I was upgrading from 10 to 11 and the laptop battery died during the installation (it was accidentally unplugged). Can I recover or do I need to do a complete install?
View 2 RepliesI just attempted to upgrade my laptop from F11 to F13 using yum according to the instructions here. Everything seemed to go fine - the download and install took about an hour - but upon reboot it appears that all of my packages are still fc11 packages. It looks like I got the updates in the F11 repos but not an actual upgrade to F13.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -
1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm
2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm
im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.
my laptop is shutting down after i type in the password to start the upgrade.

same thing is happening when i start synaptic.
as a normal user when I click logout from a KDE session nothing happens and I can't re-launch logout again, shutdown is doing the same.I have just upgraded to fc14 from fc13 yesterday tried to delete .kde folder and it has not been succesful tried to create another user and log to kde session and the new user also failed to logout or shutdown Root user is able to logout and shutdown I have no probs on GNOME for root or users.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.
Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.
I have an ancient laptop, an IBM T-20 with a Pentium 3 and 250 megs of RAM, which works great for blogging and email. I have used Ubuntu on it for nearly four years now. Last night I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 and now it won't get to the log-in screen. The BIOS splash screen appears, then the GRUB screen, then the Ubuntu trademark screen appears, with the horizontal progress indicator scrolling from left to right. And when it gets all the way to the right, the screen goes blank. Then the screen flashes twice, as if it's trying to display in a resolution it doesn't support, and then it goes blank again. The HD activity light flashes about every five seconds and the keyboard is unresponsive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 via Update Manager. Upon reboot after the upgrade, I only got as far as the log-on sound and the laptop locked up. Even the power button was unresponsive, so I had to unplug the laptop and let the battery run out to get the thing turned off. I then tried doing a clean install from the CD, but got the same lock-up problem afterwards. I finally had to do a clean reinstallation of 9.10. I am using a Sony PCG-GRT240G Notebook. Are there any steps I can take to get 10.04 to work flawlessly? To get 9.10 to work flawlessly, all I had to do was boot with the noapic parameter.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to use the automatic upgrade to version 10 last night on my Acer Aspire 8930G. Everything seemed to work fine until I got to the reboot. At the reboot it tells me that it is running in low resolution mode because the nvidia drivers have been removed. That is fine except I cannot hit the enter button to accept the message either using the laptop keyboard or by restarting and using a USB keyboard.
I have a dual boot with windows and I'm averse to just reinstalling ubuntu because there is some data which would be annoying to lose.
I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just used Update Manager to upgrade to 10.4 and all I get is the Ubuntu logo screen with the dots and then the screen goes black and there's no other response. This happened after the upgrade completed installing and I received the message to restart the computer. I have never been able to get it to boot.
I can boot fine by selecting the next older kernal although I do get some messages that I don't understand. It all works so I presume it's OK. The kernal that was installed with the upgrade is 2.6.32-24-generic and I've seen other posts about boot problems with it. The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Windows boots normally. I saw a suggestion on another thread about booting into an older kernal and then issuing the sudo update-intramfs -u -k command. I tried it and it didn't help.
Next I tried 2.6.32-24-generic recovery mode and I tried the option to fix damaged packages. It seemed to do something although I saw error messages about not being able to find various software sources. I tried a normal boot afterwards and same problem. Recovery mode has another menu option about repairing grub but I don't want to try that. I'm not a power user and this is all over my head. Before I turn the laptop into an unusable door stop,

Basically I click it and it pops up with the 30 second count down and then nothing. However I can run as root,

