I was looking for:how to access my Linux machine(OpenSuse 11.3) that is being hosted at my hoster company from my home Win Pc, I found TightVNC , but I am confused, should I install it on both systems ( viewer and server) ? .. what about the VirtualBox , can i Access with that tool or it is only for mounting the local Virtual Machines?
View 2 RepliesI have a remote desktop session to a Windows 7 Workstation that keeps timingut/disconnecting after a minute or two of idiling. Also, sometimes it disconnects while I am in the middle of using it.I have tried turing off all NIC power saving options, the sound option for remote desktop, and all the go to sleep power saving options. I don't have any issues with remote desktop connecting to various Windows Server 2008 R2 Machines and VMs.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it
I need to access a Windows Server 2000 machine using a Linux machine via KDE, but that will migrate to Gnome. The Linux user to connect to Windows machine, you should open an application 'XYZ' automatically, and only this, denying any unauthorized access. When you close the application 'XYZ' communications (RDP?) Should be terminated. Do I need a log of accesses and possible attempts to circumvent the system and access other application.

I have a duo core HP machine with two (2) physical hard drives.Drive C has the win Vista Media center version installed.The second drive has 2 partitions of 500gb each.One has all my windows data files on it and the second partition I have reserverd for the installation of Linux.How to install Linux on the second partition (SDB1) without loosing the ability to use windows when i need.In other words i want to establish a dual boot system and not disturb the existing windows installation by installing Linux and then be able to boot into a dual boot system that will let me select which OS to boot to.

While it seems simple in concept, I know there will be several issues I'll have to deal with. What I'd like to know is if anyone has recommendations as far as software to use and methods for securing connections. I'd like to have communications encrypted, which last I heard OpenVNC couldn't do (maybe that's not the case?). Also, I'm not really sure how the interactions between windows clients vs. my linux server and the remote connections should be handled. Would I need a separate instance of say, OpenVNC, on each client that I wanted to be allowed remote access?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.
I tried out the vino vnc server and connected to it through windows vnc viewer but It seems to lag really badly. I am connecting through a 100mb connection. I would like to try out the vnc4server but I can't find a good tutorial on setting it up where I can login to my system from gdm. Somebody please either point me to the best solution or a good tuturial.

Fix I'd forgotten about the Windows server security. Control Panel, System & Security, System Remote Settings, Remote Desktop has 3 radio buttons. I changed from most secure to medium security.

I want to remote-desktop into a windows box that happens be hooked up to a linux server.The linux server uses a static IP. I've already enabled remote-desktop on the windows machine, but am wondering what I need to do server-side to make the server's ip forward to the windows machine. To work on a shell, I connect to the VNC server, and to access files I host them using apache and open them from my browser. It would be great if I can access my shells via my browser itself instead of using VNC or command prompt.
