since i installed 10.04 i have noticed constant and irritating tips which ubuntu keeps providing soon as the pointer rests just about anywhere.my irritation was further aggravated when i began using open office. simply exploring the menus to check up on its differences with MS office became quite a task. i had to constantly keep moving the cursor in order to be able to see what the main menus in the open office program had to say
When I hoover over toolbar menu entries like "System" then currently tooltips (with black background) appear like. "Change system appearance and behaviour, How can I disable these tooltips (for the standard Ubuntu menues only, if possible) ?
for some reason the ubuntu devs decided to disable tooltips for indicators (when you hover over a tray applet like rhythmbox and information is presented). is there any way to enable it in lucid?
Each time a cursor hovers above icons or application launcher in the panel, tooltips pop up immediately. It bothers. But I did not find where to switch them off. I found it for the task manager, but not the panel itself. Is it possible anyway?
I've been having an issue for the past several months where, when Compiz is enabled, items with tooltips will not show the tooltip when hovered over until I move the mouse slightly. To see a demonstration of this, go here. Note that this does not happen when Metacity is enabled instead of Compiz. The other part of this issue is that some dropdown menu items will not appear until I mouse over them, similarly to the problem with tooltips. You can see a brief demonstration of that in the final few seconds of the first video, but it can be seen in more detail here. Despite the title, the problem appears in both Wine and native applications.Similarly to the first problem, this issue does not occur when Metacity is enabled in place of Compiz.
It took me a while to find a post that solved my problem, so I thought I'd try to make it easier for others with the same problem to find the solution. If you are using Skype with a dark themed lucid lynx 10.04, you may find that your Skype menus appeardark and unreadable, and that tooltips (when you move your mouse over a contact) appear pale and unreadable. You can find the solution here:
I have Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome. Whenever I put in a blank CD/DVD an icon on the desktop appears named "Blank CD/DVD" and a window appears asking me what I want to do with it. How do I disable the window and the icon from the desktop?

I want to disable Usplash in ubuntu 9.10 so that when i boot up there are not graphics and I want to disable a graphical login. So that when it asks me to login it is a text-based login. How would I do this?
i disabled the gdm from RC start-up scripts so now my ubuntu will boot only in text-mode (terminal) ,but what i need to know is how can i run a single application for ex. Firefox in gui mode ,by keeping gdm disabled ,i tried using startx but it did not solved my issue .
Trying to disable tap to click on my 9.10 install on an MSI wind. Ive tried using the gconf-editor and can see that the value has changed (unchecked) but the touch to click is still enabled. I have rebooted with no change. I do not see any options in the mouse settings either.
I need to disable DST (Daylight Savings Time) in Ubuntu Feisty 7.04.
I know that the daylight savings rules can be found with: $ zdump -v America/New_York | grep 2010 America/New_York Sun Mar 14 06:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 01:59:59 2010 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=-18000 America/New_York Sun Mar 14 07:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Mar 14 03:00:00 2010 EDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-14400 America/New_York Sun Nov 7 05:59:59 2010 UTC = Sun Nov 7 01:59:59 2010 EDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-14400 America/New_York Sun Nov 7 06:00:00 2010 UTC = Sun Nov 7 01:00:00 2010 EST isdst=0 gmtoff=-18000
I noticed that the installation doesn't mention DST as an option. Does Ubuntu allow for operating without DST? If so, how can I disable it?
So I just installed Ubuntu on my second laptop, however I ran into a problem. The F9 key is going crazy. I'm not exactly sure what is causing it (I've already popped off and cleaned the keys) but if I could find a way to just disable it I'd be very happy.
First time user of ubuntu on a resurected laptop.Upon boot up, I get an irritating series of beeps as if a button is being pushed down.I'm guessing it's the 'W' as I'm not able to use it after I log-in.Looking for simple instructions on how to disable the 'W'.
it seems a bit redundant to have an icon in the tray for Evolution and a Menu that serves the exact same function as that icon. Is there anyway I can disable the icon?
I have lightly used previous versions of Ubuntu, and this "feature" was not present. But now, with 10.04. I cant install the software I want to install. Namely Steam under Wine. I know I could do the play on linux deal, but I would really like to disable this "feature" entirely. Can I do that, and how?
I want to be able to disable CPU scaling, whenever I want. The reason is that I run some timing tests, and I want the results to be reproducable (ie the CPU running at the same frequency). I have tried the following on 9.10 and 10.04 (both amd64). I use rcconfig to disable "on demand" (from [URL] but then when I use cpufreq-info tool I get:
I make ubuntu usb via startup disk creator. When I run ubuntu usb, it ask me Install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I close it then utunbu usb go to desktop, it disturbing me. How to disable it ?
After the nightmare of installing Ubuntu10.04 as my second os, with windows 7, dual booting using grub 2 ( GRUB PUTS NOT FOUND). I am using wubi and the win 7 bootloader, I still have the splash screen of grub 2 after I select Ubuntu off the win7 boot loader. I really don't think I need this. Could I get rid of the grub 2 loader, it really doesn't serve any purpose except take up boot up time? go easy, it took me a while to figure out how to shorten the DEFAULT boot load time in grub 2
Using ubuntu 10.04 32-bit.I would like to disable or remap (preferably) the F11 key action which toggles full-screen mode.Disabling the feature has no effect. I can add a shortcut say mod4-F11 and that shortcut then becomes effective, but the F11 action remains.
I want to disable only PDF thumbnails not the png, jpg or any other image format. In gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/preferences there is option only to disable all thumbnails. Is there any way to disable only pdf thumbnails
My goal is to prevent gnome from mounting and opening up a file browser when any device is plugged in (USB, CD/DVD) for a Desktop User account. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook RemixI modified several settings in Nautilus (Edit --> Preferences --> Media (tab). I Selected "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion" and unchecked "Browse media when inserted".I restarted the system, but when I plug in a USB mass storage device the file browser window still appears and the device is mounted.I dug down into gconf and found the following registry keys that I believe are of interest:
Has anybody run into this problem and found a solution? Modifying the keys I mentioned above worked for everyone else that has asked the "disable automounting" question (that I've found). Some very old posts mentioned gnome-volume-manager, but it is not installed on my system.
EDIT:This seems to only happen when the Netbook Launcher is started. If Netbook Launcher is removed from the list of startup programs and the system is restarted, I can insert devices without getting a pop-up window and without the device being mounted.