and it will comply and reboot. I did notice that rngd was returning an exit status 1 and after some research decided to uninstall it with no change to anything. I decided to attempt and see if it was just a KDE issue as many problems have been, but when I attempted to log into Gnome I got a very nice white screen with one black line where the taskbar should be. Whether they are related or just coincidence I don't know.
I've ran my google researching skills into the ground on this one and I'm tired and a bit grumpy because I haven't been sleeping so it'd be awesome if I could get a heads up, because to my knowledge it's not reporting any errors it just seems to hang without sending the shutdown signals.
When running Jaunty, I could press the power button and my laptop turned off. Now in Karmic, I am all the time asked to provide my password when shutting down. I am the only user. Can this be changed?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old lap top thats in good nick and I installed 10.10 on it. I had only used 10.9 before on my other old and rubbish acer. On 10.10 I have a problem where when I unplug the charger the computer boots down instantly. However, unlike all the treads I have seen, my computer can be re-started and run off battery for hours with no problem. I have mentioned this just now on the hardware thread but I don't see how its a hardware problem so I thought I should put it here.I also have a problem with the wireless/Internet becoming disabled after it goes to sleep. Only way to solve it is to restart it. I have checked the options in my inexpert way but have found no command to provoke such behavior. Has anyone tried re-booting when their "battery dies" after charger removed?

However I'd like it to automatically "shutdown -h NOW" when I remove the AC plug (switch it off at the wall). My Toshiba A300 laptop turns itself on after about 4 minutes from the shutdown. This doesn't happen with Win7. When it turns on, I shutdown using the power off button and it doesn't turn on again. I disabled all the wake options in the BIOS, also I uninstalled the ACPI, but this did not help. I also disabled the WOL in Ubuntu with "sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol d" before the shutdown, but this didn't helped too.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make my system automatically shutdown once the battery level is low, but still without success. I've tried kpowersave, gnome-power-manager, kpower, klaptop but none of these worked for me. Well, I can't imagine I would be that stupid, but simply it doesn't work. In all cases mentioned above (kpower, klaptop, gnome-power-manager) I've tried to setup the laptop to shutdown once the defined level is reached, but the laptop never actually switched off unless all the battery was drained.
Btw. I think all the above mentioned apps only work once the user is logged in. But I'd like the solution to work also when the PC is on without anyone logged in. I thought I could write a bash script based on parsing of acpitools output and define it as a service, which would monitor the battery level, but I simply don't believe there isn't any functional solution to this.
I have a weird problem, i have an LG LCD screen that i connect to my laptop via HDMI through nVidia. I was watching full length movies and everything worked perfectly. So, i got myself a new, slightly bigger LG LCD, and now, when I play a movie, about 20-60 minutes into the movie, my machine just turns off. doesnt even shutdown properly, just turns itself off, as if the power ran out (which it didnt..)
I thought maybe i had too many things installed, or mabe i should wait for a new version.. so i waited till i reinstalled a fresh 10.4 on a new partition, played a movie, and again, the machine just suddenly turned itself off.
i tried looking in the system log viewer, but between shutdown and startup, i see nothing special (besides ALOT of "rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS returned, data->length = 105")..
i tried running 64bit & 32bit and it has the same error.
I installed Tweetdeck. I stick the icon on the launcher. However, when I restart/shutdown my laptop, the icon is no longer in the launcher. So I have to go to opt/tweetdeck/bin to start the application. regarding the issue? Why does the Tweetdeck icon keeps on missing on the launcher everytime I start my Ubuntu. By the way I am using Ubuntu 11.04.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer, a four year old HP Pavilion dv2000 running with Ubuntu 9.10 since half a year ago, sometimes shut downs and sometimes gets me to a black screen where I can read in the first line: �Ubuntu 9.10 pablo-laptop tty1� and in the second line: �login pablo-laptop:�. Sometimes (only) it allows me to log in, taking me to the login screen that appears after switching on the computer. After logging in on that screen it initiates the computer but all the programs I had opened are closed and I have lost the information. This has been happening to me since long ago but never asked in forums. It is quite annoying and I would be happy to solve it.

I don't follow why the Suspend option is there and the Reboot and Shutdown is not. Can anyone guide me to the code needed to add the selections. I know I can use a Terminal to shutdown or reboot but a simpler solution would be nice. I expect there are methods to fix most of what I don't like about Gnome 3 but I haven't found them yet. Is there a central place for the solutions needed to deminimalize Gnome 3? I really prefer one click control.

Everything works fine except that under KDE menu if I click on 'shutdown', I have the confirmation windows but the computer never shutdown. Same issue with the the logout button. If I want to stop my commuter I have to open a terminal and type " shutdown now" or "halt".

This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.
