Slackware :: Installing Packages (bittornado) In /usr Dir?

May 13, 2010

I installed Slackware 13 last night and have been trying to get bittornado to properly work. Some background info, I have my partitions set up as follows:

Partition 1: /
Partition 2: /usr/local
Partition 3: /home
Partition 4: swap

I unzipped the tar.gz file and made a package using makepkg, and then installed it. Afterwords, trying to run "btlaunchmanycurses" or "btlaunchmanycurses.py" doesn't do anything. Further examining shows me that it installed the package to my / directory. Shouldn't packages be installed somewhere in my /usr dir? I'm new to linux, I spent some time with it a couple years ago but haven't done anything since.

Slackware :: Compiling And Installing The Packages?

Jan 24, 2010

I am in need of some more clear information about compiling and installing various applications in Slackware. I mean, i am not that new in Linux world, but i am not used to having to check for dependencies on my own and making Slackware packages myself. Things i would like to know more about and would be these:

a) is there some magical way you use to find out what dependencies a package has? I would appreciate as much information in this field as much as i can get. As now if i download source of some application i have completely no idea about what it needs from my system to function properly or where to look for this information. I think there should be more "correct way" than goggling for it...

b) I know about nice site SlackBuilds.org that it is, but lets say i want to install application A, and there is written, that application A requires application B, which requires application C, and this one needs application D. So now i have to spend good half of a day getting and compiling dependencies for one application, i mean common there has to be a quicker way to do this... at least some tool that would let me build some kind of ques that would be processed automatically or some kind of trick... So if you know some focuses under your sleeve, then please oh please do share

c) I would also like to know more about optimizing Slackware for boot time and general performance (but it's not that important, there are a lot of walls of text about this in Google world).

Slackware :: Pros/Cons Installing From Source Versus Packages

Mar 15, 2011

At work / home / laptops I have about 5 slackware machines. I have always tended to install new packages on each machine from source, generally using slackbuilds when available. I thought I would try 'libreoffice' and reading alien-bobs blog I deduced that a full from source install might be pretty difficult, so I followed his advice and just took the package (.txz file) and used installpkg. To my slight surprise this installed and ran perfectly.

Now I'm wondering if someone would clarify under what circumstances you can just take the slackware package from one machine to another and install. More generally I guess what are the main advantages of building from source. Is it mainly about availability of all the required dependencies?

Fedora Installation :: Way Of Downloading Some Extra Packages

Jul 13, 2010

if there is a way of downloading some extra packages and including some extra repositories that will automatically install during the main installation? With the option of a few settings being saved too... like for those that are used to windows having the gnome menu on the bottom.

I am promoting and convincing a lot of people to try Linux and I always recommend fedora as the OS of choice. I have no interest in creating my own distro, because I love Fedora. I just want to make sure these users can have all the codecs and little extras that makes computing fun without being a geek.My main issue is when I wipe their HDD and install Fedora, I then have to repeat the same tweaks and installs every time. This is my 7th time doing the exact same install and am looking for a quicker way.

Ubuntu :: How To Install Another Desktop Without Extra Packages

Mar 3, 2011

I want to know how to install KDE on Ubuntu and Gnome on Kubuntu.
The commands
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
are not the solution, because they install all distro packages, and I want only the base of desktops KDE and Gnome.

I can install LXDE with
apt-get install lxde
instead of
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

I can install Xfce with
apt-get install xfce4
instead of
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
However, I could not do the same with KDE and Gnome.

Debian :: Why Extra Packages (Exim) Installed On System

Oct 17, 2010

Install One :
Installed Debian Squeeze onto my laptop using the netinst cd. During installation, I did not have access to the internet and installed "Standard System" during tasksel.

Install Two :
Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".

Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?

Programming :: Extract Extra Packages In A Separate File?

Mar 6, 2009

I have two files containing list of packages using

Code:

dpkg --get-selections > file-name
command.
package-a.txt

[code]......

Now I would like to create a third file which contains only those packages which are present in package-a.txt but NOT in package-b.txt. The file should look like this:

Code:

package2
package4

Note: The world "install" is also to be removed for all packages. Using diff command I could get something like this:

Code:

temp# diff -yb package-a.txt package-b.txt | grep "<"
package2 install <
package4 install <
<
temp#

But not sure how to remove instances of "install" and "<".

