I assumed the font color of the menu names would change to a color (such as white) that would contrast the near black color of the Dust Dark theme. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell E6520 with Ubuntu 11.04 installed. The webcam and everything else has worked like a charm, including webcam in Skype and other applications. Today Skype webcam got VERY dark. I installed cheese and started it up. The screen was dark initially, but auto adjusted to be good again.
However in Skype same problems. So I followed this: [URL] and installed guvcview and tried to set some values. Suddenly I got some exceptions, and now nothing is working. Cheese will not even show anything else then a hint of a lamp that is in the background. I have tried to install many different software to be able to set the webcam, but no success. In some I get an decent image to start with, but then after one second it will go dark again.
I have a desktop with AMD Sempron 3000+, 1.2GB RAM, VIA S3G Unichrome Pro IGP, VIA SATA RAID controller based disks, PS/2 mouse and keyboard running Windows XP. Wanted to move to years ago favourite (linux based systems), I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 for i386 and am trying to install both using CD as well as USB. After the Ubuntu start-up menu for installation, I select install Ubuntu option, turn off 'quiet' so that I can see what happens. The screen goes blank dark with a flashing cursor at the top.
In the kernel messages, the see that it has detected the processor, set the clock, assigned the PS/2 keyboard to input3 and then says:

After this, the system hangs. Keyboard doesn't work.
Just upgraded to 10.04. Screen is now unusable. It's like looking at it through a blue filter. It seems to be averaging the brightness. if there is a large dark area of screen real estate the paler sections getbrighter.The very bizarre thing is, if I switch user, whilst the theme is different, the brightness problem is gone...

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I activate the Ambiance theme, skype, opera, and probably one or two other applications have black menus with black text. It seems like the black background colour is being used from the Ambiance theme, but the menu text colour is not.
Could it be related to qt4? I just installed Opera qt4 because I read somewhere that qt4 would keep it closer to the theme or something.
I'm using the shiki colors theme from the repos right now. "Shiki-Noble" to be specific. When typing something into Firefox's URL bar the internet addresses have got a dark font color and are hard to read on the dark background. Here's a screenshot: FF.jpg
I've had similar issues with other themes and Firefox's URL bar before.
Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook on my Dell Vostro 1000. Install seemed to go through ok, although I am not connected to the internet. When the install completes, I have the default background image and er... that's it. Around the edge where the menu should be, the background image is slightly darker. If I move the mouse to where the menu items should be, rather than what I assume would be a text label/description of that menu item, I get a blank white box instead. If I click, some of the applications do indeed open, albeit without titlebars.
I am new to Linux, I decided that it should be about right for me to make the switch, but encountering such an issue so early on isn't inspiring me with much confidence. I have access to this Windows machine for downloading and burning CD/DVDs. I also have a WD Passport drive (150Gb) and a USB stick (1Gb).
I recently did a fresh install of Lucid on an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC laptop. At least once a day the main menu and context menus(desktop) in gnome stop working (They will not drop down/ appear). This includes all menus in gtk apps but not menus in not gtk apps such as firefox. I have an autohide panel at the top of the screen for my main menu, shortly after the menus stop working (but never at the same time), the panel wont unhide and the workspace swtcher applet stops working, this corresponds to when the buttons on the panel I can still see (at the bottom) stop working. When the workspace switcher applet goes, so to does the ability to switch using hotkeys (ctr alt left/right).
Suspending then resuming the laptop usually fixes these problem. Sometimes however 2 suspends are needed to fully fix the menus. It is possible for the context menu on the desktop to be working after a suspend, but not the main menu (but not always). A second suspend/ resume fixes this. I also noticed that this happened one of the times I booted a lucid release candidate live CD on my machine. I'm not sure but this may have something to do with the fact that I installed using a release candidate live CD instead of the proper release. (I have done all the updates).
I just downloaded the Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS Install CD for the desktop. I am concerned that I have downloaded the wrong ISO or that the CD that I burned is not behaving properly. Unlike all of the other Ubuntu "Live CDs", this one doesn't offer you a choice of what Ubuntu does at Boot-up. There's no menu that asks what you'd like to do. This CD doesn't give you choices like:
- Test Drive Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer
- Install Ubuntu
- Test CD for Errors
- Test Memory
- Boot from Hard Disk
Instead, this CD just boots right to a Gnome desktop. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but it turns out the the CD is performing some actions behind my back that I don't like. All that I wanted to do was to check the CD for errors to make sure that it burned properly. I didn't want it installing on the system where I was doing the burning. Instead of giving me options at boot, the CD automatically loaded Gnome, and then proceeded to mount all of the drives on my system, and then attempted to establish connection to IP address 91.189.90.132. I didn't like that. Luckily my firewall is secure enough that it stopped this unauthorized outbound data traffic dead in its tracks. I used reverse DNS to look up the owner if IP address 91.189.90.132. Here's what I found:

