Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Access My Sda2 / Enable This?
Mar 27, 2010
I had a Centos install that corrupted the boot and would only boot to GRUB. After about a week of trying linux rescue and various measures I gave up and installed a fresh copy of Centos on /dev/hda which is a 40 GB drive. All my data was on /dev/sda which I did not overwrite and is a 1TB SATA drive. I added sda to the LVM of hda now and is recognized as part of Partition 2 - using the GUI Logical Volume Management. My problem is I can't seem to figure out how to retreive my data from the sda2 drive. This is what I've tried. code...
I just successfully installed ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat Maverik parallel to manufacturer installed Windows 7 Professional on a newly bought ThinkPad t410. All works find just that on the boot screen instead of 1 Windows partition (usually something like "Windows 7 loader on sda1") I find two Windows partitions. Now, I know that Thinkpads have a recovery partition. Funny is though that both "Windows 7 loader on sda1/2" login to what seems the identical Windows (not one of them the "normal" and the other some form of a recovery).
How can I enable passphrase along with the password for login via ssh ? In that whenever I login from server A to server B via ssh, it should ask me for a password and then passphrase to allow me access. OR Can we have multiple passwords to login via ssh ?My basic need is to have 2 levels of password.
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Wanted to restore laptop to Windows 7 and put Ubuntu on another machine. The Laptop is an Acer and the Win 7 disks go into a propitiatory recovery screen. I have 3 choices reload Win 7 to new state, Load Win 7 and put everything in backup or Exit.
I have loaded the Ubuntu 10:10 Live and downloaded ms-sys. The problem is Ubuntu is unable to mount the HDD - not in fstab.

How do you enable a login screen? When I turn on my computer I only get command line. When I log into root I can start my KDE desktop using startx. But if I log into any other user I get the following errorX: usser not authorized to run the X server, aborting.giving up.xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X serverxinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
Here is my problem: I had a 500GB HDD, with the fallowing partitions: C - 100GB - NTFS - Windows 7 D - 300GB - NTFS - (for staffs) H - 100GB - NTFS - unused
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu on tha last one (H), wishing to keep also the others two partitions. Now I can not access the first two, I don't see them any more. In my Disk Usage appears only the linux partition and one "Unallocated Space" of 400GB
Do you think that i have a chance to recover my data from the two partitions that I can't see them? code...

Ubuntu desktop 9.04 Whenever I try to copy files to any machine on the network, the transfer stops and I no longer have access to the network or the internet. This happens whether I'm doing scp, copy with the gui, when copying to windows machines, and when uploading database files with phpmyadmin. I have been able to successfully transfer large amounts of data outside of the network via ftp, but not to any on the network. I've discovered that I can re-enable network access by restarting NetworkManager.
when you attache a pen drive with windows you can drag from the pen drive to the desk top, and visa versa. with Linux logged in as normal user I can drag files from pen drive to Desktop but not the other way around. my pen drive is TITANIUM and at /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/TITANIUM so I have to use
cp /home/user/Desktop/file /media/TITANIUM as root
If I log in as root I can drag files from pen drive to desktop and also from Desktop to pen drive. is there an easy way to give permissions for normal user. I had a look a groups and it has scanner, printer etc listed ,can I amend groups somehow to enable same permissions for pen drive access as root?
I am stepping into Linux world ...and I have chosen CentOS. I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a dedicated IBM server successfully. My server has two network cards. I have configured eth0 for lease line internet connection with a live IP (113.xxx.xxx.xxx) and eth1 for local LAN with a static IP (192.168.0.1).
Now, 1. DHCP is working fine and I can access the server from my Windows XP clients. 2. I can access the server with SSH client PuTTY from home ( with the live IP ) and from the local LAN (with static IP 192.168.0.1) 3. I can access my shared server directory 'public' from my XP clients 4. Internet is working on sever and I have updated the server with yum update.
But, I cannot access internet from my XP clients machines.
I read "The Definitive Guide to CentOS" and tweaked the config files in different ways but it did not help. now after two sleepless nights I am here as my last hope.
I admit, I am not aware of every linux terms and commands, but I am getting into it. code...
I'm running CentOS 5.5 with a hardware Areca controller (Raid 10). I initially installed a machine and rsynced the file system to a third machine; I'm then pulling in the file system to new machines and updating grub with a script to make it bootable.
I've done this before with other machines (no raid sets) but with these machines I'm running into errors code...
