Ubuntu Installation :: Boot/grub/win7 - Testdisk/update-grub Method, But It Didn't Work?

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.
I set up a dual boot system with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10. Ubuntu is the first OS listed in the boot menu. I would like to change the boot order so Windows is first. Also after running a few updates I now have multiple boot items listed for Ubuntu that I'm sure are no longer needed. Having never edited Grub and searching through the forum, I'm asking help. I going to guess that I want to edit grub.cfg. If so, what do I need to change within the following information?
Firstly, I installed my Windows 7 on sda2; then, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on sda1. But the computer directly get into Ubuntu without listing the grub list. How to get the Grub list back and make sure the Widows 7 is on the list?
I wanted to install ubuntu 11.04 alongside win7 on my notebook (with no optical drive). I created 2 primary partitions (one for win7 [ntfs] one for ubuntu [ext4]) and 2 logical partitions (one for swap one for general use for storage[ntfs]) by running ubuntu from my USB Flash disk and using gparted. First, I installed win7 without having any problem, then ubuntu also without having any (apparent) problem (I installed boot loader on MBR: the default setting). After the ubuntu installation is over, I was instructed to restart my computer as usual and win7 started without asking me which OS to boot. When I run ubuntu from my Flash disk and run gparted and selected the boot drive as the partition on which ubuntu was installed, I got the error saying "missing operating system". I suppose GRUB is misconfigured and that is causing the problem because nothing went wrong during the installation processes. How to configure GRUB by running ubuntu from my Flash disk. BTW win7 is working just fine.
i have ubuntu 10 and win 7 dual booting on one hdd, all of a sudden grub says error no such partition when i select windows at the boot menu. and i cant get to the win7 partition from ubuntu (to play music and stuff, this used to work, places, mount filesystem, 250 gigs whatever). i've tried the stuff in these links and nothing has worked so farpartition info

I'm having serious troubles to install ubuntu-10.04.1. My raid is an hardware raid with intel chipset. Note that win7 is already installed and working with my raid. I made some space from windows, to install Ubuntu (40gb). First, I run the installer, everything seems to be fine. I choose to install Ubuntu were there is the most space free (sorry, I'm not sure about the real terms used there).
Then my partition with the vista loader appears. So the installer can see my raid, and should work fine (everything is detected correctly). But once I'm in the end of the installation (around 95%), a pop-up appears, and tells me that Grub can't install in /dev/sda and it's a fatal error. I can choose an another destination, but it doesn't seems to work.
I just installed Fedora15 on my laptop. When the installation completed, the system rebooted and gave me a Grub Error 17. I logged in the rescue mode and got the following output from

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.
I partitioned it using the Acronis (proprietary) partitioning software. I've had to move these around a bit when I initially set it up and at one point grub didnt work anymore. It was after I had to expand my Windows (7) partition. However I'm told that most modern software dont use the same unit of measurement that fdisk still uses 'til this day. Should I even be concerned? I did have to reinstall grub after I initial set all my partitions up. This post is merely a double-check to make sure.
I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?
I am dual booting Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 with WUBI. (Windows works fine). When I updated Ubuntu from the update manager, it just gives me this error code from a JPG attachment I just added with this post. It keeps on saying that every time ubuntu boots up.Is there a Fix? I cant boot up to ubuntu at all...
I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.

So I re-install WinXP... Re-install Grub2 and WinXP doesn't show up again...
So I custumise Grub2 and I put one line for WinXP (doesn't work)

I've resized partitions with some program - perhaps even gparted - but from Win7. partitions are indeed resized, but now I can't boot Win7, grub says: "No such device found - No such partition found". I tried to use some advices on similar problems I found here (like adding GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_msdos" to etc/default/grub and running grub-mkconfig after), but nothing helped. I guess I could restore win7 with installation dvd but I want to fix GRUB (and have both ubuntu 10.10 and win7)

The installation went smoothly however, I have installed SuSE11.4 on my 2nd Hard Drive. Now Grub doesn't work and I want to know where and how to install it.
I use CloneZilla to image partitions and Grub 0.97 in the MBR to boot the os restored in /sda1. Although it works fine with XP, I can't get Vista or Windows7 to boot. For instance, Vista fails with error 0xc00000e and is unable to load WINLOAD.EXE. I don't know if it's something in Windows or maybe Grub needs something else besides the following in menu.lst to be able to load Vista and Win7?
I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says: "Windows cannot start. A recent upgrade or hardware change may have caused this".

Partition table entries are not in disk order. I have the Vista recovery disk but was wondering whether using it to repair the Vista bootloader might mess up Grub.
I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.
With a bit of help from this forum I managed to install 10.04. The solution was to add i915.modeset=1 to the options when booting up from CD.Now I need to do the same in order to boot up from HD. I've opened /etc/default/grub and changed the relevant line to include the above option. But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. What can I do?
I just updated my server from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and now it cannot go past grub, at boot time, it would "give up waiting for root device", asking me to check whether I gave the right "root=..." or if I should increase the "rootdelay=..." in the command line argument and end up with the initramfs.
The machine is a Dell Poweredge 2900 with a HW RAID controller (I hope that should not matter, but just in case...). I tried to follow the instructions there to make sure grub is setup correctly, but without any luck.

I am able to get into GRUB and boot Linux, but whenever I select Windows, all I get is an error about a missing boot loader.
After the Windows install disk failed to repair it, I reinstalled the Windows system and then used the Ubuntu live-CD to restore GRUB in order to be able to boot into Linux again. Now I have the same problem as when I started (although the error screen is somewhat different now).
Does anyone know how to break this "evil circle" of mine?
The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).
I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:
So my computer has ubuntu 9.10 installed 1st and I want to install win 7 in a separate partition. Basically, ubuntu 1st, win 7 later so far from what I learned from search results, grub 2 have problem with win 7 installed later and what was recommended was install win 7 before ubuntu. how ever I do not have the time to start over again because there are too many things to back up or install again. can I simply revert grub 2 to grub 1 again and resolve the problem?
