Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 8.10 To 9.04 Killed Laptop?

Feb 11, 2010

I have an ancient laptop, an IBM T-20 with a Pentium 3 and 250 megs of RAM, which works great for blogging and email. I have used Ubuntu on it for nearly four years now. Last night I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 and now it won't get to the log-in screen. The BIOS splash screen appears, then the GRUB screen, then the Ubuntu trademark screen appears, with the horizontal progress indicator scrolling from left to right. And when it gets all the way to the right, the screen goes blank. Then the screen flashes twice, as if it's trying to display in a resolution it doesn't support, and then it goes blank again. The HD activity light flashes about every five seconds and the keyboard is unresponsive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade Killed All Drivers?

Please advise:
A) What to do next?
B) Where in the Ubuntu bugs do I open this bug?

Ive tried Shift+alt+f7, ctrl+alt+f1 and pressing shift on startup. Im running in the live CD environment at the moment

Ubuntu :: System Killed My Laptop / Get It To Work?

Jun 18, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m. I've been running Ubuntu since 2008. Every time I re-install the O.S. I have to alter the video driver. When 10.04 was released it crashed the system and I couldn't figure out how to fix it so I left Karmic on and all was well. Well the DVD/CD drive never worked right under Karmic but no big deal.

Anyway, last week I attempted an upgrade. Everything went fine until upgrade finished and it was time to reboot.

Reboot hung, so I ended up killing the power and doing a cold boot.
Now when booting from the hard drive, I get a brief flash of the Ubuntu welcome screen (in the wrong resolution) and then things die. I'm left looking at a grey curser in the upper left.

Worse yet, I can't boot from a live CD or USB. Neither, Ubuntu, openSUSE or Puppy Linux will boot from CD or from USB.

I double checked my boot order in the BIOS and still nothing boots. I reset the BIOS to factory Default, still nothing boots. I disabled the hard-drive in the boot up order in the bios and still nothing boots.

I can't figure out what happened and I can't access the machine at all exepet to enter the BIOS.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Upgrade Killed Raid5 Md Array?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm a bit sick to my stomach right now. I had a raid5 array (5x1.5TB drives) and I upgraded to lucid and now the array no longer works. Initially, on boot, it would try to mount it from fstab and that failed consistently as it wasn't assembling it.

then I tried to assemble it by hand (--scan) and that seemed to cause it to mount degraded (it seems md in the process tried to use on of the disks for something else!), but when I look at its partition table, it's empty. pretty pissed at the moment (somewhat at myself, didn't really need to upgrade), any ideas what went wrong?

Fedora :: Upgrade To F 11 Killed Screenlets?

Dec 27, 2009

I had screenlets working Just Fine on F 10, but it hit EOL so I used preupgrade to move to F 11. Now, I can't get them working no matter what I do. If I try to run screenlets-manager from a terminal I get this message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/screenlets-manager/screenlets-manager.py", line 28, in <module>

ImportError: No module named screenlets

And, I can't reinstall them because they require python-dateutil which doesn't seem to have a version for F 11. I even tried downloading the tarball and running setup.py, but it crashed because it tries to import a module that doesn't exist.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Locks Up After Upgrade To 10.04

May 1, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 via Update Manager. Upon reboot after the upgrade, I only got as far as the log-on sound and the laptop locked up. Even the power button was unresponsive, so I had to unplug the laptop and let the battery run out to get the thing turned off. I then tried doing a clean install from the CD, but got the same lock-up problem afterwards. I finally had to do a clean reinstallation of 9.10. I am using a Sony PCG-GRT240G Notebook. Are there any steps I can take to get 10.04 to work flawlessly? To get 9.10 to work flawlessly, all I had to do was boot with the noapic parameter.

Fedora Installation :: 10 Upgrade / Installation Failing On Presario F700 Laptop

May 29, 2009

I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -

1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm

2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm

im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Keyboard Not Recognised On Upgrade 9 To 10?

May 16, 2010

I tried to use the automatic upgrade to version 10 last night on my Acer Aspire 8930G. Everything seemed to work fine until I got to the reboot. At the reboot it tells me that it is running in low resolution mode because the nvidia drivers have been removed. That is fine except I cannot hit the enter button to accept the message either using the laptop keyboard or by restarting and using a USB keyboard.

I have a dual boot with windows and I'm averse to just reinstalling ubuntu because there is some data which would be annoying to lose.

I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Hangs After 10.4 Upgrade From 9.10 On Toshiba Laptop?

Sep 12, 2010

I just used Update Manager to upgrade to 10.4 and all I get is the Ubuntu logo screen with the dots and then the screen goes black and there's no other response. This happened after the upgrade completed installing and I received the message to restart the computer. I have never been able to get it to boot.

I can boot fine by selecting the next older kernal although I do get some messages that I don't understand. It all works so I presume it's OK. The kernal that was installed with the upgrade is 2.6.32-24-generic and I've seen other posts about boot problems with it. The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Windows boots normally. I saw a suggestion on another thread about booting into an older kernal and then issuing the sudo update-intramfs -u -k command. I tried it and it didn't help.

Next I tried 2.6.32-24-generic recovery mode and I tried the option to fix damaged packages. It seemed to do something although I saw error messages about not being able to find various software sources. I tried a normal boot afterwards and same problem. Recovery mode has another menu option about repairing grub but I don't want to try that. I'm not a power user and this is all over my head. Before I turn the laptop into an unusable door stop,

Ubuntu Installation :: Killed Kubuntu Install When Trying KDE 4.4.2 Can I Fix It?

