I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Aspire One netbook, but everytime while booting, I am stuck at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I've tried reinstalling but to no help. I've also tried installing 9.10, which will boot, then upgrading to 10.04 which then produces the same problem.

I have a desktop with AMD Sempron 3000+, 1.2GB RAM, VIA S3G Unichrome Pro IGP, VIA SATA RAID controller based disks, PS/2 mouse and keyboard running Windows XP. Wanted to move to years ago favourite (linux based systems), I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 for i386 and am trying to install both using CD as well as USB. After the Ubuntu start-up menu for installation, I select install Ubuntu option, turn off 'quiet' so that I can see what happens. The screen goes blank dark with a flashing cursor at the top.
In the kernel messages, the see that it has detected the processor, set the clock, assigned the PS/2 keyboard to input3 and then says:
[1.911624] isapnp: no plug and play device found
After this, the system hangs. Keyboard doesn't work.
I have just updated to 10.04 on my Dell Insperon 8200 laptop, and all seems well with Linux.My problem is that although it shows in Grub Windows XP will not load. I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.I have tried to grub-mkconfig and grub-update, both of which reported successful results.However on reboot I still get a blank screen for windows.This was not an issue with 9.04 and 9.10.so I don't think it is the machine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.
Running 10.04 as the only OS on a HP desktop - been running fine for months. Did an update - probably hadn't done one for a couple of months - may be a red herring. The system appeared to crash while inactive. Trying to boot - I get the Ubuntu 10.04 screen for a short while then it goes to blank screen with a flashing cursor at the top - occasionally it will give me an error that /home is not ready - skip or manual fix. I have sda1 = ext4 root
sda2 = swap
sda3 = ext4 home
sdb1 = ntfs
I removed sdb1 from fstab as initially it was complaining about this drive not being ready. The error switched to complaining about /home. I am able to mount both of those filesystems with no problem manually. I ran mke3fs on /home (I forgot the -n parameter! but no problem as I have good backups) - same error - complains about /home not being available at boot even though I can always manually mount it from live cd or manual recovery. I can rebuild this system - and I may as it was upgraded from 9.10 - I may do a fresh 10.04, but I would like to fix the boot problem in case something like this happens again when I actually care about fixing it.I recreated the grub2 configs - I don't have the command to hand, something like: sudo update-grub --root-directory=/mnt/boot/grub /dev/sda
I'm using "sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 5000" or whatever the seconds is for the time I need it. It doesn't help if I use mem. Anyone know what's up or know a better program?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSlack 13.0 X sometimes fails to start after boot about 50% of the time. linux says "starting X11 session" then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor and absolutely nothing else. I can <ctrl>-<alt>-<F7> and get a text prompt, log in, and startx from a command prompt. After that, I can reboot once or twice and still get a graphic login, but will soon revert to the dumped condition. I have reinstalled X and KDE twice now as well as deleting my .kde folder. This condition started when I inadvertently ran out of disk space on my /home drive. Since then I have migrated /home to a larger drive and watch it's disk space very carefully.

I installed Win7 after Ubuntu (10.10). I attempted to reload grub so that I would be able to run them dual boot and now I can't load anything.
I followed the guide here: [url] and went threw it a couple of times now to make sure it wasn't user error.
I am using a live cd from 10.04 because it's the only one I have. Any chance that's why it isn't working properly? I wouldn't think so, but I assume that it's possible.
If that is the case; Any way to solve it without using the live cd? I cannot burn a new disk because I have to boot from disk to use my computer right now.
I just get a flashing cursor on a blank screen when I try to load.
I have just wiped my whole hard drive to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu on it, and now as soon as i power it up it passes the POST screen and black screen shows up with a flashing cursor. I bliv it should say no operating system and pick the USB which has Ubuntu installation on it.I have formated the hard drive to NTFS, the system is Samsung NC10.

When I turn my PC on GRUB comes up and I can select ubuntu or vista, vista works but when I try to boot ubuntu the screen goes black with a small flashing underscore in the top left and then just goes completely black, nothing else happens after this. I've tried reinstalling from the live cd but when I go install nothing happens and the screen goes black again. When I was installing I changed the boot to something like scsi?

