Ubuntu :: Blank Boxes In Login Screen (Lucid Lynx?

Jul 30, 2010

I installed Lucid Lynx on a medium-old system, Athlon 2200+ with an ATI video card. No problems during the install itself. The problem is that when I boot into the login screen, I get a bunch of blank boxes. If I move the mouse around, I can see various areas highlighted, but I can't actually see the menu options. I can type in my username and password to log in (not being able to see what I'm typing), but then the desktop panels are empty boxes - once again I can mouse over them to get empty drop down menus, but I can't see anything else.

I've had enough experience with Ubuntu in the past to do some troubleshooting myself. Usually I would just boot into a terminal, switch Xorg to use the vesa driver and go from there. However, a number of decisions in Lucid Lynx have made troubleshooting practically impossible.1 - No grub menu. No way for me to pick a safe boot option.2 - Install CD doesn't come with any rescue boot options.3 - Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and Ctrl-Alt-F1 to boot into a shell don't work.4 - the default filesystem is ext4, which means my old rescue CDs aren't likely to be of much help.Sigh. I understand that Ubuntu is trying to make things look pretty and all, but these user-friendly changes are making it near impossible to fix a problem like the one I have. I just downloaded a System Rescue Linux CD but it's kind of late to be trying it out now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Intel D101GGC Lucid Lynx 10.04 Blank Screen?

Jun 14, 2010

I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. Burned the .iso image, booted, and when I got the blank screen I suspected the Intel D101GGC motherboard using the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset had problemsI tried adding boot options (F6) such as vga=711 and xforcevesa and text. No joyOthers seemed to have gotten a successful install so I turned may attention to the CD, suspecting it was a bad download/burn, and downloaded 10.04 desktop again from mirror.pnl.gov/releases/. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Past Login Screen In 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Jun 11, 2010

I installed Ubuntu for the first time yesterday by running Wubi on Windows Vista Home Premium. For all of yesterday and up to lunchtime today Ubuntu was working fine. I followed the instructions on a forum post to remove Evolution Mail via the synaptic applications menu. I proceeded to log out of Ubuntu and reboot (I hoestly can't remember what for) Anyway, ever since I have not been able to log in to Ubuntu. I enter my username and password as normal and they are accepted, however moments the log in page displays again. This continues in an endless loop. The password is definitely correct because I get an authentication error if I enter anything else. I know I am not the only person experiencing this issue.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Hangs On Login?

May 20, 2010

When I try logging in using any user name, ubuntu just returns to the login screen. I cannot actually log in. I used the recovery mode to create a new login with password 123456, and the same thing happens. What could it be? Ubuntu worked just fine for a while, then DKMS started causing problems, I had errors with upgrades, software installs/uninstalls, then my sound went. I found a great fix for the sound (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting), the sound came back, but then I could not log back in again. I cannot find any help for this issue, and had to install 9.10 Karmic Koala, and that's what I have been using for the past couple of days.10.04 has been fairly buggy for me and I am considering staying with 9.10, or going to another Linux distro.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Cursor Is Invisible After Login With Lucid Lynx

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Samsung X360 laptop which uses the Intel GMA4500MHD for graphics. After I login, the mouse cursor is not visible. It's hidden, though you can see things highlighted when you click the mouse buttons. The "workaround" is for me to launch a Terminal and start typing. That seems to make the text cursor appear and the mouse cursor as well.

I booted the computer up with a spare 20"idescreen monitor on a portable desk to install Ubuntu and make sure all was well with the newly installed power supply and graphics card.It worked perfectly.I moved my old tower out from its slot under my desk and put the new Asus tower under there. I plugged it into my 23" widescreen monitor and booted the computer.Ubuntu (9.10) boots just fine... but the login screen is all boxes!! There are no characters, just little white boxes. I can put in my password and log in. Once logged in the system is fine - all characters display normally from within Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Lucid Server - Blank Screen During Install?

Apr 21, 2011

I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.

