Fedora :: Can't Access Programs Menu

Oct 7, 2009

I have F11 running on an MSI wind. I installed KDE and then downloaded LXDE and have been using it for a few days. All of the sudden LXDE panel and a program called GTK-gnash started eating up all my cpu. So, I stopped the processes and restarted the desktop via CTL-ALT_BACKSPACE and rebooted. Now I cant open anything in the fedora menu, no programs, nothing comes up. Cant find any info on what I should do. Can still run firefox and stuff from applets, just cant access my programs menu.

Fedora :: Menu Bar Missing On A Bunch Of Programs?

Jan 9, 2010

Just upgraded to fc12, noticed that there was no menu bar (the one with "file", "edit", etc....) on my users/groups configuration program, but I figured that it was just a change from fc11. But now I'm noticing more stuff that doesn't have one that ought to (gedit, filezilla, and most importantly, nautilus). On the other hand, firefox does have the menu bar, so it's not a global issue. I have compiz-fusion/emerald, although I'm not sure that would make a difference. I've tried a few different themes thinking it might be the theme I'm using, but no dice.

Fedora :: File Menu Missing In Some Programs?

Jun 15, 2010

I am missing the File menu in many programs (Fedora 13). I found a thread that said this fixed itCode:yum remove gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut I did that and (I'm using audacity to test) it said that it was missing gnome-globalmenu. So I did Code:sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut now audacity is again missing the file menus.

Fedora Networking :: Determine Which Programs Access Internet

Mar 16, 2009

I see from the netspeed applet that my computer is downloading stuff almost constantly. Not a whole lot, 8b - 700b per second while apparently doing nothing. Some of this is just responding to broadcasts from the router, but surely not all. I would like to be able to determine which programs are accessing the internet over that wireless card, with a view to cutting down on my bandwidth usage. Is there a program that can tell me which ones are doing what at a given time?

Ubuntu :: Programs Not Appearing In The Menu After Installation?

Jun 2, 2010

I have an unusual request for help. I asked this question on the Backtrack forums, but they were I have a dualboot of Ubuntu 9.04 and Backtrack 4 on my laptop. Backtrack 4, for those that don't know, is a security penetration testing distro based on Ubuntu with a KDE environment. It basically IS ubuntu, but with some changes, so I figured I'd ask this here. The menu in backtrack has been stripped of it's "Games" folder, as well as some other folders. so when I use "add/remove applications" to install a game it doesn't put a shortcut to it in a Games directory. I tried adding a Games directory to the menu bar myselff, but when I try to install a game, the installer still doesn't see it and put a shortcut there. How can I fix this so that it does?

Ubuntu :: Menu Disappears / Can't Load Programs Fan At 100%

Oct 15, 2010

I've just installed Lubuntu 10.10 to an Asus A2400H laptop. It has a Celeron 2.6 Ghz CPU and 512mb RAM. In the past I have installed Ubuntu and more recently Xubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. This time round I wanted to try out Lubuntu to get more speed out of this laptop but it's giving me crazy problems. When I run the Live CD all seems to work well and quick and there are no problems I can see. Then having installed it -- no errors during install -- when it boots up the fan goes at 100%, the only items on the menu are log off and something else of no use, but neither work. I can't load any of the main programs, but I can get to terminal and the update manager works, although it works extremely slowly.

I typed the 'top' command from the terminal and it says CPU usage is only 35% and only half the memory is in use, and no swap file.I have tried a reinstall and it's exactly the same. I've done the 'check disk for errors' and given the CD lens a clean because sometimes this has caused problems in the past, but it doesn't seem to be the case here given there are no errors during install (I watched the whole install... all 50 minutes of it).I have previously istalled LXDE on this laptop side-by-side with Xubuntu and it did have some fan issues and bugs but still worked for the most part, so I would have thought just having the one system would create less conflict.

OpenSUSE :: Wine - Remove Menu Entries After Uninstalling Programs?

May 26, 2011

The only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

Ubuntu Networking :: Some Programs Cannot Access Internet

May 29, 2010

I have used other distros on and off in the past with no trouble, but for some reason I seem to have had this problem with several versions and flavours of Ubuntu on various systems. I've never solved this problem the previous times I've had it, just given up. But this time I actually need to get this working. I've recently upgraded my computer, so my old system has been relegated to HTPC duties in my lounge. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having issues getting internet access with some programs, while others work fine.

Firefox and Evolution haven't been able to access the internet from the start.Empathy IM has no trouble connecting to my MSN and Facebook accounts.I had no trouble downloading and installing Google Chromium browser through Ubuntu Software Center, and have no trouble accessing the internet with Chromium. On the first boot after the install, Ubuntu automatically told me to update my nVidia drivers online, and did so without error.Update Manager detects updates, but fails to download them.

I successfully and flawlessly downloaded installed XBMC Media Center and some related skins and things through Synaptic, but XBMC cannot access the internet. However it can access shared files over my LAN, including Windows 7 shares.Ubuntu itself cannot access any files on my Windows 7 computer. It can access the work group and see my Win7 shares, but refuses to mount them. Strangely, XBMC can access these shares and stream media from them fine.

Let me see if I can put this coherently: Programs that require super user authentication AFTER they have been launched (for instance,in the time settings applet, you have to sudo authenticate to update the clock, but not just to open the applet. Another instance is Ubuntu-Tweak, which requires admin rights for some of it's functions.)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Programs Want Root Access?

Feb 22, 2011

At least this is what it looks like to me.
Amarok can play music but asks to open kde wallet manager for some password. All other programs (vlc, media player, audacity, etc) seem to function normally but no sound comes out of the speakers. code...

So simply running program requiring sound enabling as root does not work - plus it would not be very good practice, IMHO.

Ubuntu :: Access Mounted SFTP Folder From Within Programs?

Mar 8, 2011

I have a project stored on a university server which I'd like to be able to work on from home.

I already have an SFTP folder set up, which I can access easily in Nautilus, and I can freely copy files back and forth, or open them in e.g. gedit.

However, the project is in Matlab, and I cannot see the mounted SFTP folder from within Matlab. This means that I can't work on the project in Matlab without copying the whole lot across to my local machine when I want to work on it.

Is there some way I can get Matlab to "see" the connection so that I can use the mounted SFTP folder like any other in my filesystem? It appears on my desktop when connected - does it have some other mount location?