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

I am a complete Linux newbie and I tried installing the latest release candidate (10.04) as a dual boot with Windows XP. The install seemed to go fine and it said it needed to reboot to finish the install. It rebooted and then displayed a series of errors on a DOS-like screen (which I wish I wrote down). When I realized that it was definitely hung, I then held the power button to shut it off. After that, all it does is boot to up to a blank/black screen with a cursor.The box is old and I was actually going to throw it away, but I figured this was a good opportunity to give Linux a try. At this point, I'm willing to go to either Windows or Ubuntu... I don't really care which. I actually just want to recover some files on the box

Once the PC is powered ON, the grub menu shows up, but when Ubuntu 10.10 is selected I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor on the top left corner and I have only option to force shutdown the CPU.ON selecting windows 7 i'm able to boot successfully and use the DVD drive without any problems.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed it from usb as the cd installation failed at the point where you decide which type of installation you want (lamp or samba, etc)the installation completed but when booting nothing happens, only a black screen with a blinking cursor. pressing the shift key or any other keys doesn't work.strangely when i boot from the usb flash drive again (and not from the hard drive) the server does boot and asks for the user name and password!i have chosen the guided lvm partition with 20% reserved for system files.my machine is an athlon xp 2GHz (32bit), 1GB, SATA hard drive, nvidia 6600 graphicsmy guess is that its a problem with grub and lvm.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen I fired up the installer, after asking to test the media (which I skipped) and starting up the actual installer (anakonda, akonadi, whatever the name was, can't remember now and too lazy to look it up), it seemed to start up fine, except I couldn't get the wizard to show up. I did see the cursor, and occasionally I would get the "searching for storage devices" message (I restarted it a few times to see if I would get it working), but nothing. I also tried random key presses (namely F12,F1-F4), and after some time got a message saying that I had to enter the root password, so I presumably got to the root password screen blind...? (meaning that the installer apparently is ther, I just don't see it?)
After several restarts, though, I managed to get the wizard visible (just luck?), so I went ahead with it, but apparently I messed it up, when I rebooted I didn't get the screen visible again, after some random keypresses I got to the login prompt but I obviously hadn't created any accounts, so :/ I tried booting from the DVD to the rescue mode and manually adduser-ing from the console, but when I tried logging on, it would just come up with some kinda bluetooth-related error message and then hang on there with only the background image on the screen. I didn't try the basic video driver thingy yet because this didn't seem like a video driver issue (well, not entirely anyways), and I need my 3D acceleration, so...
Basically, I'd be glad if anyone knows what's up with the installer, and if it's not fixable as such, would installing with the basic video driver and then installing the proprietary drivers afterwards be all right? Sorry for the wall-of-text, though, it's just one of those days, it's bedtime and I get carried away...

Same thing happens with Try Ubuntu without installing.. 2) Tried on Lenovo T410 and Dell 1330. issue exactly remains the same.3) Tried it on a VM Worksation 6.0, "This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 error is popping up". So thought its a Ubuntu x32 an compatibility, hence downloading the 64 bit now. Will burn and check it later.

Just curious if there is any sort of issues with Ubuntu and JBOD assignments. I had my 2 500GB hdd's as JBOD through my mobo BIOS/RAID Config and it didn't like it. It installed just fine and showed the hard drives separately. I really didn't think anything of it so I continued on.After the install completed successfully, and I rebooted the system, it came to a blank screen with a blinking cursor and wouldn't continue on. So I tried restarting a few times, no luck. Finally I was like "okay screw this, going to install with no RAID setup or JBOD setup." (had RAID issues last night. rabble rabble) Removed RAID configurations and BAM started right up..S. Semi-new to Linux/Ubuntu. Know the basics and what not, just not some of the more advanced stuff.Edit: Okay, so I restarted my computer and removed my USB drive (which I had installed Ubuntu from) and it didn't boot. So it was NOT an issue with JBOD. Guess I'll look for a resolution for that, though.

I did try booting to a LiveUSB in order to run update-grub, but then it occured I have no idea how to do this from a LiveUSB that will affect the internal HDD installation?
So I'm currently trying to reboot from Live USB, but that just seems to have locked up the PC on the white ubuntu logo. I'm afraid to hard reset it (been doing too much of that lately). How long should a Live USB take to shutdown? (been about 10 minutes so far ). It's not a persistent LiveUSB as far as I know, and I basically just booted to the desktop and then start the reboot cycle as soon as I realised I didn't know what I wanted to do .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.
I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an intel atom board (D410PT) and I can run livecds, liveusbs and even boot a grub4dos stick without issue, but install any 10.4 ubuntu variant and all I get is a black flashing cursor.It appears as if there is a grub2 incompatibility with this board, which is currently preventing me running a full ubuntu on it.I tried struggling on with a liveusb system with a rw partition but it's just not feasable for a home server as the lack of swap just bogs the machine down all the time.Grub-legacy no longer appears to be in the repos and neither does lilo (yeah, I really am that old-school that I could cope with lilo if necessary).What can be done about a system that doesn't like grub2? (syslinux is fine, but requires fat32, grub4dos works but doesn't like ext3/4, isolinux works but I don't want livecd, I want full install!)

When I got home and tried to boot it, it finishes the POST and then I get a blank screen with a cursor for a few seconds. The word "GRUB" then appears in the upper left hand corner and that's it. The system is hung and I have to power off.
I've seen a lot of discussion that 9.10 uses grub2. Any ideas how I get out of this? Do I need to downgrade to legacy grub?
