I have installed Ubuntu via USB on a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I am unable to turn on the wireless card. I have a dual boot with Windows XP and I am able to turn on the card with keystroke Function/F2 and it works while in Windows. When I reboot in Ubuntu I am not able to use these keystrokes to turn on the card.

I have an HP Compaq 6735s with a Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g draft-n wireless card that I've been running 9.10 (the karmic koala one I think it was called) on for the past 7 or 8 months (been running Ubuntu in general for the last couple years). The card won't turn on--the indicator light is always orange, not blue as it should be. I thought it might be a hardware problem so I took it to a shop, but they tested it several times and said the card was fine and that upgrading my software should solve the problem.
I just upgraded it to the 10.10 distro (usually a friend did my upgrades for me but alas that's no longer an option) but that has not fixed it. I thought to try and re-download the Broadcom drivers on a different computer, then transfer them to my laptop, but when I did that and tried to open the .exe file, a message popped up saying the file was no good. (Can you tell I'm not a computer pro yet? Haha) Any idea how I could fix this or what the problem might be? I'm really frustrated as it's been an issue for the last six months, plus this is my only computer and I need it to function fully for purposes of finding a job, etc. If I could I'd just buy a different computer at this point (really disappointed with HP laptops in general) but sadly that's not an option. I'm to the point where I'd consider running Windows again just to make the damn thing work.
First of all, trying to install it was a disaster as it tried to format my DVD drive and I was forced to delete my Windows partitions too. That's not why I'm writing, just thought I'd mention that I was already frustrated to begin with
Anyway, I have an HP G62-340US laptop. Everything seems to be running great except that I cannot turn on my wireless. The laptop has a key on the keyboard to power up the wifi and it's permanently off. Not sure if this is an issue with the keyboard driver, but pressing the wifi key does nothing.
I've tried scanning the hardware to determine what wifi device I have, but since it's not powered up, Linux doesn't even see it.
Any ideas which direction I should look?
As a side note, I have used Linux fairly regularly for several years. Mostly Ubuntu, LinuxMint and PinguyOS (all debian-based). So I'm not a complete newbie and am perfectly comfortable with the command line and configuration files.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.
The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

The funny thing is that it works fine in a Fedora installation, which has an older kernel and older drivers, on the same laptop. The fact that the indicator light doesn't come in when the physical switch is turned on suggests it's something to do with that switch.

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my MP Mini 1000 and I have run into some troubles.First off, my wireless card doesn't seem to work out of the box. I figured that I would just plug into my router via ethernet and run updates, but then I ran into my next problem.
Nothing happens when I plug in an ethernet cord. I have a desktop running Windows 7 and a jumpdrive, so I can use those to get the files I need, but I don't really know how to fix this issue.I believe my wireless card is a Broadcom 4312, but I am unsure what ethernet card I have. If possible, I would like to just get the ethernet working and then let the restricted drivers manager take care of the rest.
I just did a new install of slack 13.1 and i cant seem to be able to get my wireless card up. my system is a new ish dell laptop,a vostro 3700 to be honest im not even really sure where to start here. if i ifconfig i only get my ethernet and my loopback and if i "iwconfig" i just get told that i have no wireless extensions. yeah not sure what else to add.

However, my fresh- installed Fedora12 cannot see any wifi at all. I my NetworkManager I can see a single line with "eth0" which seems to refer to a normal (cable) connection. How to activate wifi? Just add a new line with eth1 and Wireless connection? Or I need to install some drivers?

I have been running F13 since it came out, with the wireless working fine since I got it working (using the RPM Fusion repository, broadcom-wl-5.60.48.36-1.fc13). Since I updated software (without reading what was to be updated), yesterday, I am unable to even find wireless networks, although I am, as you can see, able to access through eth0 It is not a hardware problem, as I can not only find them, but access them on Ubuntu 9.10 live disc. This morning I installed Fedora 14 on my laptop. During the setup, I was able to configure the wireless connection and use it to install additional software from the FreshRPMs and Livna repos. When the install was completed, I was surprised to find the wireless not working. When I click on the NetworkManager icon at the bottom right corner, I see "Wireless Networks" Under that it says "device not ready" and it is greyed out so it cannot be click on.

