I would like to set Windows to be selected by default when i start my system (which has both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 installed).Tried some guides online but they suggested for me to change a file in /boot/grub/ named menu.lst but there is no such file on my system...
i just reinstalled linux on partition (ubuntu) and i remember last time i did it i was able to set windows as default load and with a timer so that after 3 seconds windows would load and not ubuntu default right now is ubuntu load after 10 seconds.
setting windows as the default OS when dual booting ubuntu. Have gone into system settings on both windows and ubuntus and chosen the option to boot windows vista first, but it has not worked.
I managed somehow to successfully install a dual boot with Ubuntu 9.02 and Windows XP. Ubuntu was on a PATA drive and the WinXP was on a SATA drive. The SATA drive was configured to boot first. As I was having problems with Ubuntu I booted into WinXP, re-formatted the PATA drive, then restarted the computer and installed Ubuntu 9.10. It all went well.I rebooted the machine and the following message was on the screen:
I rebooted, changed the boot order so that the PATA disk (Ubuntu) started first, then the SATA(WinXP). Ubuntu loaded up the dual boot screen.I chose WINXP, but I was greeted with a black screen.I rebooted again and chose to load Ubuntu, which it did without a hitch.what I should do to restore my access to WinXP? Or should I start again? If so, how?
When you install a dual-boot of Ubuntu, one of the frustrating things that you'll immediately notice is that Ubuntu is now set as the default operating system in the Grub loader. There's an easy way to switch back to using Windows as the default.
There are many way to change bootup options
This is one way to change bootup option
First you have to go system --> Administration and see for Startupmanager if it is not their
Now go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and type
sudo apt-get install startupmanager It will ask for your password give it now It will ask Do you want to continue {y/n}? Type "y" and press Enter After installation is over close the terminal.
Now once again you have to go system --> Administration ---> now you will see a new Startupmanager button, just press that startupmanager button it will open a window
Enter your password to perform administrative task "now you have to give your password and press enter now you will see startUp-Manager window in that you will see Timeout
Timeout in seconds: by default it is 10 second if you want, you have to increase the second 10,20 etc.,
Default operating system: by default it is Ubuntu
if you want to change click the Tab and you will see five options that is
Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35.22 generic(Recovery mode) Memory test (memtest86+) memory (memtest 86+, serial console 115200) Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1)
and now you go to Microsoft windows xp professional (on/ext/sda1) and click it now it will change Ubuntu to windows just press close tab after closing that window you have to restart your system just wait for 10 second and see now your system will boot windows xp by default
Just installed Slackware 13.37 and am trying to get dual boot to work properly. I have edited /etc/lilo.conf to point the Windows section to what I believe should be the correct partition (/dev/sda2) Here is the relevant section
Code:
# LILO configuration file # Windows bootable partition config begins other = /dev/sda2
[code]....
I have mounted /dev/sda2 to /ntfs-c as suggested during install and when I browse through there I see the files from my windows setup so it is in fact the correct partition. When I load Windows on boot, however, it is pointing to the recovery partition (/dev/sda1).
I am unable to load Ubuntu onto computer as dual boot or inside windows. Thus scanned the CD and found it has 23 errors. Are these files suppose to be on the CD?casper, .disk, install, install, isolinux, pics, pool, pressed, autorun, md5sum.
I was struggling how to phrase the question (in the subject) so let me clarify... I wish to install Windows 2000 and then do Ubuntu, on the same PC. I never had a dual boot before but I understand that it goes automatically (after a short time) to default Windows if Ubuntu is not chosen (on the boot up screen), correct? If so, if there's a "countdown" of sorts, is there a way to disable it? I wish to have control over that aspect, have unlimited time during that boot "choose one" screen.
A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition dev/sda2 Windows NTFS dev/sda3 Windows FAT
I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. The following is the content of my grub.conf file (FYI):
I can choose which kernel I want to boot by default, instead of having to hold the shift key down every time I want to choose the kernel I want to boot into. I am running multiple kernels.
i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
On reboot the GRUB2 installer shows me the options for OS - I select Windows XP and then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor - and nothing.. I CTRL ALT DEL and it reboots back to GRUB2 and I select UBUNTU and I log in. This is the first time I have tried to reboot Windows XP after fresh install of UBUNTU
My wifi card is DWA-525 I found the drivers and compiled them using make and make install How do I remove the default driver rt2800pci and load the new one?
