Ubuntu :: Sometimes Hangs On Boot After Grub?

Jan 9, 2011

Sometimes when my machine tries to boot ubuntu it works SOMETIMES, but most of the time it hangs on a certain driver/message. I've disabled the silent splash to show you guys where it freezes.

Quote:

Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts
Switching to clocksource hpet
thermal LNXTHERM:01: registered as thermal_zone1
ACPI: Thermal Zone [T22] (67C)

[Code]....

And then it stops there. I think ATA_PIIX is some ubuntu ata driver, but I don't know why there since my hard-drive passes all the S.M.A.R.T tests.

Keep in mind it SOMETIMES, but not very often, boots.

Edit: This machine was used with Ubuntu 8.10 before, and possibly 9.04, but that was before they introduced Audio for Intel HDA's Sigmatel. This is also a clean install.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

OpenSUSE Hardware :: GRUB To Dual Boot 11.2 And Windows XP But Hangs On Boot

Apr 20, 2010

HW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.

But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.

Software :: GRUB Boot Of XP Hangs At Flashing Cursor?

May 19, 2010

I installed Fedora 11 today, because I'm really looking to replace Windows. I've been running a Fedora 11 webserver at home for over a year, but this is Linux, which means that I spent about 8 hours on it over a year ago, and then only logged in once or twice since. :P

So after the install, I booted to a GRUB prompt and no menu. After searching around, I changed my BIOS settings to Large for the hard drive, and got the GRUB menu to load, and now I'm posting this from within Fedora 11, and after some good healthy exercises with the soundcard, xvid drivers, and a few other things, it's great. When I load XP from Grub, I just get a flashing underscore and no progress.XP is installed in the first partition, and has been there for a few months. Here's my grub.conf:

Code:

Fedora Installation :: 15 Post Install Boot - Computer Hangs Before Grub Loads

Jun 5, 2011

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub With Full USB Install 10.04 - If Hdds Are Attached, Boot Hangs On "checking Dmi Pool Data..."

Feb 18, 2011

I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.

2 things happen as I boot:

1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen

boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as

1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install

1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)

Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?

Ubuntu :: Change GRUB Boot Order: No /boot/grub/menu.lst File

Nov 29, 2010

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Ubuntu :: Booting Hangs At Grub Menu?

Jan 19, 2010

not related to this thread [URL]

On a few VMs. Sometimes, when powering them on I get the GNU GRUB menu...

Code:
GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
etc

But there is no countdown for a default boot. It just hangs here. Indefinitely. Until I make a choice by pressing the enter key with "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" highlighted (default). I don't know if this is because the VM may not have been shutdown properly or what the case is, but this is unacceptable as I need these systems to continue to boot and get back on line regardless of the reason they were powered off.

CentOS 5 :: Installed 5.5 From DVD And Hangs With GRUB

Dec 5, 2010

I'm not sure what's going on with this install, but I started with a fresh install on a 250GB IDE disk, assigning /dev/hda1 to linux, and the rest (/dev/hda2) to swap. when it tries to boot.. I just get GRUB hang. Should I have installed a small FAT32 partition in the first sectors of the disk for the bootloader?

The bios in this machine is very old (Dell 410 precision) and Dell offers no updates, so I suspect this has something to do with how the old bios is trying to boot, but ?? not sure how to fix it. try lilo, or alternate bootloader???? Just looking for a fix to the boot problem. I would prefer to boot from the disk, booting from cd/floppy/pxe not so desirable.

Ubuntu :: Boot Hangs (sometimes) After Dual Boot Screen?

May 25, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and a small Windows 7 partition (cuz I can't get Ubuntu to run my MSI TV@nywhere plus card but that's another issue).I can log into Windows fine. If I choose Ubuntu, however, the boot process will go thru a few screen flickers. Then one of two things happens:1) I get a scrambled up pixelated image (not sure what it is) for about 3 second, then it goes into the login screen and I can log in normally.2) I get the scrambled up pixelated image and it hangs. This happens about 4 times out of 5 when rebooting.

I do have an nVidia card and a beta driver (they published it the 21st, I believe, of this month) but this happened long before that. It's happened ever since I installed any of the drivers (I've tried a couple different versions, hoping to fix this) for my card.

My system is a frankenputer:
Phenom II quad core 3.0 cpu
nVidia GeForce BFG 6600
4G DDR3
500G drive

Note: I do have 3D rendering when I finally get into the desktop. Everything works great, except that when I'm playing my mmorpg, Regnum Online, it freezes the entire computer and I have to reboot (not sure if that has anything to do with it or not).In case it's needed, this is my grub:(Second note: I'm sorry for the length of the post but I don't know how to upload documents/files to show)

Ubuntu Installation :: Use An Arrow Key To Move Downwards In The Menu - Grub Hangs

Jan 17, 2010

I saw a similar thrad, but can't find it anymore. Anyhow it was not resolved. So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.

Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?

Ubuntu :: Grub Screen Hangs At Loading Stage 1.5 - Error 25

Jul 20, 2010

I started my laptop this morning with no problems. It was doing a file system check which I quit (pressing C) after about 30%. The only problem I had was wired networking didn't seem to be working (though wireless was). No problem: this happens sometimes and a restart fixes it. After restart: the GRUB screen hangs at "Loading stage 1.5" for ages before issuing Error 25. Try a restart. Same thing. And again. I'm on Lucid 10.4, no other OS installed, Toshiba laptop that up to now has had no problems with the last two versions of Ubuntu.

Hardware :: System Hangs After Grub Screen Ubuntu 9.10 32bit

Feb 3, 2010

So I just did a fresh install of 9.10 32bit on my media pc, booted right up the first couple of times however it choose to stop doing so for some reason. When it boots I see the words "Grub Loading" flash on the screen and then it just goes to a black screen with the white flashing line in the upper left hand corner...

the system was running well and I'm not sure what exactly changed... I just went to reboot it and it wouldn't come back online.

Also worth noting is that it is also failing to boot from a LiveCD for me, I get the screen where I select how I want to boot from the disc, I select "try Ubuntu with out any changes to my computer" and then after that it hangs again.

I'm fairly certain the hardware is good as it never had any issues like this on Windows 7 and I can still boot properly from a Windows based disc.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Hangs After The Upgrade?

Jan 22, 2010

I've attempted to upgrade my FC9 machine to the latest Fedora 12. I downloaded the iso image onto DVD and booted from the DVD into the installer GUI. Everything proceeded flawlessly until I tried to reboot from the new installation on the hard drive. When rebooting, the word GRUB appears and the system hangs. I've rebooted in rescue mode and the grub.conf appears to make sense, although I can't say that I understand all the entries. Based on some research, I suspect that the problem is ocurring even before grub.conf get read.

Can someone give me a tip on where to begin? I don't expect a detailed answer, but I don't even know where to get started. As far as I know, I have no unusual hardware configurations. No RAID, no booting from USB. The system is old (bought around 2002), but has plenty of memory and storage. One possible clue: my USB keyboard would not work during the installation phase, and I had to replace it with one that plugged into the PS/2 port. USB mouse seems to be fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fixing Grub - Volume Hangs With A Non-blinking Cursor In The Upper Left?

Mar 11, 2010

I set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!

SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume. It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.

Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)

Dec 20, 2010

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.

No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts, experiences, similar issues - whatever?
