Jun 19, 2010I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

May 4, 2010I am using kubuntu 9.04 dual booting with winXP. The package kit showed that I have 179 bug fixes. So I updated them.Now the boot time grub menu shows 6(two different versions for kubuntu and kubuntu recovery mode) entries instead of usual 4(winXp + kubuntu + kubuntu recovery mode + memtest). My grub.cfg file is as follows:

Oct 14, 2010I recently moved from gnome to xfce in my arch linux box. After I added greek to keyboard layout some applications like skype, openoffice and vlc changed their menus in greek characters. English language but greek characters! Anyone got any idea what can I do with this one?

OpenSUSE :: Application Launcher Changed To Simple Context Menu?
Jun 8, 2011Suddenly the application launcher (the one that pops out when pressing the green chameleon button) has changed and I no longer get the formerly so pretty application launcher. Instead I now get a simple context menu style drop down menu.
I first noticed this after I updated PackageKit. is there a way to get this back to the previous applicationn launcher. When adding just the applet (without the button) it still looks the same, just the button doesn't pop it out anymore, as it chose to pop out a grey drop down instead.
This is on OpenSuse 11.4 KDE 4.5 and the latest desktop kernel

So I am completely locked out of my computer!!I was a overwhelmed by the information I found from searching forums. May 9, 2010I'm running 64bit Lucid. I've recently had a severe problem with my softraid (5) array, and have had to recreate the array to fix it. However this now means that something is up with GRUB/initramfs, and booting times out while waiting for the root device (md0) to be ready. /boot is on a normal partition, not the raid array itself. A friend of mine has rebuilt my initramfs file with the new UUID, but now I get the message: 'Kernel panic not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (9,0)'.So my question is either how do I sort this error, OR how do I rebuild initramfs/grub in a way that will boot?

Jul 25, 2011Vmware tells me it cannot start services.I believe the issue is tied to permissions because the message indicated the log with the full details was located in /tmp/vmware-root/setup-4772.log but when I go there I receive a message telling me I do not have permission to the directory and there's a lock symbol on the directory from the File Browser utility.What do I need to do to unlock the folder and get vmware working again ?

Mar 6, 2010i recently changed my broadband provider and since then i havent been able to connect to the internet. I have configured all the settings on my laptop,(ive got puppy linux 4 on it). All the settings say i have a valid connection to the wireless connection and that its recognised the new provider but when i try to access the internet i get the page that says UNABLE TO CONNECT TO SERVER and it also says that i need to check my network connections etc etc. Ive done all that and it appears that i have everything in the right place. SO WHY wont it connect.

Mar 28, 2010I'm not that great with mailservers, and just been thrown a curveball with a MS Exchange environment for which there is apparently no solution... yeah, right. But is there a workaround?
The problem is that the site mail (SMTP) needs to be sent via port 26 instead of the commonly used 25. Port 25 is mapped to a mailfilter, which apparently causes havoc with some of the mail, and the techs that have been on site trying to coax the Exchange server to co-operate have said that the only way would be to get rid of the filter.
The problem is that there are number of apps that are unable to have the outgoing port changed and so keep sending mail out on port 25.
I look after the Unix/Linux side of things at work, and I was wondering if there was an easy way to set up a Ubuntu box to receive mail on port 25 and just forward it to the MS box on port 26? So, in other words (and I hope this makes sense): monitor port 25, and forward whatever comes in on port 25 to the server on port 26. Simple portforwarding, or is it? What steps do I need to take?

Sep 2, 2010I run Ubuntu 10.04 & recently installed the Gnome 3 shell. Everything was fine until I fooled around with some preferred settings regarding startup settings. Now I do not have anything but the desktop showing & icons I had previously placed there. I am unable to access anything else except applications that have shortcuts. I would appreciate any assistance to remedy this including how to unintall Gnome 3 if I have no other choice.

I get a 'D-sub out of range 92.5 kHz / 58 Hz' message on screen instead of grub menu. I know the grub menu is there because, by pressing the 'down' button 5 times and then the 'enter' button I am able to select the windows loader. If I select nothing I am able to log into ubuntu without any display problem.

I was working with TeamViewer 5 just fine and then saw that TeamViewer 6 was available. I performed a complete removal of TeamViewer 5 via the Synaptic Package Manager and then did a clean install of TeamViewer 6 by executing the new deb file.
TeamViewer 6 was added to the Main Menu just fine, but after rebooting my laptop, the TeamViewer 6 Main Menu launcher was gone and a broken link was there in its place.
I have since followed the solution in the below thread to get a valid TeamViewer 6 launcher back in the Main Menu, but I cannot get rid of the broken link.

In the System->Preferences->Main Menu window, the broken link is basically frozen. I can't hide it or delete it. Is there some file I'm just going to have to update to get rid of it?

Apr 8, 2011I have serious problems hiding the Grub menu at startup.
What I want to do is simple boot into the first (and only) item without showing the menu to the user.
I have removed everything on the system so the only option is "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-30-generic" in the menu.
My /etc/default/grub is like this:

May 6, 2011Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 I noticed that my Grub menu had not upgraded. The upgrade was not as straight forward as it should have been as the PC hung at the end of the installation resulting in a reboot and running dpkg in safe mode to get it all back up and running.
To fix the incorrect grub menu.lst file which was not updating, I renamed the original file and then ran sudo update-grub. It generated a new and correct file. However, my Windows partition was not listed as a Grub menu option.

Jun 21, 2011I dual-booted Ubuntu three weeks ago with windows vista. Now I want to get rid of everything windows vista and its partition.As I restart my computer the esc, f1,f2,f8,del, and f12 keys don't do anything on the screen that says Dell BIOS revision 1.0.3 the next screen is blank. and my monitor, on auto detect(analog input), says cannot display this video mode 1680x1050. I've tried using the live cd (I just put it in the drive, and don't know what else to do besides that)I've tried using sudo xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1024x768 --rate 60 in the terminal but all I get is this -> xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default (I did this because I thought it might be a monitor problem)
I've tried going to disk utility...buts that all mumbo jumbo to meex: can anyone explain partitions me? I have: dell utility 49MB FAT,recovery 11 GB NTFS, OS 184 BG NTFS, Extended 56 GB, 53 GB ext4, and finally 2.1 GB Swap 2.1 GB which is the last partition known as sda6.
