Ubuntu :: Enable Tooltips For Indicators In Lucid?
May 5, 2010
for some reason the ubuntu devs decided to disable tooltips for indicators (when you hover over a tray applet like rhythmbox and information is presented). is there any way to enable it in lucid?
It took me a while to find a post that solved my problem, so I thought I'd try to make it easier for others with the same problem to find the solution. If you are using Skype with a dark themed lucid lynx 10.04, you may find that your Skype menus appeardark and unreadable, and that tooltips (when you move your mouse over a contact) appear pale and unreadable. You can find the solution here:
I've tried to google it, but couldn't find any results. The only instructions I've found (Appearance -> Interface) are for older versions, and no longer valid. Where do I enable this option? I'm trying to learn the Dvorak keyboard, and Ctrl+S is a little akward
since i installed 10.04 i have noticed constant and irritating tips which ubuntu keeps providing soon as the pointer rests just about anywhere.my irritation was further aggravated when i began using open office. simply exploring the menus to check up on its differences with MS office became quite a task. i had to constantly keep moving the cursor in order to be able to see what the main menus in the open office program had to say
I am running Wubi 64 bit Lucid on a Toshiba Satellite A215 S7422. In Karmic I was able to use desktop effects on max, with cube desktops and all the bells. I can no longer enable them, and after running Compiz-check I received a fail on "Checking for hardware/setup problems." The given reason was "Software Razterizer in use." Any idea what the rasterizer is/does? Would disabling it affect any other processes?
PS: If anyone can link to an article explaining how to switch from W7 Bootloader to Grub 2 (Which I already have installed)
The reason why I'm pissed because so many people out there that use Linux aways say Microsoft sucks. But I have more problems with Linux, at least with Microsoft problems I can solve. Now since I got that out of my system, here's my issue.
I just installed LTS 10.04 everything was working fine, I have an ATI 5700 card installed so I installed the ATI drivers not the open stuff. After install the drivers worked perfectly no problems. After several days of using the computer, I said I'll run some updates. I did so and rebooted my computer and BOOOM now my ATI drivers do not work. I can't enable desktop effects, can't use cube etc. Not only that but if I go to the prior build it won't work there either. If this was windows 7, I would just reinstall and it would work.
Luckily for me I made a image of my Ubuntu 10.04 and did a restore and everything went back to normal because I restored the image prior to the update. Now just for kicks I ran the updates again to be sure the updates did indeed break the vid drivers. Yep, after the updates ran, reboot, BOOM broke again. What gives? Is it the kernel updates? If so then I guess I'll run updates without updating the kernel. By the way I did try to install the drivers that come with Ubuntu but that work either. I guess I have to do the restore again. I rather use the ATI drivers vs the open stuff.
Questions are the updates unstable? If it is then why release? Can anyone provide any solutions? Should I run updates but skip Kernal changes? If not then what is blowing up the drivers?
how to enable remote desktop by command line in 10.4 lucid? The command sudo gconftool-2 -s -t bool/desktop /gnome/remote_access/enabled true doesn't work, because when I open /system/pref/remote desktop, it is still not activated.
I am running Lucid Lynx kernel 2.6.32.24. Soon after the latest kernel update I noticed that Virtualbox would not launch when I clicked on the icon. I have searched the Internet for days, tried numerous possible fixes, over hours of effort, but can't get it working at all. Ubuntu Lucid runs great!! There are no errors just a few blinks of the hard drive indicator and nothing. Is there anyone out there that has seen this same issue?
When I hoover over toolbar menu entries like "System" then currently tooltips (with black background) appear like. "Change system appearance and behaviour, How can I disable these tooltips (for the standard Ubuntu menues only, if possible) ?
I installed 10.4 a good few weeks ago and was worried when I didn't see the volume controls in the main panel, so I took someone's advice and added an indicator applet, you know the one with the volume and mail symbols? Today then my computer just switched off when it had insufficient power in the battery (I didn't realise it wasn't plugged in) but I got no warning that it was low on power.
Two things then, is there a better applet for volume and one at all for the battery so I can get some kind of notifications?
When I installed Lucid a couple months ago, I removed the sound/messages indicator from my panel and somehow installed a single sound indicator in my panel. Now, I want to revert that.I put the message/sound indicator back, but for the life of me, I can't remember how to get rid of the single sound indicator anymore...The one I want to remove is highlighted red in the attached screenshot. I don't remember how I got it there in the first place (I found some tutorial online and did it), and now I can't get rid of it no matter what I do
Each time a cursor hovers above icons or application launcher in the panel, tooltips pop up immediately. It bothers. But I did not find where to switch them off. I found it for the task manager, but not the panel itself. Is it possible anyway?
I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04)I have a wireless card in my PC that I only use very occasionally so I uncheck the Enable Wireless option on the network tool icon to stop the system attempting to connect to my wireless network. That works fine for that session, but the system does not seem to remember this setting and attempts to connect the wireless each time I log in! Is this a feature or a bug? and does anyone know a way of defaulting the wireless option to off
I've been having an issue for the past several months where, when Compiz is enabled, items with tooltips will not show the tooltip when hovered over until I move the mouse slightly. To see a demonstration of this, go here. Note that this does not happen when Metacity is enabled instead of Compiz. The other part of this issue is that some dropdown menu items will not appear until I mouse over them, similarly to the problem with tooltips. You can see a brief demonstration of that in the final few seconds of the first video, but it can be seen in more detail here. Despite the title, the problem appears in both Wine and native applications.Similarly to the first problem, this issue does not occur when Metacity is enabled in place of Compiz.
I wonder is it possible to make capslock and/or scroll lock indicators blink when you have unread message or so. Like in nofication area (like when envelope in notification area becomes blue).
I use to be able to add applets to the top panel in gnome in previous versions of Ubuntu (<11.04). I understand the Unity environment, which I generally like, has changed how one adds things to the top panel. Now we have indicators? Is there a good description of the functionality of these indicators: how to add/remove indicators, where one can find new indicators, etc. I ask because I have been having trouble adding indicators. I tried to add the system monitor indicator. I initially added it by installing it with apt-get. But every time I reboot it has disappeared and I have to run it again from the menu. I can't figure out how to make it permanent.
Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend. Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's. Everything worked fine before the upgrade. Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R. Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?
I use 4 languages on my Gnome Desktop, that's the max that they allow! I also use flags as language indicators on my gnome-panel. The problem is that, I am using two Indian languages and the flags for these two is the same.. (The Indian one!) I would like to use custom flags for these two languages.. I know that I have to place them in /usr/share/pixmaps/ ..... But, how do I ensure that these two languages target two different files? Presently both the languages are using the in.png file...
Launchers indicators only work when I check the "Mix launchers and applications" box under behaviour/taskbar menu option. I already set the class of the launchers with the "grab" button in the "modify launcher menu"
I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.
After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I did restart, though. For both the weather and CPU frequency indicators, the terminal said:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/fr.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_sour ce_Sources Hash Sum mismatchI don't know how to get around this
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
I recently upgraded from Karmic to Lucid via the Update Manager. I would like to upgrade further by switching from 32 Bit to 64 Bit. I downloaded the Lucid 64 Bit ISO and wrote an install disk. When I reboot the computer with the install disk nothing happens.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10 and when checking the version using system|about it says:
Code:
You are using Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat - released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012. Now, I run some shellscripts and they check the distro. lucid-wx is not in supported versions but lucid is. Where can I change the lucid-wx to lucid?
Is it somewhere in a textfile or so? I cannot find it in /etc/issues or using man -n of man -a or so.
