In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

I have installed very few OS as a result - Windows in first 80 GB , 2 distros (20 GB each) in next 40 MB which is within the 149 GB. On issue of "update-grub" grub seems to detect all OS and generates grub.cfg. But on boot , one distro does not appear in the menu.

Oct 23, 2010With a bit of help from this forum I managed to install 10.04. The solution was to add i915.modeset=1 to the options when booting up from CD.Now I need to do the same in order to boot up from HD. I've opened /etc/default/grub and changed the relevant line to include the above option. But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. What can I do?

When update-grub builds the grub.cfg, it refers to all of my partitions as follows:

So I'm guessing that the whole nvidia_blah,msdos5 is because of that. However, it doesn't seem to explain why Grub would THINK that would work and it in fact does not work. That's the biggest source of confusion on my part.
My questions are as follows: First off, because as an IT person I want to know: Why does this sort of change work? What does changing that device name change in GRUB's behavior? Is there a setting in /etc/default/grub that would change the way it's naming these RAID devices? Is there a value for this setting that would give me the device names that work, as explained above?
If there is no setting change I can make in /etc/default/grub, could I add a sed command on to the end of update-grub or can I make a modification to one of the scripts in /etc/grub.d? What sort of change would be recommended? How would I preserve this change through later package upgrades that would possibly rewrite these files?

May 6, 2011After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Jul 8, 2011I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.

Dec 16, 2010I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. Nov 29, 2010i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Nov 13, 2010I had to restart my server after it became unstable - strange things like couldn't connect from a Windows machine, becoming unresponsive. When it rebooted, it failed with grub error 18 (this after the machine has been fine for some considerable time, including rebooting).I ran apt-get upgrade shortly before my problems started, and google suggests that I'm not the only one to get this error after apt-get upgrade, but I can't find a solution.I really, really don't want to have to rebuild this machine! I can get in using the recover a broken system option on the install CD - the disk seems fine.

Whenever I shut down my PC and boot it up again, I get to the Initial menu where it asks if you want to run Ubuntu, Ubuntu safe mode etc... I hit enter and then there's just a black screen.
I then have to restart, run Ubuntu in safe mode and update GRUB. After this It boots up fine.
So, is this a software issue? Is it an issue with my HDD or is it something even worse?

Feb 3, 2010On my hard disk I have ubuntu 9.10 (/dev/sda6) and Slackware 13 (/dev/hda1). Since Ubunutu was installed second, it replaced Slackware's lilo with grub. Anyway I modified grub and got Slackware 13 booting also, I has been this way for a couple of months. Tonight slackware would not boot, it kernel panic'ed.Complained about no device /dev/sda1 and listed possible devices, /dev/hda1 (What it is supposed to be) being one of them. What the heck, what changed???
A quick check of /boot/grub.cfg first showed that the las cahnged date was 2010-1-30. What? I have not touched grub.cfg since the Ubuntu 9.10 install. But, I remember that about that date I did a system update. there were four Slackware menuentries, and I remember only one. Strange. Anyway I changed Slackware's grub menu entry to root=/dev/hda1 and rebooted. Now it complained about no known file system, Slackware 13 is ext4. Here is the Slackware menuentry:

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Windows 7 After Grub Update
Jul 21, 2010I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.

Oct 2, 2010I have a Lenny inside a xp. I changed my installation and make a boot partition , a home directory, and a system directory. now I reinstall my xp and do this:

setup (hd0,6)
and grub menu found! but when I clicked on debian, can't boot and I have a message about can't boot from this vmlinuz ( or any thing similar!) , click on any key and then it come back to grub menu. my debian is on (hd0,9) and (hd0,6) is my boot partition.

I have a dual boot vista/ubuntu setup with ubuntu on my d: drive and windows on my c: drive and it happened to me last night. So after my freaking out when I received the grub rescue> error after updating somethings in my ubuntu install and restarting. Once the computer rebooted bam! error. after much freaking it only fixed itself by reinstalling the windows bootloader via the vista rescue disk I was wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening again? will ubuntu attempt to "update" itself again?

Apr 20, 2011I have an old computer that I use for trying out software and other things before putting them on my newer machine so as to avoid irreparable damage. The machine has 2 hard discs; the first disc contains Windows and I wanted to use the second disc for Linux. I installed Fedora 14 on the second disc and followed this with Ubuntu 10.10.
After I installed Fedora I re-booted and had a choice between booting into Windows or Fedora. After adding Ubuntu I assumed that Grub2 would pick up both Windows and Fedora and add them to the grub menu but instead, the grub menu only contained the options to boot Fedora or Ubuntu. I tried running 'sudo update-grub' but got the following message:
"cannot access /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot
Boot: No such file or directory"
When I had a look in /os-prober all that was there was a file called 'labels' and when I opened it it consisted of the one line "Fedora 1" It looks to me, who doesn't know a lot about grub2, that something is missing from grub and had wondered whether to re-install it or whether doing so would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.

Feb 27, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says:

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update Boot To Grub Command Line
Sep 29, 2010I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.

Jun 6, 2011I just updated my server from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and now it cannot go past grub, at boot time, it would "give up waiting for root device", asking me to check whether I gave the right "root=..." or if I should increase the "rootdelay=..." in the command line argument and end up with the initramfs.
The machine is a Dell Poweredge 2900 with a HW RAID controller (I hope that should not matter, but just in case...). I tried to follow the instructions there to make sure grub is setup correctly, but without any luck.
Below is the output from the bootinfoscript (while running on the LiveCD). Anybody has any idea what can be the problem or what I could do to debug this ? I am running out of ideas.
