When I insert a blank DVD into my laptop, I expect that ubuntu lucid will notice, chugg a bit, and make that blank available to Brasero for writing or any of a number of similar options. This does not happen.
ANALYSIS:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been an Ubuntu user for a few years now, and in the previous versions I have made numerous bootable USB devices, I always thought it was so useful, and I never have had any problems.I just installed version 9.10 the other day, and it seems to be working well, but the USB bootable disk creator is messed up big time.When i try to select an .iso image to add to the source disk image area, it is just unresponsive. And when i try to do something else, like format a USB device, it says i cannot format because the device cannot mounted. But i know its mounted because i can access the contents of the drive.Anyways this was a huge disappointment as I was showing a friend how useful the UBUNTU tools are, and it does this. Does anyone know anything about this bug?

my 9.04 64 bit ubuntu machine is having some major stuttering issue, as in it can't stay on track and doesn't respond to keys at certain times, the normal flashing text bar is flashing very quickly and very eradically as well. I reinstalled ubuntu keeping my /home on a separate partition, and then upgraded to 9.10 thinking that'd fix it, it didn't.at this point i don't know what's happening, My windows partition is fine.

I ran the simple installation: Code: lynx --source [URL] Everything downloaded and installed so I logged off, ran xwmconfig and set it to gnome and then tried starting my xserver and my screen turns black with a single white dash in the corner. My keyboard doesn't respond (the lock lights won't turn on) and I'm stuck on this black page. I tried changing xwmconfig back to KDE and the same thing happens
View 14 Replies View RelatedAll of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds.Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check?This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

I have a Slackware 13.0 server that is not replying to icmp pings. However, I have double checked that /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all is set to 0. The weird thing is I can run nc -v slackware 22 from any computer on my lan and the banner comes up just fine. The nic is on the same netmask and broadcast as all the other computers on my lan. I can log into it as well, it just doesn't respond to pings. I can even ping other computers and get replies just fine when pinging from inside the Slackware server.
I have even added an iptables INPUT rule for -p icmp -j ACCEPT. Although I've never had to do this. I ran tcpdump -vv icmp and I can see ping requests coming into the computer, however slackware simply doesn't respond. What could be causing this? A corrupt arp cache? It's been happening for more than a few hours so I wouldn't think so. How can I view the arp cache table? How do I clear it?
Yesterday something has happened with power supply, so 2 of 3 PCs has shut down. And now my debian pc doesn't respond to multimedia (volume to be precise) keys, leds also doesn't work. Other keys are fine. Tried xev, but it doesn't respond to multimedia keys either. I have dual boot with Win7 on this machine, and it works fine with multimedia keys.

My name is ken on my system. Whenever I try to use CTRL or Shift Insert to copy or paste text, i get a dialog box that comes up and says, Could not find "/home/ken/~", see attachment, even after I click on the OK button. It used to work a long long time ago.It does not copy or paste anything. I'm on Karmic. If its a keybinding where the heck is it located. I'm sort of a noob.

When I go to open the DVD tray by pressing the eject key on my Apple keyboard, the tray opens and closes. It doesn't stay open. When I insert a CD or DVD, it doesn't show up on my computer. i have to restart my computer for it to show up in the Computer window. Also, when i eject a CD or DVD, I still see the contents of it on my computer even though the disk has been ejected. I pressed reload under the view menu and it still displays the contents.

I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Aspire One netbook, but everytime while booting, I am stuck at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I've tried reinstalling but to no help. I've also tried installing 9.10, which will boot, then upgrading to 10.04 which then produces the same problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Lucid Lynx on a medium-old system, Athlon 2200+ with an ATI video card. No problems during the install itself. The problem is that when I boot into the login screen, I get a bunch of blank boxes. If I move the mouse around, I can see various areas highlighted, but I can't actually see the menu options. I can type in my username and password to log in (not being able to see what I'm typing), but then the desktop panels are empty boxes - once again I can mouse over them to get empty drop down menus, but I can't see anything else.
I've had enough experience with Ubuntu in the past to do some troubleshooting myself. Usually I would just boot into a terminal, switch Xorg to use the vesa driver and go from there. However, a number of decisions in Lucid Lynx have made troubleshooting practically impossible.1 - No grub menu. No way for me to pick a safe boot option.2 - Install CD doesn't come with any rescue boot options.3 - Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and Ctrl-Alt-F1 to boot into a shell don't work.4 - the default filesystem is ext4, which means my old rescue CDs aren't likely to be of much help.Sigh. I understand that Ubuntu is trying to make things look pretty and all, but these user-friendly changes are making it near impossible to fix a problem like the one I have. I just downloaded a System Rescue Linux CD but it's kind of late to be trying it out now.
I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.
I downloaded Ubuntu Lucid...something onto a cd and I booted into it on my iMac G4. It brought me to a screen saying things like live is default press tab for more options etc and when I just press enter, the screen turns white, loads a few things, then it turns blank and after awhile, I hear the Ubuntu startup sound but my screen remains blank.
View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)
What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.
I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. Burned the .iso image, booted, and when I got the blank screen I suspected the Intel D101GGC motherboard using the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset had problemsI tried adding boot options (F6) such as vga=711 and xforcevesa and text. No joyOthers seemed to have gotten a successful install so I turned may attention to the CD, suspecting it was a bad download/burn, and downloaded 10.04 desktop again from mirror.pnl.gov/releases/. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.

I think it may be unrelated to the upgrade of kernel because most or all of the symptoms were already present, or the upgrade may have complicated things even more. Another recent symptom in conjunction with this problem is that "restart" and "shutdown" from panel dropdown do not work -- they just log out. May or may not be related at all.

I'm on HP tx2000 Tablet PC, with nVidia GeForce 6150 Go onboard, 4GB of RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 Desktop. I keep getting a blank screen after boot splash when I'm on BATTERY POWER. Though I get a blank screen, the screen comes alive when I SUSPEND the laptop by closing the lid, and then RESUME the laptop. Then I can see the logon box and whole desktop.
Usually people get problem by suspending their laptops (usually the screen not coming back after resuming), but now I SOLVE the problem by suspending my laptop. Well like I said I can somehow get the screen right, but I really can't (and don't want to) suspend and resume my laptop every time I boot. Problem occurs REGARDLESS of type of display driver I use. nVidia proprietary, nouveau... whichever driver I use, I get the same conclusion.
Lucid is not in testing but it's released.It seems it works now, with all desktop effects activated and switching users and closing sessions.The only thing I still don't know is which screensaver can I use if removing gnome-screensaver?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used brasero to blank the cd. It ejected the cd. Few days later i inserted the cd to write something, but ubuntu doesn't detect it. I had to use windows to burn some files on the cd. Then ubuntu detected it. I started brasero and it asked me to erase cd before burning onto it. I accepted and brasero erased the disc and started burning (there was no problem between erasing and burning , cd was detectet all the time). Is there any way to detect a blank cd?