I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Displays Blank Screen After Boot Splash On Battery Power

May 6, 2010

I'm on HP tx2000 Tablet PC, with nVidia GeForce 6150 Go onboard, 4GB of RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 Desktop. I keep getting a blank screen after boot splash when I'm on BATTERY POWER. Though I get a blank screen, the screen comes alive when I SUSPEND the laptop by closing the lid, and then RESUME the laptop. Then I can see the logon box and whole desktop.

Usually people get problem by suspending their laptops (usually the screen not coming back after resuming), but now I SOLVE the problem by suspending my laptop. Well like I said I can somehow get the screen right, but I really can't (and don't want to) suspend and resume my laptop every time I boot. Problem occurs REGARDLESS of type of display driver I use. nVidia proprietary, nouveau... whichever driver I use, I get the same conclusion.

Ubuntu :: GUI Is Broken - Just Blank Screen After Login

Jan 28, 2010

Using Karma and kubuntu -single boot. When I restarted my machine, the login appeared as usual and I entered my usual password but it was not accepted . I tried several times including making sure that caps lock / num lock etc were not invoked.

I then rebooted into recovery mode and let it run its course. When I rebooted and input my login password, I can get a bit further. The login is accepted but the GUI opens with a blank wallpaper and the terminal prompt window open at the keevill@keevill-desktop.

The ls command shows the name of the files which are on the desktop but they are not visible on the GUI nor are any other icons for applications. It seems like the kubuntu GUI is broken or something. I tried uninstall and then re-install but just the same. If I am forced to re-install Ubuntu I guess this means I lose all my settings and applications will have to be all installed again ?? How can I avoid this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Login Screen Is Blank

Nov 1, 2010

I just got rid of my Dell P990 CRT and replaced it with a Samsung B2330H LCD. I got the resolution changed to 1920x1080 at 60hz through System/Preferences/Monitors and the new display looks great! There is one problem, though: the computer boots into a resolution that is not supported by the new monitor. As a result, the login screen is blank. The monitor puts a little floating message on the screen that says, "Optimum Resolution is 1920x1080..." When I start up, I hear the "bongo sound" and I hit ENTER, then enter my password, then ENTER again, and the computer desktop appears in 1920x1080 and all is well. But how do I get the login screen to appear in 1920x1080?

This is Ubuntu 10.4, using the Intel onboard card. Here's the output of lspci:

Code:

I have installed the Startup Manager, but it does not allow 1920x1080 to be selected. I have also tried using Startup Manager to select other resolutions, but the login screen is still blank.

Isn't there some trick to force the login screen to appear in a specific resolution using xrandr? What file does this command go into? Maybe my old configuration files from my Dell monitor are interfering?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - Displays Blank Login Screen?

Aug 13, 2011

I have opensuse 11.4 installed with both gnome and kde. These are the things I did before the problem:

1. changed the login screen to oxygen login screen

2. Then I logged off and when again logging in, I chose the session as Metacity.

But unfortunately, the the blank splash screen appeared and it didnt get into the desktop. Then I did a hard restart (By pressing the power button). Since then, I cannot login. The login screen is blank left only a active mouse pointer. Even booting into failsafe also didnt work.

By the way, I have chosen the option of directly logging in without password prompt at login. (during installation)

Only a week before i did a clean install since i corrupted the grub, dont wanna install again.

General :: Nagios 3.2.3 - Blank White Screen After Login

I'm relatively new at Linux, and I am trying to get Nagios to work correctly. I'm running CentOS if that matters. I think I followed the directions here correctly, but all I get is a blank white screen after I login. The documentation page works fine, but I don't see anything on the main http://localhost/nagios page. I have looked at other solutions to this problem (adding the correct path to the open_basedir in /etc/php.ini) and that still did nothing. Any Way to decode my httpd logs... Any time I refresh, I get these four errors from /var/log/httpd/error_log:

Ubuntu :: Change Default Runlevel 10.10 / Getting A Blank Screen At Login Time?

