Debian Installation :: Grub 2 Not Setting Boot Record?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.

Debian :: Setting Up Grub Against The Rules?

Feb 11, 2011

Since I have been using grub-legacy in quite an unorthodox manner, and ironically, getting benefits that an otherwise obedient user wouldn't even dream of getting, this question may, most probably, pose a challenge to all those who don't understand the filthy tricks of grub. So, here I am, trying to install grub, in a manner, that makes it independent of all operating systems on my computer. As I understand it, a bootloader is so important, especially when it is used to boot multiple OSs, that I deem it mandatory for it to be installed in a manner making it independent of all operating systems it is used for.

What I did till now:I have a 24 Mega Byte partition to which I copied /boot/grub/*I run the command: # grub-install --root-directory=/mounted-partition-holding-the-copied-files '(hd0)'Grub boots, but the menus are not displayed presenting me with a cute shell with limited commands. My next strategy in this battle, is to copy the device.map and grub.cfg files from a working installation - a sort of a heart transplant.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Hangs After The Upgrade?

Jan 22, 2010

I've attempted to upgrade my FC9 machine to the latest Fedora 12. I downloaded the iso image onto DVD and booted from the DVD into the installer GUI. Everything proceeded flawlessly until I tried to reboot from the new installation on the hard drive.When rebooting, the word GRUB appears and the system hangs. I've rebooted in rescue mode and the grub.conf appears to make sense, although I can't say that I understand all the entries. Based on some research, I suspect that the problem is ocurring even before grub.conf get read.

Can someone give me a tip on where to begin? I don't expect a detailed answer, but I don't even know where to get started. As far as I know, I have no unusual hardware configurations. No RAID, no booting from USB. The system is old (bought around 2002), but has plenty of memory and storage. One possible clue: my USB keyboard would not work during the installation phase, and I had to replace it with one that plugged into the PS/2 port. USB mouse seems to be fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Use An Arrow Key To Move Downwards In The Menu - Grub Hangs

Jan 17, 2010

I saw a similar thrad, but can't find it anymore. Anyhow it was not resolved. So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.

Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Setting Up 10.04 (Lynx) And GRUB

May 4, 2010

I just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, and while everything kernel-wise is running fine so far, I have a problem that is giving me heartburn. It appears that I have broken my Windows XP boot command, as selecting that boot option will only loop back to the GRUB selection menu. The Partition is there, and I can access it through ubuntu's file manager, but right now I simply cannot boot into windows. Partition information: 540gb set for windows (NTFS), 55 set for unbuntu.

[Code]....

During the update, an autoconfig screen came up asking me to select what I wanted to boot from in GRUB. I selected what I thought referred to the harddisk partitions (and not simply selecting all of them. ) Is there any way to bring that window back up to change that? while I am a *cough* Windows power user *cough*, I don't understand ubuntu (or Linux) very well, so please keep that in mind when replying.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fixing Grub - Volume Hangs With A Non-blinking Cursor In The Upper Left?

Mar 11, 2010

I set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!

SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume.It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/

Debian Installation :: EmDebian On ARM Hangs At Runlevel 2

May 24, 2011

I am attempting to create a working emdebian system on some arm hardware that I have. I can successfully boot the system, but it hangs at runlevel 2. I am trying to determine how to debug my problem but I am currently at a loss. I am going to include the steps I have taken thus far in hopes that someone can point out my error(s) and mistakes.
I've used multistrap
sudo multistrap --no-auth -a armel -d EmDebian/ -f emdebian.conf
to create a rootfs; t

The content of emdebian.conf is something similar to the following:
[General]
unpack=true
debootstrap=Grip Networking Debian
aptsources=Debian

[Grip]
packages=ntpdate udev lrzsz netcat telnetd adduser sudo nano
source=[URL
keyring=emdebian-archive-keyring
suite=stable

[Debian]
packages=
source=[URL]
keyring=debian-archive-keyring
suite=stable

[Networking]
packages=netbase ifupdown iproute net-tools
source=[URL]
keyring=emdebian-archive-keyring
suite=stable

After multistrap finishes I do the following:
sudo cp /usr/bin/qemu-arm-static EmDebian/usr/bin/
and then I chroot into it:
sudo chroot EmDebian/
Once inside I finalize the installation by doing
dpkg --configure -a

At this point in time I have went as far as creating a new user as well as added the ability to login via the serial console. However each situation ends in the same exact way, the kernel simply halts right after it enters runlevel2 when it is implemented on the arm hardware. For what it is worth I am using a kernel that I have verified to work using a different OS, so I believe that should not be the problem. I am looking for what my next step should be to resolve this problem, verbose booting relieved nothing and I can't seem to locate the reason for this hang.

Debian Installation :: Upgraded To Jessie 8.2 Now Boot Hangs

Dec 4, 2015

I had Debian 7.9 up and running like a charm until yesterday. Today I did the upgrade to 8.2, now boot hangs. I see 3 boot entries for the new kernel now -

Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (sysvinit)
Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (recovery mode)

The latter 2 entries have no problem booting up. So do the previous kernel(3.2.0.4) entries. Only the first one hangs, for which I see these 6 lines on the console:

[ 0.214704] pnp 00:04: can't evaluate _CRS: 12298
Loading, please wait...
fsck from util-linux 2.25.2
/dev/mapper/myhost-root: clean, 198627/61000000 files, 2160052/24412 blocks
[ 0.047141] kvm: disabled by bios
[ 0.000985] kvm: disabled by bios

How can I make it boot up like others?

Debian Installation :: Wheezy Installer Hangs Randomly

Aug 25, 2011

I'm trying to install Wheezy (amd64) from the daily netinst image with the text-based installer. The PC will lock up randomly at some point in the process (usually after about 5-10 minutes). The video signal cuts out, keyboard lights are unresponsive, and I have to hard-reset the machine.I was previously trying to install Linux Mint Debian Edition and had the same problem. Another user reports that this is due to a bug in the nouveau nVidia driver, but I can't confirm it.URL...

I assume the Debian text installer isn't using nouveau, so it seems unlikely that would be the problem. The random timing does suggest an overheating problem, though, and the fact that the video signal drops out would seem to implicate the video card. I had no lockups at all with the OS that was previously installed (Ubuntu 11.04).

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub With Full USB Install 10.04 - If Hdds Are Attached, Boot Hangs On "checking Dmi Pool Data..."

Feb 18, 2011

I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.

2 things happen as I boot:

1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen

boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as

1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install

1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)

Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?

Debian Installation :: Boot Hangs After Successful Fresh Install

Nov 24, 2015

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen.The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.

This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit).There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).

My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.

Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

Debian Installation :: Dist-upgrade From Wheezy (using Systemd) To Jessie Hangs

Nov 19, 2014

I have done on previous releases, but this time it hangs on me. It's "only" a Virtualbox, so I can reproduce it.

The wheezy already runs systemd, and is fully updated to to latest packages. Does not run any graphical.

Edits the source.list and does
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get upgrade # Did on one upgrade
$ apt-get dist-upgrade

It starts to upgrade (complains about missing version in libpgp-error), libc is installed, but at some point the systemd is running at high CPU and a dpkg seems to be stalled.

Should I disable systemd on wheezy before? This might not have been tested so much.