Ubuntu Installation :: Include Extra Packages In LiveCD Image?

Aug 12, 2010

how to add packages to an existing Ubuntu ISO or LiveCD (Think like slipstreaming Windows Service Packs into Windows installation CDs, if that helps). I want to add things such as more games or the restricted extras plugins so that I don't have to go get them every time I install the OS on someone's computer, things like that. Not as important, but if it would be possible to remove packages

PS I'm not necessarily looking for a specific version, but I'm currently running 9.10 on one machine and 10.04 (soon to be 10.10) on another. A guide for any Ubuntu distro would be fine though. I'm just as interested in learning the theory of it as I am the actual execution.

Debian :: Installing I386 Packages Prompts Removal Of Amd64 Packages

Apr 8, 2015

I am working on a project which targets both 32 and 64 bit architectures at the moment. My system is amd64. I added i386 architecture using this guide. However, my problem is

Code: Select allapt-get install package-name:i386

prompts the removal of currently installed packages (amd64 arch.) which is the problem.

Code: Select allReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libportaudio0:i386

[Code] ...

Some of the packages I am talking about are

-libegl1-mesa-dev:i386
-libportaudio-dev:i386

Now, as of now, I want to carry out the compilation using 32 bit libraries, however, I really don't want to install 64bit version of all prerequisites each time I switch the compilation from 32 bit to 64. Is there any way to have both architectures at the same time?

Slackware :: No Way To Enter Extra Boot Options

Mar 11, 2011

I used btrfs, but my Slackware root is really a subvolume named system and not the root of btrfs. I do a similar setup of having the OS's root in it's own filesystem on FreeBSD+ZFS.Anyways, my problem lies in mkinitrd. There's no way to enter extra boot options, as I require subvol=system to be added to mount -o ro -t $ROOTFS $ROOTDEV /mnt.in the init script of /boot/initrd.gz. I don't reboot often and it's easy to manually remount /mnt with the correct options, however, is there another way of passing boot options to mkinitrd?

I see Patrick is the author of mkinitrd, so maybe this kind of option could, or maybe should, be added? I'm sure most people wouldn't make a subvolume for the OS's root, but I've been use to it with ZFS and prefer it for some reason.

Fedora :: 14 Base Install Is Installing Extra Package Groups?

Dec 1, 2010

When I'm running, I like to just do a base install to start, so that, I can go from there, only added things that I need. I just did a Base install of Fedora 14 x86_64, selecting only the "Base" package, and "vim-enhanced". But, when running a grouplist, it comes back with this...

Code:

[root@fcdesktop01 ~]# yum grouplist
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Adding en_US to language list
Setting up Group Process

[code]...

I don't see why these extra groups are included, when all I asked for was Base and vim?

Ubuntu Installation :: System-crash While Installing Textlive-fonts-extra

Jan 2, 2010

I was multitab browsing (around 15 tabs) in latest firefox for karmic koala (9.10) and at the same time downloading (probably already auto-installing) in synaptic-package-manager the package: textlive-fonts-extra (and other necessary packages; this was around 90 mb download and 250 mb installation)suddenly the pointer doesn't move anymore, (Alt+tab , and other combinations also didn't work anymore)
and I hold the power button untill the computer is turned off, when I reboot I get this message"invalid system disk, replace it and press any key to continue"now I'm using a livedisc to boot the computer (jaunty 9.04)To rebuild the system i think to manually install the packages that probably were interupted while installing and made it not work anymoreThe packages to be installed when text-live-fonts is marked for install (in synaptic opened from the livedisc) are:

dvipdfmx
lmodern
text-common
texlive-base
texlive-base-bin

[code]...

This may be different with 9.10 configuration (can anybody look to see which are necessary with 9.10) I think the computer wasn't responding anymore because I used too many tabs at ones. I had this same problem a few times before in the past weeks but then I wasn't installing something and the computer did restart and firefox restored all the tabs. I cannot enter /home/ from the livedisc (no permission) and it's necessary , I am in the middle of exams and i need to print the paper that is on the disc by monday Is there a way to enter it via command console?

OpenSUSE :: What Exactly Is The Extra Repository /repositories/KDE:/Extra

Jul 18, 2010

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

Slackware :: Static Libraries - Why Aren't They Shipped In Official Slackware Packages

Aug 12, 2010

I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?
