Fedora :: How To Access The Grub Or Command Line

Dec 18, 2009

with that said i burned fedora 8, 10, and 11 checked the sha1 verified everything was fine i had originally installed fedora 8 on an old pc i had from windows XP without any problems messed with it some, upgraded to 10 again no problems. tired to update 11 got a message about ext3 not found ext4 not found, re installed 10 the loader loads up now i have a blank screen with a cursor it the left hand corner

again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.

i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.

Fedora :: GRUB :: Menu.lst :: GRUB Starts In Command Line?

Dec 1, 2010

Code:

grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...

Code:

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)

Now when I boot I still get the 'grub>' command line, but now the root is correct.

From 'grub>' I can type...

Code:

grub> configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst

GRUB will then show the menu, and I can click the listings to load them. All's fine, but why doesn't GRUB just load the menu.lst without my prompting? How can I automate this process of typing 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' each time I boot?

Fedora :: Access Machine In Command Line Mode

Apr 16, 2011

my fedora 14 did an automatic update tonight and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login in menu. The "f" is how I now feel.I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs.I do not know how to access the machine in command line mode and I am not sure what to do from here. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure.

Fedora Installation :: Boot - Grub Drops Into Its Minimal Shell And Gives A Command Line

Jun 12, 2009

I'd like to say I'm very impressed with Fedora 11. I'm a long time Linux user and I've tried many distros. But, I usually keep only the best on my laptop. For a long time that was Ubuntu but, I think Fedora 11 has made some key improvements over Ubuntu and I'm eager to switch. The problem is: I haven't been able to run Fedora as anything other than on the Live CD. Everything works perfectly and it installs but, when I reboot, Grub begins. Instead of booting, however, Grub drops into its minimal shell and gives me a command line.

I've tried installing it a number of ways now and have read much about the problems with Ext4 on Grub and took special care to see that Grub has its own, separate, /boot ext3 partition. Even then, no luck. My hardware should work fine. I've got an HP DV-5 with 4GB RAM, AMD Turion 64-bit dual-core @ 2 Ghz, and an IDE 250GB hard drive. I'm working with the 64-bit Fedora 11 Live disc with KDE as the Gui.

Fedora :: After Rebooting - Screwed Up Grub - Can't Remember Terminal Command To Repair Grub

Nov 24, 2010

I created a new partition in Windows Vista which, after rebooting, screwed up Grub. I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.

grub>

I can boot the live CD and I have internet access with it, but I can not remember the terminal command to repair Grub. Can someone tell me this command?

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

Fedora :: 10 Loading Directly To Command Line?

Sep 18, 2009

I decided on a whim to pursue certifications in other operating systems (currently 70-620 and 70-290 certified with Microsoft) and bought a book on Fedora 10 and installed it on my extra PC. First issue I ran into was that due to my graphics card being an ATI I needed to run in text mode (based off posts on these forums) then once I finally got everything under control and installed, it loads directly into Command Prompt (you folks call it GRUB right?) I can log in as root but I can't do anything this way.It won't even allow me to do things like accept the end user license agreement or create new users or see the GUI.

Fedora :: F12: Ten-second 'DNS' Delay For Command-line Apps?

Dec 15, 2009

I'm experiencing a peculiar problem with Fedora 12. There is a ten-second delay when various command-line applications (e.g. ssh, wget) connect to remote machines for the first time. The delay is also seen when the remote machine name does not exist.Subsequent connections to the same remote machine are immediate. This isn't a DNS delay - the host and dig commands return immediately, for both existing and non-existant hostnames. It's not a reverse DNS lookup by the remote machine either: other Fedora 10 machines do not experience this delay and neither did my two Fedora 12 machines when they were running Fedora 10.

time this was something to do with nscd, the name service caching daemon. Stopping nscd changes the delay to five seconds, but subsequent connections are no longer immediate - there is again a 5 second delay. This implies that nscd is caching the names correctly. The delays are always precisely 10 seconds, or 5 seconds when nscd is not running. I have confirmed this with the time command. There appears to be no odd network traffic (tested with tcpdump) and nscd appears to be running normally. I've confirmed this with a Fedora 12 live CD as well - nscd is not started at boot, but once started, the machine behaves in exactly the way described above.
