OpenSUSE Wireless :: Wireless Card Will Not Turn On In 11.4

Aug 15, 2011

First of all, trying to install it was a disaster as it tried to format my DVD drive and I was forced to delete my Windows partitions too. That's not why I'm writing, just thought I'd mention that I was already frustrated to begin with

Anyway, I have an HP G62-340US laptop. Everything seems to be running great except that I cannot turn on my wireless. The laptop has a key on the keyboard to power up the wifi and it's permanently off. Not sure if this is an issue with the keyboard driver, but pressing the wifi key does nothing.

I've tried scanning the hardware to determine what wifi device I have, but since it's not powered up, Linux doesn't even see it.

Any ideas which direction I should look?

As a side note, I have used Linux fairly regularly for several years. Mostly Ubuntu, LinuxMint and PinguyOS (all debian-based). So I'm not a complete newbie and am perfectly comfortable with the command line and configuration files.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Turn On Wifi On The Dell Studio 15?

Apr 10, 2010

I just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.

[You can see the keyboard shape here]

On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.

I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Dell Latitude E6500 Cannot Turn On Intel 5100 Wifi Card?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 running Opensuse 11.3. As far as I can tell the module for my wireless card is loaded correctly and it's working:

Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i wifi
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100
Code:
[ 556.642557] iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, in-tree:d
[ 556.642560] iwlagn: Copyright(c) 2003-2010 Intel Corporation

[Code].....

The funny thing is that it works fine in a Fedora installation, which has an older kernel and older drivers, on the same laptop. The fact that the indicator light doesn't come in when the physical switch is turned on suggests it's something to do with that switch.

Networking :: Not Getting IP When N/w Cable Plugged In

Dec 23, 2009

I am working on h/w device having linux kernel version 2.6.27 with busybox installed. I observed below problems while working on jffs2 image is flashed on the board.

1)When the board is powered-up with n/w cable is connected, it doesn't get IP address automatically, I have to use "/etc/init.d/networking restart" in init script(/etc/init.d/rcS) to get the IP address.(I am using dynamic addressing)

2)When the board is powered-up with n/w cable is unplugged and plugging-in once the device is started, I get "link up" message from the system, but still the IP is missing in eth0 interface.

I have udhcpc(v1.14.1) installed. Giving below commands manually, get the IP for device:

Code:
ifdown eth0
/etc/init.d/networking restart
but It is not pretty solution for me !

What I want is, the device should get IP address automatically once the n/w cable is plugged-in. (as we get in desktop m/c's). Am I missing some scripts or configuration parameters?

Ubuntu :: Wireless Dongle - Plugged Into My Car PC - Not Recognised

Feb 27, 2011

I have 2 computers, both running Ubuntu 10.10. I purchased a TP-LINK Wireless Adaptor model number: TL-WN321G

On my main computer (Acer Laptop) I plugged the dongle into the usb port and Ubuntu picked it up straight away and connected, so it worked straight from the box.

I bought the dongle for my car PC, running Ubuntu 10.10. I then plugged the dongle into my car PC, but nothing, it was not recognised. Even though Ubuntu came bundled with the correct driver files found in /lib/firmware/zd1211 I manually updated them from the latest driver download, but still nothing.

How can I get my dongle to work ? I'm guessing I have missed something, because the dongle worked straight from the box on my laptop.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Dies With No Cable

Apr 15, 2010

I recently installed the vt6656 wireless pci card that came with my zotac motherboard. I can associate with my ap and get an ip address successfully. When I disconnect my ethernet cable, however, my wireless interface stops responding (can't ping it). The box itself is in a place where I don't have a monitor connected to it so I cant see anything since my ssh session gets killed as soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable.

What would be the reason why the ehternet cable being unplugged, disconnects my wifi card as well? Does something get triggered? I did some testing with iptables, blocking the 8080 traffic to the wired interface, and noticed that the 8080 traffic also gets blocked to the wifi ip. I'm afraid that this never worked properly to begin with.

The same thing happens if i try to download an application.. i have to first issue the command to download, and when it says "connecting to blah blah.." i plug the cable back in and it starts downloading, it doesnt work if the cable is already plugged it..!

I am trying to monitor signal the signal level coming down from the satellite. I don't even want to be able to tune to any of the channels. Basically I want to use the PC as a glorified signal meter and datalogger.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Replaces Default Route When Eth Cable Plugged

May 5, 2010

I have been encountering this problem, not only on 10.4, but on older versions too: I use a wifi router to connect my laptop to the Internet, but sometimes I need to connect directly to another computer to move some files over GLAN. But Ubuntu's Network manager doesn't allow me to configure the eth0 interface without specifying a gateway (no gateway = grey submit button), but when a gateway is specified, it always rewrites the default gw specified already by the active wifi connection and returns back after unplugging the eth cable.

Of course this can be solved by a few route commands, but this is unacceptable since it is needed to establish the cable connection without any further assistance from within and as well without replacing the default gw and thus breaking the Internet connection. Is there, please, any possibility how to prevent Network Manager from replacing these routes?