Apr 2, 2010

Long story short my roommate has been using KDE 4.4.2 for a few weeks and enjoying it, so I figured I would give it a shot when I saw this on the Kubuntu front page. I added ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports to my software sources and asked kpackage kit to look for updates, it found a bunch, plus around 25 blocked updates. I figured they were blocked because they depended on some other update I was about to install. I told it to start updates and left it on its own for a while. About halfway through KDE crash handler popped up saying the network manager crashed, so I told it to restart, plugged into my wired connection, and continued updates. Once it finished, their were still 25 blocked updates to I figured a restart was in order. Once I restart I get to the log in screen, log in, and then I am prompted with this message by the KDE Crash Handler:

Ubuntu Installation :: Security Updates Killed Fresh Install?

Jul 7, 2010

I'm completely new to Ubuntu and only installed yesterday for the first time. The install worked fine. After booting it asked me to install updates. I did this and now when I boot i get:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: ls /dev)

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/blah blah does not exist. Dropping to a shell Now I've tried searching through the forums and I've seen people with similar problems however none of the solutions suggested to them have worked. The only thing that may work if it is explained to me how to do it is in Grub 2 it is looking for a UUID. Now I tried editing this on startup to /dev/sda5 instead and it loads. Only thing is I read that this is temporary and would have to do it each time which means it's a workaround not a solution. As I explained at the start, first time of using Ubuntu and so far haven't been particularly impressed as I have another problem with the processor being used up by loads of 'udevd

Debian Installation :: LUKS On Root Killed By Apt-get Update

Sep 24, 2015

Root LUKS to be broken by apt-get update? This did happen to me on 3 different laptops, both on previous install (from Debian 8.0), and also on clean installs (Debian 8.1), repeatedly.

When I reboot, grub starts, but then it cannot find the root file system (I end up with the emergency console).

Code: Select allLoading Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
Loading, please wait...
[many seconds waiting]
ALERT! /dev/mapper/sda2_crypt does not exists.
modprobe: modprobe ehci-orion not found in modules.dep

This is the most simple, clean, conservative install ever, no closed driver.

But LUKS on the root file system:

Code: Select allone ext4 partition on /boot
one ext4 partition on / (trough LUKS, all defaults)

There is no LVM.

All the 3 laptops killed at different time, when updating. Clean install is fine until the first update.

Booting on the rescue system allows me to see everything.

Code: Select all$ update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found background image: /usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-4-amd64
No volume groups found

How can I recover from this?

Fedora Installation :: Additional Firmware Required Killed F12?

Nov 22, 2009

While doing some basic tweaks, nautilus, panel, display etc I got a pop-up: Additional Firmware Required "to make hardware in this computer function correctly". No more detail than that. Like signing a blank check so I said "go for it". When I rebooted the display was hosed. Like the refresh rate was wrong. So off to xorg.conf to fix it. There is no xorg.conf. After four hours of searching forums and google I gave up and reinstalled (only an hour). This time I made a backup (cp -a) before letting F12 fix the non-existent problem. Tried again very carefully to be sure that what killed the display was the additional firmware. True. That kills my display. Only problem is the backup cp -a when copied back in would boot but would not let me log in!? I could boot "single" change the password, but it said that was already the password.

for me F12 is a "one-day-distro". I have multiple partitions with Ubuntu, Mandriva, SuSE, Slitaz ... My first Linux was Fedora Core 4 and I will try the next Fedora release. For now back to Ubuntu 9.04. I'm still testing 9.10. My graphics is on-board Intel. I think it's 965G chipset. This is a Dell E520N. How would I tell what not to do that firmware addition?

Ubuntu :: Should I Upgrade From 8.04 On Old Laptop?

Dec 28, 2010

One of my two laptops is a P-III at 800 mhz and 1 Gig memory running Ubuntu 8.04.This runs very well.I'd like to upgrade to 10.04 LTS because I like to stay current with the LTS releases but I wonder if maybe it will run too slow on this old computer.

1. Upgrade to 10.04 ?
2. Change over to Lubuntu 10.04 ?
3. Or just stick with 8.04 figuring it works and this laptop is too slow for something newer

I've tested both Ubuntu 10.04 and Lubuntu 10.04 from Live CDs but with a lot of CD I/O it's hard to judge whether these would run satisfactorily from the hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive does not have sufficient space to co-install 10.04 with 8.04 for a parallel test.

Ubuntu :: No Sound On HP G50 Laptop After Lucid Upgrade?

May 20, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid a week or two ago. Sound has worked fine, then suddenly, yesterday, I have no sound for any application. The Gnome sound applet shows the volume normally, and have the Mute All option greyed out (not selectable). Nothing stands out as wrong or unusual under sound preferences, and I didn't change anything, although I did recently install a set of updates. There is no physical mute button on this laptop. IT is not account-specific, there are no sound effects even before you log in.

As well, since the upgrade I have intermittently not had the networking icon in the notification area appear, it is covered over by a fragment of some other graphic. It is most usable with the Human these, it is completely unusable with any of the new themes. Anyone know a fix for either of these two issues, especially the first?

Finding Lucid extremely flaky, particularly the signature themes. I like some aspects of it, such as the fact the wireless button on my laptop works now, but overall, not an impressive effort - someone whose first introduction to Ubuntu is Lucid and sees that the notification area doesn't even work correctly is not likely to stick around.