Is this a Live CD, where you have some options about what to do at boot-up, or is this only an install CD? This information isn't clearly spelled out on the download page. this LiveCD taking control of my computer, mounting my drives, and then establishing contact with Canonical Ltd., without even giving me a menu option before doing so.
I just immigrate from Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.10 ( Ubuntu as OS Principal no Dual Boot ) I have a such problem with SKYPE, I talk with someone who had a webcam and after 5 - 7 mn it crash and the menu hide and everything even desktop background, and it shows a blank black screen I don't know what I have to do, I'm sick of tired of windows' blue screens

Skype started to work well. However, after I rebooted the system, all I get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I am able ot get to tty by doing ctrl+alt+f2 but am not sure how to proceed from the above. I also erased the above packages thinking that that might solve. But it hasnot solved the issue.
I am working on an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop. Installed UE 2.7. Need Skype working. Webcam works fine. Audio works fine. When I connect to a video call, the person I am calling can hear and see me, but while I can hear them, I can't see them.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Aspire One netbook, but everytime while booting, I am stuck at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I've tried reinstalling but to no help. I've also tried installing 9.10, which will boot, then upgrading to 10.04 which then produces the same problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Lucid Lynx on a medium-old system, Athlon 2200+ with an ATI video card. No problems during the install itself. The problem is that when I boot into the login screen, I get a bunch of blank boxes. If I move the mouse around, I can see various areas highlighted, but I can't actually see the menu options. I can type in my username and password to log in (not being able to see what I'm typing), but then the desktop panels are empty boxes - once again I can mouse over them to get empty drop down menus, but I can't see anything else.
I've had enough experience with Ubuntu in the past to do some troubleshooting myself. Usually I would just boot into a terminal, switch Xorg to use the vesa driver and go from there. However, a number of decisions in Lucid Lynx have made troubleshooting practically impossible.1 - No grub menu. No way for me to pick a safe boot option.2 - Install CD doesn't come with any rescue boot options.3 - Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and Ctrl-Alt-F1 to boot into a shell don't work.4 - the default filesystem is ext4, which means my old rescue CDs aren't likely to be of much help.Sigh. I understand that Ubuntu is trying to make things look pretty and all, but these user-friendly changes are making it near impossible to fix a problem like the one I have. I just downloaded a System Rescue Linux CD but it's kind of late to be trying it out now.
I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.
I downloaded Ubuntu Lucid...something onto a cd and I booted into it on my iMac G4. It brought me to a screen saying things like live is default press tab for more options etc and when I just press enter, the screen turns white, loads a few things, then it turns blank and after awhile, I hear the Ubuntu startup sound but my screen remains blank.

how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.
I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. Burned the .iso image, booted, and when I got the blank screen I suspected the Intel D101GGC motherboard using the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset had problemsI tried adding boot options (F6) such as vga=711 and xforcevesa and text. No joyOthers seemed to have gotten a successful install so I turned may attention to the CD, suspecting it was a bad download/burn, and downloaded 10.04 desktop again from mirror.pnl.gov/releases/. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just updated the kernel to fix nvidia video problem. But now I have problem of no sound. I think it may be unrelated to the upgrade of kernel because most or all of the symptoms were already present, or the upgrade may have complicated things even more. Another recent symptom in conjunction with this problem is that "restart" and "shutdown" from panel dropdown do not work -- they just log out. May or may not be related at all.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm on HP tx2000 Tablet PC, with nVidia GeForce 6150 Go onboard, 4GB of RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 Desktop. I keep getting a blank screen after boot splash when I'm on BATTERY POWER. Though I get a blank screen, the screen comes alive when I SUSPEND the laptop by closing the lid, and then RESUME the laptop. Then I can see the logon box and whole desktop.
Usually people get problem by suspending their laptops (usually the screen not coming back after resuming), but now I SOLVE the problem by suspending my laptop. Well like I said I can somehow get the screen right, but I really can't (and don't want to) suspend and resume my laptop every time I boot. Problem occurs REGARDLESS of type of display driver I use. nVidia proprietary, nouveau... whichever driver I use, I get the same conclusion.
When I hoover over toolbar menu entries like "System" then currently tooltips (with black background) appear like. "Change system appearance and behaviour, How can I disable these tooltips (for the standard Ubuntu menues only, if possible) ?