Dec 20, 2010

How do you change the default runlevel in Ubuntu 10.10? I need a solution that I can execute by editing text files; right now I'm accessing the Ubuntu filesystem by mounting it to another OS on a different hard drive.

The long and the short of it is that I'm getting a blank screen at login time. I suspect it's a driver issue (I have an Nvidia card) and it shouldn't be hard to fix... but I need a console. And no, I can't get in via Grub... my main OS is Slackware and Lilo is controlling the bootloader. So I need to be able to change the runlevel, and thus far a Google search has proved unenlightening.

Ubuntu :: GDM Login/switch User Screen Blank - Autologin Works

Jan 5, 2011

I've run into a strange problem with GDM that I haven't managed to find a solution for yet, either by trying myself or googling, and I have run out of good ideas. I'll just infodump here about the problem and what I've tried etc;

I installed Ubuntu on a new PC a few weeks ago, setting it up with autologin for my mom and a separate user for myself, using the on/off-icon menu in the top-right corner to switch to my own user and back as needed, and logging the user out when done. This worked quite well.

However, a few days ago, this stopped working; logging out or trying to switch now leaves me with a blank black screen, without even a mouse pointer (but not off, the backlight is on).

EDIT: To clarify, this is an issue that only affects the GDM login screen, but that affects it whenever it is used, wether it is on boot (when not set to autologin), after logging out, or when trying to switch user.

At this point, I can usually use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a textmode login, and Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the auto-logged in session (assuming I tried to switch, not logout).

I can't think of anything specific I did or installed around then that should be related in any way...

I tried disabling autologin and restarting gdm, which left me with the same black screen (which is still there after rebooting), instead of the expected login window. I managed to re-enable autologin by manually editing the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file, so that it would at least work for mom.

I've also tried to change which user is auto-logged in, thinking it might be a problem with my user account, but both users get an automatic session just fine when I restart gdm.

I thought it might be a problem with the video driver, but that's not the case - if I run zenity --info as root with DISPLAY set correctly, the dialog box appears on the screen just fine. It has no borders or titlebar (there's no windowmanager), and is apparently without keyboard focus, so since there's no visible mouse pointer I can't click the OK button... But since it appears, X is apparently up and running just fine, just has nothing to display other than a black background.

I tried purging and reinstalling gdm and gnome-session(-bin|-common), but that didn't help any.

Running ck-list-sessions after trying to switch indicates that there's a new session there, with session-type = 'LoginWindow', so it appears to think everything's fine.

Enabling debug output in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file did get me some more debug output in the gdm logs, but it didn't really tell me anything, there weren't any obvious problems that I could see.

After some looking around, I've guessed that it's supposed to be running gdm-simple-greeter, which I assume would display a login box; trying to run it manually doesn't work though (it's missing some environment variables, and trying to add them based on the abovementioned debug output doesn't really help).

Ubuntu :: Natty Login - With Ati Catalyst Control Center - Screen Goes Blank ?

Sep 1, 2011

I just did a fresh install of natty, installed a few programs along with the ati catalyst control center.

I am having serious login issues, here is what I do:

I am at the login screen right from start-up, type in username and passward and hit enter, screen goes blank, it appears I am logging in, ubuntu plays a sound and puts me back at the login screen. I do not get an "Authentication Failed" error like I would expect. Unable to login as myself or as root.

However, I am able to login if I select the "safe mode," I am not able to login under the normal mode or the ubuntu classic modes.

I suspect that this issue has to do with the ati proprietary drivers, after playing with the settings for a while in safe mode I am now able to login to the normal natty mode without any apparent issues.

Here is what I changed in ati catalyst control center to boot into natty mode:

I disabled the Xinerama and Tear Free options.

Under the 3D settings, I selected the "override application setting" for all the 3D settings I could.

I believe I still have some display issues as I am unable to drag windows from one display to another, my mouse is able to move just fine across displays though.

I also found that enabling Xinerama prevented me from logging into the ubuntu and ubuntu classic modes, but I was able to login to the ubuntu with no effects mode.