I am getting obsessed with Linux OS up to the point of starting to swap MS OS.I opened WICD and it show (Wired network = 0 wired-default VVV and wireless network = C STR ESSID ENCRYPT BSSID MODE CHNL is this meaning that build in wireless card is or is not recognized? I will keep looking for info, although is hard to learn a new OS from scratch.

Unfortunately I can't get either method to work on my Fedora 11 installation. I don't mean that I complete the steps only to find it doesn't work, I mean I can't even complete the required steps because I appear to be doing something wrong or be missing a crucial command tool.When I try to run the broadcom method I get as far as the make (or make clean) commands.

If I try the other method I get into problems when I get to the ndiswrapper section as the install can't find ndiswrapper-common.
I can not install a driver for device EDUP WU2070. I have a disk with a driver for linux general. I don't know how to compile a makefile. My OS 11.3v doesn't see a device.
But when I run in Live CD mode all drivers install automatically and my WI-FI device work properly.
installing the PCI wireless card drivers in CentOS linux. I have "Sabrent PCI-G802 PCI Wireless Card - 54Mbps, 802.11g". I tried looking in google and tried multiple ways to install the driver but failed , I have followed the instructions given in the link i.e.
performed the following steps .....
1.# tar xvzf package.tar.gz (or tar xvjf package.tar.bz2)
2.# cd package
3.# ./configure
4.# make
5.# make install
I have the original cd (this cd has linux drivers also) which came with the PCI card but its not a plug and play cd like the MS windows, the cd drive is not reading the disk (But i can open it in windows 7). I copied the installation files from the cd to usb drive on my windows 7 PC and copied them on to the CentOS /home/user directory and performed the above mentioned steps. I was successful in getting till the second step. when i did the step 3 the system is asking some thing about

I just pressed the enter button and it went to the next message which is

I have got a netgear wireless PC Card WG511 made in Taiwan (not china). I have intalled it in windows w/acouple of ver. Settling on v1. I am first generation pc. maybe toold for Linux? I can't even figure out how to post in the Dam Small Linux website. But have read most of the posts in linux questions. I can't install a wireless card ;<( this is an old laptop and would be like usable if I get the *&^%$ wireless working. In fact, does anyone have a wireless card working with Dam Small Linux? I have the book but, it's not been much help. Other that telling me to add nodhcp in the boot startup. That didn't help either. I have learned alot through this misery of the wireless nic.

I've been trying to get Security Spin up and running (after having tried unsuccessfully with knoppix STD). I need to be able to connect to my home network, or hell any wireless network.I've tried using iwconfig wlan0 as well as the options in the Network Configuration panel as well as other related panels. I'm able to change and set up profiles for the wireless card, but not to activate them. The button just isn't clickable.If it helps, I'm running Security Spin from a unetbootin usb drive. The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

I do have the ability to unload the driver's kernel modules and the sysyem does not see my card after that. That's ok, but i'm thinking it still uses my battery power. The wifi led is always on no matter what i do. The fn+<wifi key> doesn't to anything.
View 8 Replies View RelatedHeres the set up I have: one eeepc running ubuntu netbook. with a usb wifi dongle, this is connected to a parabolic antenna i made out of pizza boxes and tin foil. One fujitsu laptop running ubuntu 10.10. the eee connects to the internet via the dongle. then the laptop connects to the eee. I set this up by using network manager. I created a new wirless connection and called it "UbuntuAdhoc". The on-board card connected to this without issue and the laptop was able to connect to the new wireless broadcast by the eees on-board card.
This worked perfectly untill I rebooted the eee. Now the eee is unable to conect to the internet if the on-board caard is conected to "ubuntuadhoc". also the dongle now wants to conect to "ubuntuadhock" too.
