.
I can boot fine by selecting the next older kernal although I do get some messages that I don't understand. It all works so I presume it's OK. The kernal that was installed with the upgrade is 2.6.32-24-generic and I've seen other posts about boot problems with it. The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Windows boots normally. I saw a suggestion on another thread about booting into an older kernal and then issuing the sudo update-intramfs -u -k command. I tried it and it didn't help.
Next I tried 2.6.32-24-generic recovery mode and I tried the option to fix damaged packages. It seemed to do something although I saw error messages about not being able to find various software sources. I tried a normal boot afterwards and same problem. Recovery mode has another menu option about repairing grub but I don't want to try that. I'm not a power user and this is all over my head. Before I turn the laptop into an unusable door stop,

I recently installed the 32bit version of 10.10 on my Dell Latitude E6510. Everything went smoothly.. in fact I was quite impressed as I have my laptop in a docking station connected to dual 24" displays. The installer recognized them and they worked perfectly right outta the box: yea for Ubuntu !
After the install, I installed some apps then upgraded the installation to the latest hotness - lots and lots of things were upgraded. I restarted the machine to "complete the upgrade process" and it boots but right when it gets to starting the Windows environment, both display just loose their signal...
It boots fine to the command line if I boot in safe mode. I had installed the nVidia drivers but I did that before the update and I had no problems until I did the system update. Any ideas? Should I start by disabling the 3rd party drivers? If so, how would I do that?

Everything was working when I was on Ubuntu 9.04 but after I upgraded to 9.10 via their upgrade utility. The upgrade failed at the last point of installation (when it tried to install daemon I think). Nevertheless, after the reboot I was on ubuntu 9.10. But the sound stopped working as well as the mouse trackpad on my laptop. I remember that during the installation when it asked if I wanted to keep the old sound configuration file, I clicked yes. So is there I way to fix/reinstall the sound driver and the tackpad? In the sound hardware setting window, no device is listed. I'm pretty sure that my hardwares work on ubuntu 9.10 as the sound and trackpad work fine using the ubuntu 9.10 live CD.

i recently started dual booting with Kubuntu using an external HDD. GRUB works fine, but it sees two Kubuntu's on the drive. In GRUB, i see "Ubuntu-Linux Kernel (for some reson its not identified as Kubuntu) on /dev/sdb1 (external drive)", then i see recovery mode beneath it, and the exact same line right below recovery mode, followed by another recovery mode. strangely, selecting either one boots into kubuntu no problem at all. is this a problem and is there anyway i can delete the duplicate entries?

I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.

I'm running Debian Squeeze and last night i upgraded to the latest kernel release. Rebooted and noticed that as the system temp rises the fan runs louder(as expected)t unlike before, it no longer gets quieter as the temp drops again. I didn't really think the OS managed that so bit confused why it is happening.I booted into Windows 7 and with the exact same temps the fan drops back down to a quieter state

I'm getting rather bewildered.
I followed these instructions to setup my wusb11 driver using ndiswrapper:
[URL]
But when I try to ifup the interface, I get:
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 4
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 10
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3
No DHCPOFFERS received.
iwconfig shows that no essid is assigned, even though I have specified one in /etc/interfaces.
Then if I go through the desktop gui Preferences -> Network to setup my wireless connection, /etc/interfaces does not seem to change but iwconfig then reports the essid is assigned.
Anyway, on my default taskbar there is a wireless icon. Clicking on that shows the wireless access points in the area. I see my own. When I try to connect to it, it prompts for my wep key. I enter the key, it thinks, and then acts as if I'd entered the wrong key.
Specifically of course, I'd like this to get fixed so that I can happily surf the net again, etc.
But I also I'm wondering why it seems that there is a disconnect between /etc/interfaces and Preferences->Network. If I type in a WEP key in the gui, I would think that it should appear in /etc/interfaces.
I'm definitely a Ubuntu wireless newbie, and not very experienced at Ubuntu anyway.

There are at least 8 publicly shared folders on that PC that other Windows pc's can connect to without problem.

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a new computer which also has Windows XP installed. This computer is connected to the internet via a USB Zonet ZEW2590 802.11N wireless card with the Ralink RT3070 chipset. Ubuntu sees the wireless card and it connected to my wireless router without any problems. When I look at the connection information it says the wireless card is connected at 24mb/s and one time it said it was connected at 54mb/s. The problem is that when I go into Firefox and type in a url (such as www.yahoo.com) I see a message at the bottom of the screen saying "Looking Up Yahoo and then it does nothing for several minutes. Then I get a pop-up box that says "Server Not Found".

I've tried so many things to get it to see Debian. I tried the super grub 2 disc on a CD and on a flash drive via unetbootin. Neither worked successfully like the site showed. I tried chrooting from a Ubuntu Live CD, I did update-grub grub-mkconfig, grub-install to each of my hard drives and even tried upgrade-from-grub-legacy (even though it's already upgraded from grub legacy)!
If I recall correctly, the super grub 2 disc says something about an error with the filesystem so I'm guessing this has to do with the fact that I'm using ext4 on my Debian Squeeze installation?

I thought I knew my way around a little, but apparently mounting is still a complete mystery to me. I'm trying to back up my data with Knoppix since Ubuntu won't start up. something weird is happening with the keyboard and it starts spamming ^[[26~ across the splash screen. When I try to read my hard drive, Knoppix tells me "mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock." It seems like it should be a pretty common error, but I haven't found any anything helpful and understandable that doesn't involve rebooting (won't get me anywhere with Knoppix). I think it has something to do with Knoppix insisting my drive is hda instead of sda, though I have read that Ubuntu likes to tell you hda is sda anyway. Knoppix is the only distro that has worked on a live boot so far.I've thought of trying dd, dd rescue, or just cp onto my external, but I don't know if Knoppix's hda business will make a working backup. The other computers around are all Windows with no extra space, so I don't know what the easiest and safest way is to test wether the back up worked.
