Ubuntu :: Prevent Mounting Of Internal HDD?

Jul 27, 2010

I have a machine with Windows XP installed on the HDD. I intend to install Ubuntu on a USB memory stick so that I can insert it into a USB slot and boot from that instead. What I would like to do though is to prevent it having access to the existing internal hard drive. It sounds as if it should be easy but I ca find a lot about mounting devices but not preventing auto-mounting.

Ubuntu :: Prevent IPod Auto Mounting

Jan 16, 2010

I currently run a Windows XP virtual machine (using VirtualBox) so that I can use iTunes. This is fine, and I have set up a USB device filter which allows me to use my iPod, and update it via iTunes on the VM. However, this only works sometimes. I think the reason is that the VM sometimes can't get access to the iPod because it's mounted in Ubuntu - I think it may just be a race for who can mount it first - Ubuntu or the VM, when I plug it in. Is there a way I can prevent the iPod from automounting in Ubuntu so this problem (hopefully) won't arise?

Ubuntu :: Long Disk-activity-pause On Boot - Between Mounting Root And Mounting Swap?

Jul 14, 2011

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:

[Code]...

Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? Networking :: Mounting Permissions Error / Mounting A Windows Host?

May 28, 2009

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:

Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.

I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

Ubuntu :: Prevent HDD Repair On Boot?

Aug 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu to use ddrescue to clone my dying drive and keep the log.Now the question is:Does Ubuntu really try to repair a corrupt NTFS disk during boot?If so, how can I change this behaviour, including any disks attached to the system in future?I had a similar question for the live cd, I think it should be easier now, as we can configure the system.Btw am I the only one to think an 'auto repair' by default is no good without asking for permission? It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.

Ubuntu :: Prevent Desktop Icons From Being Deleted?

Feb 5, 2010

I'm setting up an Ubuntu Computer Lab at my kids' school, and am trying to find a way to lock certain icons to the desktop. For example, I need each user to have Firefox on the desktop, and not be able to delete it. I've tried doing a chown on the Firefox shortcut and changing ownership to root, or to myself, but the student account can still just delete it with no problems. I've also tried using Sabayon, and while it does bring the shortcut back at each logon, it's not "Marked as Trusted" which is an annoying constant popup. How can I ensure that when logged on, each user will have a Firefox shortcut, along with a couple other mandatory ones? Some logon script maybe?
