Hardware :: Lost Sound And Laptop Trackpad After Ubuntu Upgrade?

Everything was working when I was on Ubuntu 9.04 but after I upgraded to 9.10 via their upgrade utility. The upgrade failed at the last point of installation (when it tried to install daemon I think). Nevertheless, after the reboot I was on ubuntu 9.10. But the sound stopped working as well as the mouse trackpad on my laptop. I remember that during the installation when it asked if I wanted to keep the old sound configuration file, I clicked yes. So is there I way to fix/reinstall the sound driver and the tackpad? In the sound hardware setting window, no device is listed. I'm pretty sure that my hardwares work on ubuntu 9.10 as the sound and trackpad work fine using the ubuntu 9.10 live CD.

I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.

I'm running 32bit Lenny on an older Dell Dimension 2400 running the 2.6.26 Kernel. This box was mainly used to play movies for my son over the network (most are encoded by me using xvid and lame). One of my kids wanted to use the computer to watch videos on ...... I attempted to install the flashplugin-nonfree from the backports and it kept timing out on downloading the package, so I ran apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade. I rebooted and tried the flashplugin-nonfree again and finally got ..... videos to play but there was no sound. I assumed it was a permission issue, so I switched users and attempted to play some of the movies which I've played before and currently the video plays fine but the audio sounds very ugly. I attempted to play an mp3 using mpg123 from the command line and I get mostly static. You can hear some sound but it's all jumbled and there is a lot of static. I have a creative soundblaster card using the EMU10k1 driver. Everything was working fine before I started mucking with the flashplugin and I'm afraid something I "upgraded" may have caused my issue.
Any suggestions? Is there a way I can remove any sound related drivers etc and attempt to reinstall them? I attempted to run sudo alsaconf but afterwards, it acts like there is no sound card. a reboot resolves that issue as I didn't save any changes, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I've become spoiled by all of the newer distros which detect all of my hardware and everything is configured for me.

I've just done an upgrade after noticing the Update manager thingee at the bottom of the screen. I was listening to my music when I noticed it.
I did the Restart now after upgrading. Now I have no sound at all. Checked headphones were turned up which they were. Checked sound settings and found there were no Devices in Hardware and Input and a Dummy Output (stereo) listed in Output. I would have thought that my onboard sound would have shown up as well as the sound bits on my HDMI card - not that I've ever managed to get sound out of my telly via the HDMI cable. (I do have Alsa sound installed).

I have just upgraded to Fedora 14, with some hope that a F13 kernel crash issue would be resolved. Alas, not, and I have lost audio in one of my sound cards. I am using 2 sound cards in my computer. The first one (VT 1708 on the M2V MX SE motherboard) is used for FLDIGI (ham radio program). The other one (Creative Labs SB Live!) is tied to a speaker/microphone. At some point in mid 2010, I started getting kernel crash reports (not sure which kernel version this started), and the VIA VT 1708 audio controller stopped working. The SB Live! card works fine.

I upgraded to Lucid a week or two ago. Sound has worked fine, then suddenly, yesterday, I have no sound for any application. The Gnome sound applet shows the volume normally, and have the Mute All option greyed out (not selectable). Nothing stands out as wrong or unusual under sound preferences, and I didn't change anything, although I did recently install a set of updates. There is no physical mute button on this laptop. IT is not account-specific, there are no sound effects even before you log in.
As well, since the upgrade I have intermittently not had the networking icon in the notification area appear, it is covered over by a fragment of some other graphic. It is most usable with the Human these, it is completely unusable with any of the new themes. Anyone know a fix for either of these two issues, especially the first?
Finding Lucid extremely flaky, particularly the signature themes. I like some aspects of it, such as the fact the wireless button on my laptop works now, but overall, not an impressive effort - someone whose first introduction to Ubuntu is Lucid and sees that the notification area doesn't even work correctly is not likely to stick around.