I have upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 but now can't boot into win vista, ubuntu and vista are on grub but vista will not load, I have tried sudo upgrade-grub which seemed to work but had no effect on loading windows. I did think of using win dvd to fixmbr but only as last resort, I entered the commands suggested by nitstorm and got "command not found". Followed link to source forge.net and test disk, followed the instructions to install and run test disk which repaired the boot sector in the vista partition, I can now choose to boot into win or ubuntu.
I had karmic koala installed a few months back, but wasn't using it cause i didn't have time to properly configure it. Last night, i was thinking of probing around with it a little and found an update for it and went ahead and installed it. After rebooting, GRUB refused to load any of the OSes, but i was still able to access ubuntu with a reduced graphics option (safe mode?). Tried reinstalling etc etc but nothing worked. In my frustration, i whipped out my windows CD and deleted the partition for ubuntu.
Now, after the loading of bios, i get "error: no such partition. grub rescue>".Is there anyway i can get delete grub and get my vista to boot normally? or would i need to reformat everything again? maybe someone can point me in the right direction if a similar thread had been posted before.
Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.
Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)
I have a laptop that has a dual boot of Windows7/Ubuntu10.04. Ubuntu loads fine, but Windows 7 does not. It shows up in the Grub, but it will not load. I assume that the boot loader was messed up somehow, but I am not experienced at deciphering the boot info file. I was hoping someone might be able to take a look at the file and tell me what the issue might be, and also which part of the text indicates the problemBoot File:
Code: Boot Info Script 0.60 from 17 May 2011 ============================= Boot Info Summary: ===============================
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 side by XP pro. When systems boots up it goes to a screen listing 5 choices to boot into. Ubuntu first and XP pro last. I set the delay start time to 30 sec. and the XP pro as the default OS using the start up manager. THe default delay works and waits for a key press, but the order of the list has not changed and the highlighted OS (ubuntu) is what starts if no key is pressed. How can I fix this?
eth0 is the default route, and eth3 is being used for something else. So what I want to do is load balance browsing between eth1 and eth2. I've added all of the routes in the LARTC guide, but the command to enable the load balancing:
Quote:
ip route add default scope global nexthop via $P1 dev $IF1 weight 1 nexthop via $P2 dev $IF2 weight 1 obviously involves creating a new default route. Since I'll be using Squid to push the traffic through the relevant line, how can I set up a load-balanced link for eth1 and eth2 without changing the existing default route on the server?
I am now dual booting between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 When i turn on my computer it goes to a GNU Grub screen where i can choose an OS to boot, in 6 seconds it auto chooses default. How to i change the default from Ubuntu to Windows? I have tried to edit the grub.cfg file but it wont let me [URL] i need the .NET framework for a lot of my studies so i need to default into Windows
I recently installed Ubuntu and I am dual booting it with Windows 7. I showed it to my friend and he likes it. He wants me to dual boot his computer with Ubuntu, also.We were wondering if there was a way to configure GRUB and that stuff so that it doesn't go to the GRUB boot screen when you start your computer where you pick an OS. We were wondering if you could set a default OS that the computer automatically booted to, unless you press a button at startup, and then you could get to GRUB to pick a different OS.
The reason being is because his whole family uses the computer, and we don't want to confuse them with GRUB every time they start up the computer. We just want the computer to boot to Win7 by default, but being able to boot into Ubuntu if you press a button to get to GRUB when booting.
Everything is on my secondary (left) monitor. I want my primary (right) monitor to have the toolbars and default stuff on it. Is it possible? I haven't seen it on the settings and I've searched around but all posts are like 2007-2008 which have different layouts of solutions which don't work or aren't the same.
I am getting a strange font problem (see attached screenshot) for a user logging in over VNC Server, I am also logged in over VNC however I am no experiancing any problems... This was the case on CentOS 5.3 and on 5.4. I have tried removing the .vnc dir in the users home dir and re running vncserver so that it recreates it, I found this in the logs:
1. (nautilus:14718): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically 2.loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly. 3.This probably means there was an error in the creation of: 4.'/etc/pango/pango.modules' 5. You should create this file by running pango-querymodules. 6.Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
I've Googled myself silly and I cannot find a dang thing on how to install. I've got a Dell Dimension 4700 with the Emuzed TVT3 Dual TV Tuner, and I've dual booted with Mythbuntu for use with MythTV. Though I have been unable to find any way to install the capture card. I have gone into the settings (and even after reading the wiki), I'm not 100% sure what to select. Not to mention, where it says probed, it shows failed to load.
I recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>
