I run Ubuntu 10.04 & recently installed the Gnome 3 shell. Everything was fine until I fooled around with some preferred settings regarding startup settings. Now I do not have anything but the desktop showing & icons I had previously placed there. I am unable to access anything else except applications that have shortcuts. I would appreciate any assistance to remedy this including how to unintall Gnome 3 if I have no other choice.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just fresh-install upgraded from Jaunty Jackalope to Lucid Lynx, on my dual-boot netbook. Now, the startup menu does appear when I boot up, but only for a fraction of a second! Default bootup is of course, Ubuntu, but since the menu flashes by so fast, there's no way I can access the other choices, including Windoze Expee.So I installed Startup Manager, and set the timeout to 10 seconds. (And to "show text during boot".) Still, the startup menu flashed by, no delay at all, not even a second! Tried setting timeout to 100 seconds, and once more,(Examining grub.cfg shows the timeout was changed to my specs...I just viewed the file.)I searched for bootup problems in ubuntu forums, but did not find any problem similar to mine. My situation seems to be that I simply can't get the startup menu to delay, so I might access it.

For whatever reason, Windows will not get rid of its bootloader and I cannot access my BIOS settings. I've tried spamming every function key that I have when it boots up but nothing happens (if I press ESCAPE when I'm at the boot menu it restarts). Any idea on how to get rid of it and get me my bios back?

Ok basically, ive been trying distro's by installing them on my linux HD, my favourite is ubuntu, but i wanted to see what else is out there so i tried out OpenSUSE, and with suse i unfortantly came across many problems with grub-legacy, and i solved that eventually by changing my boot hard disk in BIOS to the seagate, and installing grub on that Ive never had a grub issue in the past using ubuntu, only with suse Then i decided to go back to ubuntu because everything just works and i like .deb packages, so i installed 10.10 32Bit
Everything went fine, chose default install options, formatted the Seagate drive, and installed to the seagate, HD changedt the boot drive to the western digital in BIOS ( were ubuntu likes to install grub in the past ) booted fine, installed fine, grub showed fine, booted to linux then i went back to windows for a day of gaming and fun, i just rebooted about 30 minutes ago to play with linux, and i cant access the grub menu my pc goes to the POST screen and then were grub should show, i get a blank screen and the pc just reboots to the POST constantly this problem has never happened with ubuntu, ive had 10.10 before, this is all started after removing opensuse
ive tried F8 and booting from both drives, the seagate i just get a white underline for ages and nothing happens and i cant boot to windows on the WD Im currently on my livecd im using the 11.04 livecd, all my cds arent labelled, so i have no idea which is which, i just chucked one in to get a browser, but i gotta say natty 11.04 IS AWSOME
I get this error when trying to access the trash icon from the kickoff menu or from the trashcan widget.BTW, I can access trash via Dolphin or Nautilus though.

Alt is bound to access the first letter of the names in the file menus. This eliminates the Alt+F shortcut to move forward a word. I don't even mind so much if I permanently remove the alt binding to access the file menus.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've noticed in Ubuntu that a lot of applications like to make use of the strip of menus that go at the top of the screen; I think it's called a menu strip in Visual Studios.Anyways, the only way I can see it (that I've figured out thus far) is to drag the window to the top of my screen, thus maximizing it, then use the menu, and put it back.What I want is a less... tedious way of accessing those commands, preferably without changing my window position. Is there a trick to it? In windows, unlike Ubuntu, that strip is available regardless of window size; is there a reason it disappears in my Ubuntu?

All of the sudden LXDE panel and a program called GTK-gnash started eating up all my cpu. So, I stopped the processes and restarted the desktop via CTL-ALT_BACKSPACE and rebooted. Now I cant open anything in the fedora menu, no programs, nothing comes up. Cant find any info on what I should do. Can still run firefox and stuff from applets, just cant access my programs menu.

To compenstate for this i installed gOS to dual boot with Vista. This was working fine but I was recently given a Windows 7 install disk, so I decided to upgrade. Windows seven installed without a problem but now I can't access the GRUB bootloader, windows 7 just loads automatically. I tried to restore it using the Super GRUB Disk usb utility but it didn't work, windows 7 still boots regardless.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu dual-booted with Windows. But whenever I start-up the computer, linux is listed twice! D: Right after I installed it, I was told I needed 200+ MB worth of updates, so I got them, and since then, it's been listed twice in the start-up OS booter thingy. But selecting the one with lower numbers doesn't boot up anything, It just stops at a scary screen with a blinking cursor.
AND, since the beginning, I have never been able to browse folders from the places menu, OR access the Start-up Applications manager. Ubuntu also seems to slow down randomly, and then speed back up. Starting up applications makes it unusually laggy for the period of time that they're starting up, and I'd like to know if Ubuntu is usually so slow on machines like mine...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 (x64) today. I use an LG LCD monitor. After installation, I am unable to see the grub menu. I get a 'D-sub out of range 92.5 kHz / 58 Hz' message on screen instead of grub menu. I know the grub menu is there because, by pressing the 'down' button 5 times and then the 'enter' button I am able to select the windows loader. If I select nothing I am able to log into ubuntu without any display problem.

1)I added an icon named Backtrack.png to /boot/burg/themes
2)modified the /boot/burg/themes/icons/large file to have in the class block
3)modified /etc/burg.d/40_custom for the entry Backtrack to
menuentry "BackTrack 4.0" --class backtrack --class os --group group_/dev/sda7
Still on loading the place for Backtrack is Occupied by the image for Unknown Classes...
