I don't want games on my computer (running 9.10). Removed them successfully, but update manager keeps presenting them as suggested updates in update manager. Requires me to go through and uncheck all the games each time I do an update. Is there some way I can stop update manager from re-presenting removed programs or block future game updates?

I don't want my wireless network card to be automatically enabled in Network Manager when I start my computer. I keep setting it to disabled in Network Manager but when I reboot Network Manager has re-enabled it again.
Is there some way of starting with wireless disabled until I tell Network Manager to enable it?
I've recently downgraded kaffeine to 0.8.8 to get back the EPG which was working under hardy. Is there a simple way to prevent a package from updating when I update the rest of the system? I realise that this is not normally a good idea to keep packages back like this, but the upgrade to kaffeine caused the loss of a useful tool.

When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . I run the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel on Squeeze and the bad nvidia drivers. A recent update, and pardon for not noting which, broke 3d games on my box. From a terminal neverputt yields the following error:

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke! Someone else saw it, too, and reported it but his post remains alone in the thread as of 10 minutes ago.
After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
As the title says i updated my system which then needed a reboot. I also installed Mixxx djing software to try it out. So i thought id just restart the system. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.