My keboard was working perfectly (backlight, inverse FN) until upgrade from karmic to lucid. Now neither backlight neither inverting FN (in pommed.conf) works- backlight is always off, FN is default OSX-like.
Trackpad worked "almost superb" (missing click with one finger and drag with another!!) but after upgrade (=no mode udev) event number changes with every reboot so I cannot put configuration based on /dev/input/eventX to Xorg.conf. How can I make it have the same number after reboot now?

I don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

All of a sudden, my elderly laptop keyboard lost its ability to reproduce the GBP symbol in text when using the normal Shift 3 combination. All the other Shift Number symbols are fine. I have looked at System-Preferences-Keyboard and have tried to select 102, 104 & 105 UK versions but all give the same response. It is not a case of a US version creeping in nor the alternative of the Euro sign. All I get is the figure 3. I have also looked at dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg which does not help either.
Now I get a sort of error message on the desktop suggesting an XKB Config malfunction and quotes an X.Org Foundation 10400090 reference number which is meaningless to me. The page also recommends sending the output of the following, if a bug report is to be made, Xprop -root- grep XKB and gconfigtool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd.
All this is above my head so if any Bright Spark out there can tell me how to proceed this bunny will be very happy. I sincerely hope that it is software and not a dodgy keyboard, I do not want to loose a dear friend!

My latop has suddenly lost it's ability to see my main computer. I have changed nothing other than updates and a few non-network related program installs. The laptop is an HP Pavillion DM3 running 10.10 and the PC is a Dell XPS400 running 10.04.01. I have both Samba and folder sharing in use. I have checked all the permissions etc on the shares and in Samba and everything is as it was and should be. So I am confused. How do I get it back and why did it go away?

I just dropped my laptop while it was on. It is a dual boot vista and Ubuntu machine (9.04) and Ubuntu was running at the time. The machine didn't go down and after I got done using it I shut it down normally. Now it will not come back up because grub is saying there is something wrong with the disk geometry. It did give me a command line, I forgot the exact error message but I can look it up if needed.
I tried plugging the hard drive into a different machine under a live cd but everything was in the lost and found folder (80 GB) and the folder was unreadable. I backed up the windows partition successfully using windows explorer and now have been looking at testdisk and Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery ($80) for the Linux partition. I don't know if it is ext3 or ext4, I may have bumped it up to ext4 from the default ext3 during the install. Also a few files on the windows partition were unreadable, so the disk definitely has some physical damage. I'm getting a new one along with a back up system for sure after all this is over.
I got tired of figuring out testdisk so I let the paid app run its free test overnight to see if I could recovery anything before I bought it, but it got hung up on a sector halfway through.
Going forward I think I will try Photorec next and then testdisk again if that doesn't work. Does Photorec get almost all the normal office (doc xls), music (mp3) and video files (mp4) not just pictures?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 6930 with an nVidia GeForce 9300m GS hooked up to my LG TV via HDMI.I have used the nVidia configuration tool to set the TV as a clone of my desktop and all appears to be working fine except for one thing.When I close my laptop lid, the TV also blanks.I know I could turn off my laptop monitor from within the nVidia config tool, but that is not what I want to do as I still use it; and besides, it's inconvenient to have to do it all the time.

I think I've lost my MBR upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During the upgrade it gave me a message saying which partitions did I want the grub details to go on, saying if I was unsure to select all of them. The startup sound just desappeared. The Gnome Login Sound is still on the list of starting programs and the command is right (/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play id=desktop-login description=GNOME Login). What makes it more weird is, that it works fine on all other users. I started to suffer from this problem since I tried to change the sound (I have done it before with no problems). At the same time with changing the startup sound I installed PulseAudio volume control. Could these things have something doing with my startup sound desappearence?

I have connected the PC to an amplifier via optical cable. Everything was working fine. Suddenly, I lost sound! The last things I was doing was extracting some CDs by Sound Juicer and I installed a program named setcd. I thought it was the new software conflicting, so I uninstalled it. However, still no sound. I upgraded to Maverick things generally went well - but I noticed TWO sound controls and removed one - later after a reboot I no longer have any. It will appear once I click on System/Preferences/Sound, but otherwise it doesn't show up on the desktop bar. I checked under the Add to Panel feature but no luck - any ideas how to get it back?