Enable remote access to MySQL database server I used the link above to enable remote access to mysql for a specific user. But when I try to telnet 3306 or user mysqladmin to connect, both just hang there. Using mysql 5.0 on opensuse 11.1
I want to enable the desktop effects (such as smooth minimising, smooth viewport switching, etc) but it says that "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?"
My first question is how do I check to make sure whether the NVIDIA drivers are enabled or not? (I know they're on the system, since 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' is in the list of applications).
My second question is how do I activate these drivers?
Note that I don't have root access, since I'm using a university machine, so I can't edit the xorg.conf or anything like that.
i'm using unr (9.10) and flash player works fine for me, the admin, but not for the other user on the computer. when the other users goes to videos, he gets a message that flash player is not installed or javascript is turned off. i checked and javascript is on.
I am setting up a computing cluster in my lab, as below. all the "eth0" IP addresses are static (for cluster communication) and the "eth1" of the front node is the only one connected to the internet through lab's DHCP server (which is connected to a centralized computer center in the university). The thing I wish to do is to do some sort of IP masquerading to enable all the nodes to have internet access. I actually google around and read some books. The similar things I came across is setting rules in iptables but I did not manage to get any of them working. I am using Ubuntu Lucid 64-bit on all machine.
I've installed ubuntu 10.10 yesterday and i went to check something in my MS OS, im choosing "windows 7 loader XYZ"(XYZ reffers to something sda/....) in it comes back to the grub menu, any help please? im searching for hours for a solution and i can't find.
I would like to be able to change my BIOS setting to enable me to access a live cd or dvd to try some Linux Distros. At the moment ,when I access the BIOs ,it willl not stay as adjusted ,it ignores the settings ,it goes to default.
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:
Code: drwxrwxrwx 4 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 18:02 Apps drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:02 Music drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-08-14 19:27 Pics drwxrwxrwx 5 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:48 Video This is how my smb.conf file looks like for this particular share:
Code: [share1] comment = share1 browsable = yes path = /samba write list = michal Furthermore, I went ahead and mapped the Samba user to my Linux user account in /etc/samba/smbusers:
Code: michal = "michal" When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.
First, my mistake was unchecking the option to boot into Ubuntu through GRUB customizer. Woops. All I could do at this point was boot into Vista, that's about it.So, I boot into Vista, wiped the Linux partitions, and restored the ability to boot into Vista with a Vista CD. Then I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10, no problems here. Its just that when I boot up and get into the GRUB menu, I can't boot into my actual Vista. The option for it isn't present. I can boot into Ubuntu, Memory Test, and Vista's Recovery, but not Vista itself. Here is my GRUB cfg, haven't touched it or anything.
Code:
# # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
[code]....
I believe that my troubles lie in this part,
Code:
ls: cannot access /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot Boot: No such file or directory
I'm unsure of what to do at this point, because I'm afraid of messing everything up.I have a Vista boot CD if I need it, an Ubuntu live CD, but that's about it. Too long, didn't read: Can't boot into Vista on sda2, what do?
I have an external hard drive connected to my router. From Windows I can access it, but from Ubuntu I can see the hard drive, but when I try to access, I'm asked for a password. However my network does not have a password neither the hard drive. What must I do?
Since a few days i can no longer use my external hard drive (USB). During my quest i noticed the following things: Running openSUSE 11.2 / KDE 4.4.3 / single boot My internal HD is on /dev/sda2 (mounted /) partition manager (YaST) or gparted don't start up (they just hang during start-up) I had to change permissions suddenly to read a CD (i was not in de cdrom group, but i have been using CDs for a while)
Code: > df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 113306052 84757232 22793136 79% / udev 2052352 4140 2048212 1% /dev
I'll avoid the details of what got me here and get right to the point.I have two primary partitions on 1 hard drive. sda1 is my fat32 recovery partition and sda2 is my ntfs windows xp partition. I need to know how to change the order around so xp is sda1 by using the terminal in the ubuntu live cd.
Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS -Partition dev/sda2 is formatted as FAT32 and mounted as /d. Boot found a problem with it; the original and backup copies of the boot sector don't match.dosfsck refuses to fix it. I use 'dos fsck /dev/sda2" and it offers to copy one to the other, but whatever I pick it refuses to write to the drive. I use "dosfsck -a /dev/sda2" and again it refuses to write to the drive. How can I fix this Must I reformat the partition?
I used GParted to delete my first partition, then moved my second partition to the beginning of the disk. That all went well, but the partition table still shows an unused entry of 0 blocks listed at partition 1. How do I get rid of that entry and make my old second partition sda1?
